Decreased cell wall digestibility in canola transformed with chimeric tyrosine decarboxylase genes from opium poppy.

Tyrosine decarboxylase (TYDC) is a common plant enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of numerous secondary metabolites, including hydroxycinnamic acid amides. Although a definite function has not yet been determined, amides have been proposed to form a physical barrier against pathogens because they are usually found as integral cell wall components. Canola (Brassica napus) was independently transformed with chimeric genes (35S::TYDC1 and 35S::TYDC2) under the transcriptional control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, and encoding two TYDC isoforms from opium poppy (Papaver somniferu

Peach allergy pattern: experience in 70 patients.

We report the clinical characteristics of peach allergy encountered in a population of peach-allergic patients. We evaluated 165 patients. The 70 peach-allergic patients were diagnosed through clinical history, the skin prick-prick test, and open oral challenge and rub tests to peach. As a pollinic control group, 95 pollen-allergic patients were also evaluated. Some 49% of the patients were male and 51% female. The mean age was 20 +/- 8 years. Oral allergy syndrome (86%) was the most common symptom, followed by contact urticaria (61%) and systemic symptoms (26%). Some 67% of the patients were

Probiotic Characterization of Honey Bee-Associated Lactic Acid Bacteria and Their Impact on Colony Growth.

Honey bee-associated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) represent promising probiotic candidates due to their ecological adaptation to sugar-rich niches and the potential to enhance host resilience. This study aimed to evaluate their probiotic attributes of LAB strains isolated and characterized from honey bee environment both in vitro and in vivo. Four isolates namely Apilactobacillus apinorum ACIP 01, A. kunkeei ACIH 04, Fructobacillus fructosus ACIG 04, and Secundilactobacillus kimchicus ACIG 01 were assessed for functional properties. Biofilm assays revealed strain and sugar-dependent adherence, w

In-field pollen consumption by orchard predatory mites detected by metabarcoded molecular gut content analysis.

DNA metabarcoding has become a relatively common tool for studying consumption of plants by arthropod herbivores and identifying pollen collected by pollinating insects. However, studies using molecular gut content analysis to detect pollen-feeding in generalist predators are exceedingly rare. Pollen-feeding is known to be important to the nutritional ecology of many generalist predators and is particularly well studied in phytoseiid mites. In apples, generalist phytoseiids such as Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and the stigmaeid predator, Zetzellia mali (Ewing)

Tropilaelaps mercedesae: an emerging global threat to apiculture - a comprehensive review.

Honey bees (Apis spp.) are key pollinators in agricultural and natural ecosystems; however, their populations are declining due to multiple interacting stressors and their synergistic effects, including parasitic mites. While Varroa destructor is widely recognized as the primary global driver of colony losses, mites of the genus Tropilaelaps, particularly Tropilaelaps mercedesae, are emerging as a serious and still underestimated threat. Native to Asia and naturally associated with wild hosts such as Apis dorsata, T. mercedesae has successfully transitioned to managed Apis mellifera colonies a

Acoustic-Based Queen Bee Status Recognition: A Transfer Learning Approach Refinement.

Honeybees are indispensable pollinators for agricultural ecosystems, and a colony's stability and reproductive capacity depend critically on the presence of a healthy queen. Acoustic monitoring has emerged as a promising non-invasive, lighting-independent approach for long-term colony observation. However, existing studies have largely been confined to single-apiary datasets or merged datasets from multiple similar apiaries for model training. Moreover, model evaluation has relied primarily on overall performance metrics, with insufficient attention to cross-region generalization and the detec

Developmental exposure to amitraz impairs reproductive development and metabolic homeostasis in honey bee (Apis mellifera) queens.

