Orthodontic tooth movement through the maxillary sinus in an adult with multiple missing teeth.

This case report describes the successful orthodontic tooth movement through the maxillary sinus in an adult patient. A 41-year-old Asian woman had severe lip protrusion and multiple missing posterior teeth. Her orthodontic treatment included the extraction of 2 teeth, maximum retraction of the incisors using the extraction spaces and the existing spaces from the missing molars, and closure of all remaining spaces. Even though the treatment time was extended because of the anatomic and biologic challenges associated with moving posterior teeth over a long distance through the maxillary sinus,

Bone stress and strain after use of a miniplate for molar protraction and uprighting: a 3-dimensional finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to use the finite element method to evaluate the distribution of stresses and strains on the local bone tissue adjacent to the miniplate used for anchorage of orthodontic forces. METHODS: A 3-dimensional model composed of a hemimandible and teeth was constructed using dental computed tomographic images, in which we assembled a miniplate with fixation screws. The uprighting and mesial movements of the mandibular second molar that was anchored with the miniplate were simulated. The miniplate was loaded with horizontal forces of 2, 5, and 15 N. A moment of

Camouflage treatment of severe bialveolar protrusion in skeletal Class II using miniscrew anchorage.

The aim of this case report was to demonstrate the efficient use of miniscrew as anchorage in a 12-year-old male patient with skeletal and dental Class II and severe biprotrusion and lips procumbency. It was proposed a compensating orthodontic treatment with 4 premolar extraction and maximum anchorage. Since the patient abandoned treatment after one premolar extraction, loss of anchorage occurred and treatment plan was modified to maximize lower retraction with miniscrew anchorage and distalization of the upper arch using two methods: Class II elastics from lower miniscrews to the sliding jig

A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of a horizontally impacted mandibular second premolar: 10-year follow-up.

This report presents a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of a rare case of a distally impacted mandibular second premolar indicating a 90-degree tilt of the long axis in a healthy, 15-year-old girl. It also describes the clinical and radiologic findings after a 10-year longitudinal follow-up period. The horizontally impacted mandibular second premolar was positioned behind the roots of the first molar and in close proximity to the root of the second molar, toward the lingual cortex of the mandibular body. Treatment methods required 2 years of cooperation among an orthodontist, an ora

Treatment of lateral open bite with vertical dentoalveolar distraction osteogenesis.

The aim of this article is to describe the surgical, orthodontic, and periodontal treatment of an adult patient with a lateral open bite, anterior crowding, and gingival recession on the mandibular right lateral incisor. The lateral open bite, which resisted conventional mechanics, was successfully corrected by the combination of dento-osseous osteotomies and vertical alveolar distraction using orthodontic multibracket appliances in conjunction with nickel-titanium archwires and intermaxillary elastics. After the orthodontic treatment, the denuded root surface of the mandibular right lateral i

Enhanced Sutural Protraction: An Innovative Orthopedic Protocol for Midfacial Advancement in Growing Patients.

Midfacial hypoplasia is a common condition in clinical practice. It is characteristic of various craniofacial syndromes but can also occur as an isolated form of dento-skeletal dysmorphosis. Managing this condition in growing patients is challenging. Surgical approaches have high relapse rates, whereas orthodontic treatments yield variable results in midface advancement and stability. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Meazzini-Mazzoleni Enhanced Sutural Protraction (MMESP) protocol for correcting severe midfacial hypoplasia in growing patients. Ten patients, with or without associa

Palatal bone thickness in adult patients with different facial patterns: A retrospective cross-sectional CBCT study for orthodontic miniscrew planning.

INTRODUCTION: Effective orthodontic anchorage control plays a crucial role in achieving successful treatment outcomes, particularly in cases involving significant tooth movements. Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) placed in the midpalatal region have become widely used due to their ability to provide absolute skeletal anchorage without depending on patient compliance. However, anatomical variables such as palatal bone thickness and possible variations according to facial pattern are essential considerations during treatment planning. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare palatal bone thickness

Mini-implants as provisional anchorage for the replacement of missing anterior teeth: a clinical report.

This clinical report describes an adult patient referred for orthodontic treatment with mini-implants as anchorage to correct the root angulation of maxillary lateral incisors. The purpose of this report was to demonstrate the versatility of mini-implants placed in a vertical direction in esthetic areas. During orthodontic treatment, some aspects must be observed to preserve the interim restoration against the occlusal loads to avoid screw fracture. A fixed appliance was placed to correct the position of the maxillary anterior teeth and to complete the treatment. Acceptable esthetics and funct
