Little is known about the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) via food webs in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in subtropical forest ecosystems. In the present study, THg and MeHg were determined as well as the carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope composition in samples of soils, plants, invertebrates, and songbird feathers to construct food webs in a remote subtropical montane forest in Mt. Ailao, southwest China and assess the bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and trophic transfer of Hg. Results showed that the trophic levels (TLs) of

Ecological diversification through divergent selection is thought to be a major force during the process of adaptive radiations. However, the large sizes and complexity of most radiations such as those of the cichlids in the African Great Lakes make it impossible to infer the exact evolutionary history of any population divergence event. The genus Alcolapia, a small cichlid lineage endemic to Lakes Magadi and Natron in East Africa, exhibits phenotypes similar to some of those found in cichlids of the radiations of the African Great Lakes. The simplicity within Alcolapia makes it an excellent m

A sensitive and selective method was developed and validated to detect six volatile nitrosamines (N-nitrosodimethylamine, N-nitrosomethylethylamine, N-nitrosodiethylamine, N-nitrosopiperidine, N-nitrosopyrrolidine and N-nitrosomorpholine) in human urine. This method uses a liquid-liquid extraction cartridge followed by analysis with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) and quantification based on isotopic dilution. This is the first GC-MS-MS method reported for measuring volatile nitrosamines in human urine. This method reduces the sample volume required in other methods from

The relative contribution of regional contamination versus dietary differences to geographic variation in polar bear (Ursus maritimus) contaminant levels is unknown. Dietary variation between Alaska, Canada, East Greenland, and Svalbard subpopulations was assessed by muscle nitrogen and carbon stable isotope (δ(15)N, δ(13)C) and adipose fatty acid (FA) signatures relative to their main prey (ringed seals). Western and southern Hudson Bay signatures were characterized by depleted δ(15)N and δ(13)C, lower proportions of C(20) and C(22) monounsaturated FAs and higher proportions of C(18) and long

Orchids provide an ideal system for examining the evolution of heterotrophy because all species depend on fungal carbon during germination, whereas adult nutritional modes range from autotrophy to full mycoheterotrophy. The subtribe Calypsoinae illustrates this diversity through repeated shifts in fungal partners and nutritional strategies. Recent phylogenomic analyses place the Dactylostalix-Ephippianthus clade as sister to the Corallorhiza clade, which includes several heterotrophic lineages, raising questions about adult nutrition in Ephippianthus. Here, we combined fungal metabarcoding wit

Inborn errors of metabolism affecting the urea cycle are rare severe conditions caused by impaired nitrogen detoxification, leading to hyperammonemia and neurological morbidity across a broad clinical spectrum. Current biochemical diagnostics largely rely on quantification of metabolites. While indispensable for diagnosis and acute management, these snapshot readouts are highly dependent on external factors and often fail to reflect urea cycle function in metabolically compensated states, limiting their usefulness for disease stratification, therapeutic monitoring, and preclinical evaluation o

The impacts of microplastics (MPs) and biochar on root exudate-induced priming effect on native soil organic carbon mineralization (PE-NSOC) and on root exudate mineralization remain poorly understood. Here, 13C stable isotope labeling combined with biochar-specific biomarkers (benzene polycarboxylic acids, BPCAs) was used to partition CO2 emissions from NSOC, glucose (root exudate representative), and biochar. Polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) exerted limited effects on glucose-induced PE-NSOC, which remained negative, similar to glucose alone. Conversely, corn straw biochar (CSB) markedly reversed P

Gut microbial cross-feeding links the production, release, and reutilization of resources across community members, but its ecological consequences are shaped by competition, antagonism, host selection, and recipient identity. Despite rapid advances, major gaps remain between predicting metabolic complementarity, demonstrating causal donor-resource-recipient transfer, establishing ecological robustness, and achieving therapeutic benefit. Here, we organize current evidence within a Mechanism-Technology-Application framework. We summarize four representative and non-exclusive resource-transfer s

Organic phosphorus (Po) plays a pivotal role in watershed biogeochemical cycling and lake eutrophication, but its potential as an indicator of Anthropocene stratigraphic change remains insufficiently understood. This study integrates carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses with 31P NMR spectroscopy of representative plants, soils, and sediment profiles to elucidate the compositional characteristics, depositional history, and anthropogenic linkages of Po in an alpine meadow lake (Yamdrok Lake, YH) and a temperate forest oligotrophic lake (Sihailongwan Lake, LW), and further compares these systems