Chemicals used within managed pollinator systems can become developmental stressors for non-target organisms, yet their effects on reproductively specialized individuals remain insufficiently understood. Here, we examined the developmental ecotoxicity of the in-hive acaricide amitraz in honey bee (Apis mellifera) queens by exposing fourth-instar larvae to amitraz in acute-toxicity and sublethal-exposure assays and assessing responses from organismal to metabolic levels. The 72-h LD50 of amitraz was 4.428 μg/queen. Residue-informed sub-LD50 exposure (0.01-1 μg/queen) impaired queen development,

Underground allies: Mycorrhizal flexibility facilitates orchid occurrence in post-mining landscapes.

Orchids are generally regarded as ecological specialists because their dependence on obligate mycorrhizal symbioses and pollinators is thought to constrain them to relatively undisturbed habitats. However, the occurrence of some species in highly degraded environments challenges this assumption. Epipactis helleborine, a widespread Eurasian orchid, successfully colonizes heavy metal contaminated mining sites in Italy, where most vegetation fails to establish. We investigated whether the occurrence of E. helleborine in these extreme habitats is facilitated by shifts in fungal associations and ex

Chemical ecology and convergent evolution of natural hallucinogens: From ecological defense to conserved neural targets.

Natural hallucinogenic compounds have arisen independently across plants, fungi, and animals, evolving into a diverse chemical arsenal that includes phenethylamines, indolealkylamines, and terpenoid scaffolds. Beyond clinical and cultural frameworks, their ecological origins and evolutionary trajectories may help explain why such potent modulators of perception, emotion, and cognition persist in nature. Here, integrating chemical ecology, comparative genomics, biosynthetic logic, and evolutionary biology, we propose that these molecules may function as defensive agents or symbiosis-associated

Efficient In Planta Induction of Transgenic Hairy Roots in Macadamia Seedlings and Mature Trees Using Visual Reporters.

Macadamia (Macadamia spp.) is an economically important nut crop whose severe recalcitrance to genetic transformation substantially hinders progress in functional genomics and molecular breeding. To overcome this critical technical bottleneck, this study established a highly efficient and broadly applicable in planta hairy root genetic transformation system with integrated visual screening. This system utilizes an Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation method, employing multiple visual reporter gene systems (DsRed2, eGFP, RUBY, and AtPAP2) to achieve antibiotic-independent and non-de

Evolution of morphological traits of Dendrobium sensu lato (Orchidaceae)-an attempt to resolve phylogenetic relationships in nominal and morphologically convergent sections.

BACKGROUND: Dendrobium is a large genus within the Orchidaceae family, containing over 1,600 species. Most are sympodial epiphytes. These species are distributed throughout southern, eastern, and southeastern Asia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand. Infrageneric classification of this group is challenging, largely because of the large number of taxa, the wide geographic range, and the considerable morphological diversity. The primary objective of our research was to analyze the genus Dendrobium (focusing primarily on the nominal section) using DNA sequences and to int

Temporal trends in pesticide pressure differ among non-target species groups but show spatially consistent patterns across France.

The negative impacts of pesticides on biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and human health are broadly documented and numerous policies have been proposed to reduce their use and associated risks. A key challenge is to provide relevant metrics of pesticide use that account for toxicity variation between pesticides to inform public policy. Here, we estimated temporal and spatial trends in pesticide pressure in France between 2008 and 2022 using the total applied toxicity (TAT) measure. The TAT integrates pesticide masses and toxicity data from official environmental risk assessments toward dif

Developmental processes in flower differentiation of dioecious plants: insights from yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis).

The dioecious species Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) holds significant economic and cultural value, yet key aspects of its reproductive development remain unresolved. This study combines histological, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and cytogenetic analyses to elucidate floral ontogeny, microsporogenesis, and sexual differentiation in yerba mate. For both sexes, six arbitrary descriptive stages of floral development were established based on all available data. Our findings reveal that floral development follows a type I pattern, initiating as bisexual before diverging into unisexual flo

Quantifying farm sustainability through the lens of ecological theory.

