Lingual orthodontics as an aesthetic resource in the preparation of orthodontic/surgical treatment.

The lingual technique was introduced in the late '70s and, just like orthodontics, it has developed significantly in the past few years. Adult and young adult have been attracted to such alternative aesthetic treatment. Despite their need of orthodontic treatment, they want to have an aesthetic alternative, as "invisible" as possible--something that can be achieved with the lingual technique. Nevertheless, many treatment or re-treatment cases also demand correction through orthognathic surgery, a process which is nowadays much simpler and considered an effective auxiliary method for the malocc

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 5. Volumetric analysis of root resorption craters after application of light and heavy orthodontic forces.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies on root resorption, resorption was quantified by making histologic cuts or by surface area measurements of resorption craters. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of orthodontic force magnitude on root resorption craters with volumetric measurements and also to identify the sites that might be predisposed to resorption. METHODS: After an experimental time of 28 days, 36 human premolars previously divided into light-force (25 g) and heavy-force (225 g) groups were extracted and prepared for scanning electron microscope imaging. Pairs of stereo im

Toxicity of Metal Ions Released from a Fixed Orthodontic Appliance to Gastrointestinal Tract Cell Lines.

The mechanism of toxicity and cellular response to metal ions present in the environment is still a very current area of research. In this work, which is a continuation of the study of the toxicity of metal ions released by fixed orthodontic appliances, eluates of archwires, brackets, ligatures, and bands are used to test the prooxidant effect, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity on cell lines of the gastrointestinal tract. Eluates obtained after three immersion periods (3, 7, and 14 days) and with known amounts and types of metal ions were used. Four cell lines-CAL 27 (human tongue), Hep-G2 (liver

Symmetric and asymmetric expansion of molars using a Burstone-type transpalatal arch. Biomechanical and clinical analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A transpalatal arch (TPA) directly connecting the maxillary first molars can be used in passive (for stabilization) and active (for molar or segment movement) modes. Activation may be symmetric or asymmetric. This study was performed to analyze the effectiveness of TPAs for transverse expansion treatment by measuring both the force systems they deliver and the clinical tooth movements thus achieved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients (six with symmetric and four with asymmetric transverse discrepancies) were treated using a TPA made of titanium-molybdenum alloy (TMA) and fitted w

Tooth Autotransplantation, Autogenous Dentin Graft, and Growth Factors Application: A Method for Preserving the Alveolar Ridge in Cases of Severe Infraocclusion-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background: Tooth infraocclusion is a process in which a completely or partially erupted tooth gradually moves away from the occlusal plane. Submerged teeth can lead to serious complications. Treating teeth with infraocclusion is very challenging. One of the procedures allowing for the replacement of a missing tooth is autotransplantation. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on teeth autotransplantation, supported by a case report involving the autotransplantation of a third mandibular molar into the site of an extracted infraoccluded first mandibular molar, as well as the utiliz
