Before "Back to Sleep": Deformational plagiocephaly and pediatric insights from Iron Age Italy.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether deformational plagiocephaly, a common pediatric cranial condition, often linked to limited infant head mobility, occurred in an ancient population and its implications for infant care practices. MATERIALS: Twenty-six Early Iron Age adult crania from Matelica, Italy (mid-9th-8th c. BCE). METHODS: All crania underwent macroscopic assessment. Computed tomography was performed on those with posterior cranial asymmetry (n = 11) to support differential diagnosis. Severity was classified using the oblique cranial length ratio from standardized vertex images. RESULTS:

Investigating the relationship between periods of vitamin D deficiency and sequential dentine carbon and nitrogen values: A case study from the post-medieval Low Countries.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the presence of interglobular dentine (IGD), reflecting periods of suboptimal vitamin D levels, affects serial carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values in incremental dentine profiles. MATERIAL: Nine individuals, represented by eight 1st molars and one canine from Hattem, Beemster (Netherlands), and Koekelberg (Belgium) cemeteries (17th-19th cent. CE). Eight teeth had IGD previously identified via microscopy, and one displayed no IGD. METHODS: The two common sequential dentine methodologies, micro-slicing and micro-punching, were applied to measure

Investigating the association between intestinal parasite infection and cribra orbitalia in the medieval population of Cambridge, UK.

OBJECTIVE: Cribra orbitalia is believed to be a skeletal indicator of chronic anaemia, scurvy, rickets or related metabolic diseases. It has been suggested that it may be used as a proxy indicator for intestinal parasite infection, as parasites often cause anaemia today. Our aim is to investigate this association in the medieval population of Cambridge, UK. MATERIALS: Individuals excavated from the cemeteries of the Augustinian friary and All Saints by the Castle parish church, and aged from 7 to adulthood. METHODS: We undertook parasite analysis of the pelvic sediment and control samples of

Investigating the "scapula sign" as an indicator of rickets.

OBJECTIVE: In 1971, Weiss identified a "scapula sign" comprising a defect at the inferior angle of the scapula in juveniles with vitamin D deficiency rickets, but this has been little studied since. This study aimed to explore pathological variation of this defect in juveniles with other skeletal manifestations of vitamin D deficiency rickets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 527 juveniles, aged from birth to 12 years, from two post-medieval British assemblages were macroscopically evaluated to document the range of pathological changes at the inferior angle. Scapula maximum lengths were recorded and s