The achievements of the Green Revolution in meeting the nutritional needs of a growing global population have been won at the expense of unintended consequences for the environment. Some of these negative impacts are now threatening the sustainability of food production through the loss of pollinators and natural enemies of crop pests, the evolution of pesticide resistance, declining soil health and vulnerability to climate change. In the search for farming systems that are sustainable both agronomically and environmentally, alternative approaches have been proposed variously called 'agroecolo

Unravelling impacts of the insecticide deltamethrin on neuronal sodium channels in honey bees: Molecular insights and behavioural outcomes.

The current risk assessment framework for insecticides suffers from certain shortcomings in adequately addressing the effects of low doses on off-target species. To remedy this gap, a combination of behavioural assays and in vitro cellular approaches are required to refine the precision of toxicity assessment. The domestic honey bee has long been standing as an emblematic pollinator in ecotoxicology, and once more, it provides us with a practical testing model for this purpose. First, newly emerged bees (D1) were found more vulnerable than 6 days-old bees (D6) to deltamethrin, a widely used α-

A practical approach to the sampling, fixation, softening, and sectioning of whole honey bees for histologic evaluation.

The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera) is economically important as the primary managed pollinator of many agricultural crops and for the production of various hive-related commodities. Honey bees are not classically or thoroughly covered in veterinary pathology training programs. Given their unique anatomic and biological differences from the other species more traditionally evaluated by veterinary pathologists, establishing routine and consistent methods for processing samples for histology ensures accurate diagnostic and research conclusions. We developed and tested several field protocols

Insectivorous bats are less active near freeways.

Traffic disturbances (i.e. pollution, light, noise, and vibrations) often extend into the area surrounding a road creating a 'road-effect zone'. Habitat within the road-effect zone is degraded or, in severe cases, completely unsuitable for wildlife, resulting in indirect habitat loss. This can have a disproportionate impact on wildlife in highly modified landscapes, where remaining habitat is scarce or occurs predominantly along roadside reserves. In this study, we investigated the road-effect zone for insectivorous bats in highly cleared agricultural landscapes by quantifying the change in ca

Halofuginone triggers a transcriptional program centered on ribosome biogenesis and function in honey bees.

We previously found that pharmacological inhibition of prolyl-tRNA synthetase by halofuginone has potent activity against Nosema ceranae, an important pathogen of honey bees. However, we also observed that prolyl-tRNA synthetase inhibition is toxic to bees, suggesting further work is necessary to make this a feasible therapeutic strategy. As expected, we found that pharmacological inhibition of prolyl-tRNA synthetase activity resulted in robust induction of select canonical ATF4 target genes in honey bees. However, our understanding of this and other cellular stress responses in general in hon

Binary and ternary toxicological interactions of clothianidin and eight commonly used pesticides on honey bees (Apis mellifera).

Although many toxicological evaluations have been conducted for honey bees (Apis mellifera), most of these studies have only focused on the effects of individual chemicals. However, honey bees are usually exposed to pesticide mixtures under field conditions. In this study, we examined the effects of individual pesticides and mixtures of clothianidin (CLO) with eight other pesticides [carbaryl (CAR), thiodicarb (THI), chlorpyrifos (CHL), beta-cyfluthrin (BCY), gamma-cyhalothrin (GCY), tetraconazole (TET), spinosad (SPI) and indoxacarb (IND)] on honey bees using a feeding method. Honey bee-collected pollen in agro-ecosystems reveals diet diversity, diet quality, and pesticide exposure.

European honey bees Apis mellifera are important commercial pollinators that have suffered greater than normal overwintering losses since 2007 in North America and Europe. Contributing factors likely include a combination of parasites, pesticides, and poor nutrition. We examined diet diversity, diet nutritional quality, and pesticides in honey bee-collected pollen from commercial colonies in the Canadian Maritime Provinces in spring and summer 2011. We sampled pollen collected by honey bees at colonies in four site types: apple orchards, blueberry fields, cranberry bogs, and fallow fields. Pro
