Immediate medical care after sexual assault.

Immediate needs after sexual assault include safety and privacy in the first instance, followed by treatment of injuries and prevention of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus. Management should include risk identification of self-harm and suicide, as well as safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. Pregnancy prevention can be achieved through oral or mechanical methods of emergency contraception. Availability of emergency contraception may vary between districts and countries, depending on local laws and cultural or religious belie

Stability and change in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among adults with and without Down syndrome.

Changes in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among 150 adults with Down syndrome and 240 adults with mental retardation due to other causes were examined with seven assessments over a 9-year period. Adults were primarily younger than 40, the age at which declines begin to be evident in individuals with Down syndrome. Adults with Down syndrome were advantaged in their functional abilities and lack of behavior problems, comparable in health, and exhibited comparable rates of change on these measures as adults with mental retardation due to other causes. Association between parental psychiatric conditions and offspring psychiatric, behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes: A Swedish population-based children-of-monozygotic twins study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems tend to run in families, with studies showing transdiagnostic associations across generations. Nevertheless, if these associations were attributable to unmeasured familial (either environmental or genetic) factors that influence both generations, then treating the parental conditions would not break the intergenerational transmission. This study aims to investigate the associations between parental psychiatric conditions and offspring psychiatric, behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes, after controlling for unmeasured familial factors shared by offspring of m

Conservatively treated Congenital Hyperinsulinism (CHI) due to K-ATP channel gene mutations: reducing severity over time.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Congenital Hyperinsulinism (CHI) due to mutations in K-ATP channel genes (K-ATP CHI) are increasingly treated by conservative medical therapy without pancreatic surgery. However, the natural history of medically treated K-ATP CHI has not been described; it is unclear if the severity of recessively and dominantly inherited K-ATP CHI reduces over time. We aimed to review variation in severity and outcomes in patients with K-ATP CHI treated by medical therapy. METHODS: Twenty-one consecutively presenting patients with K-ATP CHI with dominantly and recessively inherited

Genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of ADGRV1 mutations in four children and functional validation in a zebrafish model.

Mutations in ADGRV1 can cause seizures, but the mechanism remains unclear. The zebrafish model can be used to assess the functions of human ADGRV1 and its variant alleles during embryonic development. In this study, we summarized the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of four children with ADGRV1 variation and based on this, we validated the ADGRV1 loss phenotype in an adgrv1-knockout zebrafish model. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and genotypic characteristics of four pediatric patients diagnosed as having ADGRV1 mutations at Children's Hospital Affiliated to Chongqing Medical

Examining Sex Differences in Autism Heritability.

IMPORTANCE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder more prevalent in males than in females. The cause of ASD is largely genetic, but the association of genetics with the skewed sex ratio is not yet understood. To our knowledge, no large population-based study has provided estimates of heritability by sex. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the sex-specific heritability of ASD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a population-based, retrospective analysis using national health registers of nontwin siblings and cousins from Sweden born between January 1, 1985, and December

The function of anal fin egg-spots in the cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni.

Color and pigmentation patterns of animals are often targets of sexual selection because of their role in communication. Although conspicuous male traits are typically implicated with intersexual selection, there are examples where sex-specific displays play a role in an intrasexual context, e.g. when they serve as signals for aggression level and/or status. Here, we focus on the function of a conspicuous male ornament in the most species-rich tribe of cichlid fishes, the haplochromines. A characteristic feature of these ca. 1500 species are so-called egg-spots in form of ovoid markings on the

Epilepsy in Angelman syndrome: A scoping review.

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is characterized by severe developmental delays including marked speech impairment, movement abnormalities(ataxia, tremor), and unique behaviors such as frequent laughter and is caused by dysfunctional maternal UBE3A gene (maternal 15q11-13 deletions, maternal specific UBE3A mutation, uniparental disomy, and imprinting defect). Intractable epileptic seizures since early childhood with characteristic EEG abnormalities are present in 80-90% patients with AS. Underlying pathophysiology may involve neocortical and thalamocortical hyperexcitability secondary to severe reducti

Exposure to childhood abuse is associated with human sperm DNA methylation.

Offspring of persons exposed to childhood abuse are at higher risk of neurodevelopmental and physical health disparities across the life course. Animal experiments have indicated that paternal environmental stressors can affect sperm DNA methylation and gene expression in an offspring. Childhood abuse has been associated with epigenetic marks in human blood, saliva, and brain tissue, with statistically significant methylation differences ranging widely. However, no studies have examined the association of childhood abuse with DNA methylation in gametes. We examined the association of childhood

Klinefelter syndrome and other sex chromosomal aneuploidies.

The term Klinefelter syndrome (KS) describes a group of chromosomal disorder in which there is at least one extra X chromosome to a normal male karyotype, 46,XY. XXY aneuploidy is the most common disorder of sex chromosomes in humans, with prevalence of one in 500 males. Other sex chromosomal aneuploidies have also been described, although they are much less frequent, with 48,XXYY and 48,XXXY being present in 1 per 17,000 to 1 per 50,000 male births. The incidence of 49,XXXXY is 1 per 85,000 to 100,000 male births. In addition, 46,XX males also exist and it is caused by translocation of Y mate

Molecular breakpoint cloning and gene expression studies of a novel translocation t(4;15)(q27;q11.2) associated with Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (MIM #176270; PWS) is caused by lack of the paternally-derived copies, or their expression, of multiple genes in a 4 Mb region on chromosome 15q11.2. Known mechanisms include large deletions, maternal uniparental disomy or mutations involving the imprinting center. De novo balanced reciprocal translocations in 5 reported individuals had breakpoints clustering in SNRPN intron 2 or exon 20/intron 20. To further dissect the PWS phenotype and define the minimal critical region for PWS features, we have studied a 22 year old male with a milder PWS phenotype and a d
