"Familial hyperpepsinogenemia" and Helicobacter pylori infection.

OBJECTIVE: Pepsinogen 1 (PG1) is a proenzyme precursor to pepsin, a protease secreted by the gastric chief cell. PG1 levels correlate with maximal gastric acid output. In 1979, Rotter et al. reported two pedigrees in which elevated PG1 levels and duodenal ulcers were prevalent. They proposed autosomal dominant inheritance of elevated PG1 and suggested that it was a risk factor for duodenal ulcer disease. In 1982, Helicobacter pylori (Hp) was discovered and was shown to be an important factor in peptic ulcer disease. Hp infection is also associated with increased PGI levels. We tested serum fro

Dose-dependent promoting effects of catechol on glandular stomach carcinogenesis in BALB/c mice initiated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea.

The effects of catechol administration in the diet on stomach carcinogenesis in mice after initiation with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) in the drinking water were investigated in a development trial for a new experimental protocol. Male 6-week-old BALB/c mice were given MNU in the drinking water intermittently for a total of three one-week periods, with one-week intervals, at the concentration of 120 ppm (groups 1 and 2). Groups 3 and 4 served as non initiated controls. From week 7, groups 1 and 3 were divided into three subgroups and the mice were fed on diet containing 0.05% (groups 1a and 3

Gastric cancer, gastritis and plasma vitamin C: results from an international correlation and cross-sectional study. The Eurogast Study Group.

Low intake of foods rich in vitamin C is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer, and geographic variation in average vitamin C intake, therefore, could explain some of the wide international variation in gastric cancer rates. This multicentre study investigated the relationships between plasma levels of vitamin C, as an indicator of vitamin C intake, and gastric cancer rates, markers of gastritis and other socio-demographic variables. Fasting plasma samples from about 1,400 individuals from 9 centres in 7 countries worldwide were assayed for total vitamin C using a fluorometric as

Safety and efficacy of traditional herbal medicine Yukgunja-tang for atrophic gastritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Atrophic gastritis is a precancerous disease with limited treatment options. Yukgunja-tang (YT) has been widely used as an alternative medicine for gastric-related diseases; however, there is insufficient evidence of its efficacy in the treatment of atrophic gastritis. AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the efficacy and safety of YT alone and in combination with Western medicine (WM) for the treatment of atrophic gastritis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0 was emplo

Electrochemical immunosensor for the predictive cancer biomarker SLFN11 using reduced graphene oxide/MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 composite.

SLFN11 is a predictive cancer biomarker essential for identifying tumors that are sensitive to DNA-damaging agents, facilitating more personalized and effective treatment approaches. Detecting this biomarker can guide therapeutic decisions and improve outcomes for cancer patients. However, existing detection methods for SLFN11 are complex and require advanced techniques. In this study, we introduce the first immunosensor designed for on-site detection of SLFN11. An advanced electrochemical immunosensor platform utilizing a composite of graphene oxide (GO) and chromium-based metal organic frame

[Type A, Type B, and Non-atrophic Gastritis].

The gastric cancer risk varies based on the etiology and severity of gastritis, which depends on a history of Helicobacter pylori infection and the secretory capacity of the stomach. Type A gastritis is associated with reverse atrophy of the corpus and type B with progressive atrophy extending from the antrum to the corpus. Diffuse or spotty redness in the corpus together with high serum pepsinogen (PG) II levels and a low PG I/II ratio are observed in patients with H. pylori infection when secretory capacity of the stomach is intact. Diffuse-type gastric cancer may develop near the gastric fo

Standard vs magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric precancerous conditions.

BACKGROUND: Advances in endoscopic imaging enable the identification of patients at high risk of gastric cancer. However, there are no comparative data on the utility of standard and magnifying narrow-band imaging (M-NBI) endoscopy for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, gastric atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia. AIM: To compare the diagnostic performance of standard and M-NBI endoscopy for H. pylori gastritis and precancerous conditions. METHODS: In 254 patients, standard endoscopy findings were classified into mosaic-like appearance (type A), diffuse homogenous redness (

Pre-existing Helicobacter pylori serum IgG enhances the vibriocidal antibody response to CVD 103-HgR live oral cholera vaccine in Malian adults.

Accumulating evidence indicates that persistent Helicobacter pylori gastric infection influences immune responses to oral enteric vaccines. We studied the association between pre-existing H. pylori serum IgG and serum pepsinogens levels (PGs) as markers of gastric inflammation and the immune response to single-dose live oral cholera vaccine CVD 103-HgR in Malian adults. Baseline sera obtained during a phase 2 safety/immunogenicity clinical trial of cholera vaccine CVD 103-HgR among 93 healthy Malian adults were tested for H. pylori IgG antibodies and PGI and PGII levels using enzyme linked imm

Long-term gastric cancer risk in male smokers with atrophic corpus gastritis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term gastric cancer risk in male smokers with and without atrophic gastritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 22,346 elderly male smokers participated in the Helsinki Gastritis Study between the years 1989 and 1993. Serum pepsinogen I (PGI) was measured for the men, and 2,132 men with low PGI (<25 µg/L; a marker of atrophic corpus gastritis) were invited to undergo gastroscopy because of increased gastric cancer risk. Endoscopy was performed to 1,327 men, who were followed up for a median of 13.6 years and a maximum of 25.3 years therea

Sex differences in the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection: an individual participant data pooled analysis (StoP Project).