Amino acid metabolism is closely linked with kidney physiology and pathology. In acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, diabetic kidney disease, and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, disturbances in the branched-chain amino acids, tryptophan, glutamine, taurine, and sulfur amino acids pathways are consistently observed. Specific metabolites such as D-serine, kynurenine intermediates, and branched-chain keto acids are associated with disease progression. Taurine and indoxyl sulfate have also been proposed as therapeutic targets. At the nephron level, transporters and enzymes c

Epidemiological studies show a strong correlation between air pollution and fetal growth restriction (FGR), but existing results are controversial due to inherent limitations, such as causality of specific pollutants, developmental origin, and maternal-fetal transmission. To address this controversy, we first conducted a retrospective analysis of 28,796 newborns and revealed that maternal nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure during the second trimester was positively associated with FGR, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.075 (95% confidence interval: 1.020-1.133) per 10 μg/m3 NO2 increase for small

A novel 'anammox' in the absence of anammox bacteria was confirmed to occur in an anaerobic sludge slurry system, in which Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle driven by NO2--induced Fe(II) oxidation and subsequent NH4+-induced Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) pushed the nitrogen removal. Results showed that Fe(II) contents significantly (p<0.05) decreased and Fe(III) accordingly increased with NO2- addition, indicating that Fe(II) was anaerobically oxidized to Fe(III). With depletion of NO2-, the Fe(II) content began to increase which was a result of Feammox. Consequently, 96.0% NH4+-N of the NO2--added reactor w

A dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) microbial community was developed under a high organic carbon to nitrate (C/NO3-) ratio in an anoxic semi-continuous sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with glucose as the source of carbon and NO3- as the electron acceptor. Activated sludge collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant with good denitrification efficiency was used as the inoculum to start the system. The aim of this study was to examine the microbial populations in a high C/NO3- ecosystem for potential DNRA microorganisms, which are the microbial group with the abili

We sampled landlocked Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from four lakes (Small, 9-Mile, North, Amituk) in the Canadian High Arctic that span a gradient of mercury contamination. Metals (Hg, Se, Tl, and Fe) were measured in char tissues to determine their relationships with health indices (relative condition factor and hepatosomatic index), stable nitrogen isotope ratios, and liver histology. A subcellular partitioning procedure was employed to determine how metals were distributed between potentially sensitive and detoxified compartments of Arctic char livers from a low- and high-mercury lake (

The ThinPrep cervical smear is widely used in clinical practice for the cytological and molecular screening against abnormal cells and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Current advancements made to LC-MS proteomics include the use of stable isotope labeling for the in-depth analysis of proteins in complex clinical specimens. Such approaches have yet to be realized for ThinPrep clinical specimens. In this study, an LC-MS method based on isobaric (iTRAQ) labeling and high-resolution FT-Orbitrap mass spectrometry was used for the proteomic analysis of 23 human ThinPrep smear specimens. Tandem

Concentrations of total mercury, selenium and a suite of organochlorine compounds were measured in eggs of thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia), northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) and black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) collected on Prince Leopold Island in Lancaster Sound, Nunavut, Canada, between 1975 and 1998. Mercury levels in thick-billed murre and northern fulmar eggs increased significantly during this period while selenium concentrations decreased significantly in northern fulmar eggs. Mercury and selenium concentrations in black-legged kittiwake eggs exhibited no significant te

Vitamin D is essential for healthy skeletal growth and is increasingly recognised for its role in chronic disease development, inflammation and immunity. 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) concentrations are an indicator of vitamin D status and are normally analysed in plasma or serum samples in clinical settings, while archaeological studies rely on the identification of skeletal markers of vitamin D deficiency, such as rickets. Here, we determined 25(OH)D3 concentrations in hair specimens ('locks') that had been sampled close to the root, aligned by cut end, and sliced into sequential segments

The human synuclein protein family includes alpha-synuclein, which has been linked to both familial and sporadic Parkinson's disease, and the highly homologous beta and gamma-synuclein. Mutations in alpha-synuclein cause autosomal dominant early onset Parkinson's, and the protein is found deposited in a fibrillar form in hereditary and idiopathic forms of the disease. No genetic link between beta and gamma-synuclein, and any neurodegenerative disease has been established, and it is generally considered that these proteins are not highly pathogenic. In addition, beta and gamma-synuclein are rep