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is more frequent among men, though the magnitude of the association might be inaccurate due to potential misclassification of lifetime infection and publication bias. Moreover, infection is common, and most studies are cross-sectional. Thus, prevalence ratios (PRs) may be easier to interpret than odds ratios (ORs). AIM: The aim of this study was to quantify the association between sex and H. pylori infection using controls from 14 studies from the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Project. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: H. pylori infection was def

Histological Features of Gastric Mucosa Serologically Diagnosed as Gastric Atrophy without Helicobacter pylori Infection.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although gastric atrophy is primarily caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, it is unclear why patients serologically diagnosed with gastric atrophy without H. pylori infection exhibit greater atrophy. We investigated histopathological features in serologically diagnosed gastric atrophy without H. pylori infection. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with positive serum pepsinogen and negative serum H. pylori antibody tests underwent gastric biopsy and histological evaluation. The presence of enterochromaffin-like cells (ECL) was also evaluated. Gastric cancer risks for each hist

Infection of Helicobacter pylori and Atrophic Gastritis Influence Lactobacillus in Gut Microbiota in a Japanese Population.

BACKGROUND: Suppression of gastric acid by proton pump inhibitors is associated with the increase of Lactobacillus in human gut microbiota. Gastric acid secretion is also suppressed by Helicobacter pylori infection and following atrophic gastritis. However, few studies have examined the association between H. pylori infection and Lactobacillus species in gut microbiota particularly in Japan. METHODS: A total of 1,123 adult subjects who participated in a health survey in Hirosaki City were studied. Infection of H. pylori was defined by both serum antibody and stool antigen test. The presence a

Incidence and risk factors for the development of chronic atrophic gastritis: five year follow-up of a population-based cohort study.

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a well-established precursor of intestinal gastric cancer. However, data on incidence of CAG are rare, especially from population-based studies. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the incidence of CAG in a large population-based study among older adults from Germany and to identify major risk factors associated with its development. In the baseline and 5-year follow-up examinations of the ESTHER study, serological measurements of pepsinogen (PG) I and II and Helicobacter pylori antibodies were performed in 5,229 women and men, aged 50-74 years at basel

Pernicious anemia: new insights from a gastroenterological point of view.

Pernicious anemia (PA) is a macrocytic anemia that is caused by vitamin B(12) deficiency, as a result of intrinsic factor deficiency. PA is associated with atrophic body gastritis (ABG), whose diagnosis is based on histological confirmation of gastric body atrophy. Serological markers that suggest oxyntic mucosa damage are increased fasting gastrin and decreased pepsinogen I. Without performing Schilling's test, intrinsic factor deficiency may not be proven, and intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies are useful surrogate markers of PA, with 73% sensitivity and 100% specificity. PA is ma

Histochemical and immunohistochemical characterization of exocrine cells in the foregut of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta (Emydidae).

The morphofunctional organization of the exocrine cells in the foregut of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta, was investigated by histochemistry (PAS, AB pH1.0 and pH 2.5, HID-AB, Bowie), lectin-histochemistry (WGA, SBA, UEA, ConA, PNA, DBA, sialidase-SBA, sialidase-PNA, Paradoxical ConA), and immunohistochemistry (antipepsin, anti-alpha-H+,K+ ATPase) to detect regional differences and verify the existence of an oro-aboral gradient in gastric juice secretion. Observations showed that pharyngeal goblet cells have mucins with terminal residuals of GalNAc and sialic acid. In the oesop

Rugal hyperplastic gastritis increases the risk of gastric carcinoma, especially diffuse and p53-independent subtypes.

OBJECTIVES: Infection with Helicobacter pylori has been linked to chronic gastritis with atrophy or hyperrugosity. The development of noncardia gastric carcinoma, especially the intestinal type in Lauren's classification, has been associated with severe atrophic gastritis and p53 mutations. The objective of this study was to determine the association between hyperrugosity and gastric carcinogenesis, including p53 mutations. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Barium meal roentgenograms were performed in 395 control participants and 132 gastric carcinoma patients. The fold width was measured at the grea

Differential expression of genes related to levels of mucosal cell proliferation among multiple rat strains by using oligonucleotide microarrays.

Induction levels of cell proliferation, in response to gastric mucosal damage by N-methyl- N'-nitro- N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), are different among rat strains and correlate with susceptibility to MNNG-induced gastric carcinogenesis. Here, we used oligonucleotide microarrays to search for genes that show expression levels accordant with the extents of cell proliferation among six rat strains. Expression levels of 8,800 probe sets were analyzed in the pylorus of ACI, LEW, WKY (strains with strong cell proliferation), F344, (ACI x BUF)F1, and BUF rats (strains with weak cell proliferation) after
