[Small bowel obstruction caused by acute invasive enteric anisakiasis].

Anisakiasis usually occurs in the stomach and can easily be diagnosed by digestive tract endoscopy as opposed to enteric anisakiasis which is very rare and difficult to be diagnosed definitively. The most important and useful tool in diagnosing enteric anisakiasis is obtaining an accurate patient history of having eaten raw fish before the onset of symptoms. We report a case of small bowel obstruction caused by acute invasive enteric anisakiasis. A 60-year-old woman visited the emergency room suffering from sudden abdominal pain. She had eaten raw fish 1 day before the onset of symptom. Radiol

Identification of anisakid nematodes from the Southern Baltic Sea using PCR-based methods.

Four common species of Baltic anisakids Anisakis simplex, Hysterothylacium auctum, Contracaecum osculatum from fish (the last one also from the grey seal) and C. rudolphii from cormorants were examined using PCR-RFLP technique for working out the method allowing their identification and differentiation. A fragment of nuclear DNA containing intergenic regions (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA together with adjacent sequences of genes coding 18S and 28S rRNA (in total; approximately 1500 bp) was amplified and the products were digested using three endonucleases Hin fI, Hae III and Pvu II. Digestive anisakiasis: clinical manifestations and diagnosis according to localization.

OBJECTIVES: Digestive anisakiasis is a parasitic disease whose clinical manifestations depend on the effect of Anisakis simplex on the digestive tract wall. Larvae are acquired by eating raw or poorly cooked fish. It is estimated that this entity is currently under-diagnosed, although publications are becoming increasingly common. We analyse our series of digestive anisakiasis checking localization and studying its relationship with symptoms and method of diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We review 23 cases of digestive anisakiasis registered between 1989 and 2001, and confirmed by the measurem

Chronic anisakiasis presenting as a mesenteric mass.

Chronic anisakiasis is a rare entity, and its diagnosis is difficult. We report a case of chronic anisakiasis with multiple gastrointestinal manifestations presenting as a palpable mesenteric mass, diagnosed by specific serology and histologic findings. We describe the computed tomographic appearance of this mass and the pathologic correlations. To our knowledge, this is the first time this mesenteric location has been detected by imaging before surgery.

Metazoan parasites from odontocetes off New Zealand: new records.

Information about the parasite fauna of spectacled porpoises and cetaceans from New Zealand waters in general is scarce. This study takes advantage of material archived in collections of the Otago Museum in Dunedin and Massey University in Auckland, sampled from cetacean species found stranded along the New Zealand coastline between 2007 and 2014. Parasites from seven species of cetaceans (spectacled porpoise, Phocoena dioptrica (n = 2 individuals examined); pygmy sperm whale (n = 1); long-finned pilot whale, Globicephala melas (n = 1); Risso's dolphin, Grampus griseus (n = 1); short-beaked co

Immunological characteristics and localization of the Trichinella spiralis glutathione S-transferase.

Trichinella spiralis glutathione S-transferase (TsGST) was isolated from crude extracts of L1 larvae by glutathione-affinity chromatography. Two closely migrating polypeptides with molecular masses of 28.5 and 28 kDa were identified by electrophoresis. Three isoforms of pI 5.6, 5.8, and 6.0 were detected by isoelectric focusing. Purified TsGST showed a low transferase activity as measured with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene; glutathione peroxidase activity was also demonstrated using cumene hydroperoxide. A rabbit antiserum against TsGST reacted by western blot with crude extracts of Trichinella

Far away from home: gastrointestinal parasites trace the journey of a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) from the Wadden Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

Grey seals, Halichoerus grypus (GSs), inhabit cold temperate and subarctic waters along the North Atlantic Ocean. Individuals of GS can regularly disperse towards southern areas (ca. 38°N-39°N) but occurrence at lower latitudes is exceptional. On 18 February 2022, a 217-cm-long male of GS was detected in waters off the SW Atlantic coast of Spain (37°N), then entered the western Mediterranean Sea and wandered for 15 days until he died. Here, we use gastrointestinal parasites to investigate the geographical origin of the GS and the length of the journey towards Mediterranean waters. Seven helmin

The hidden sense of symptoms: urticaria can be beneficial.

Evolutionary Medicine can be useful when analysing the origin of disease and symptoms. Acute urticaria or anaphylaxis is bothersome and potentially life-threatening. We analyse this symptom-complex in the context of Gastro-allergic Anisakiasis (GAA), where the human is an incidental host for the cosmopolitan fish-nematode Anisakis simplex (A. simplex). The immunological response against this nematode resembles that against other helminths, but overt expression of allergic symptoms is by far more frequent in GAA. This could be due to the missing co-evolutionary relationship between host and par

Pathological and immunohistochemical study of gastrointestinal lesions in dolphins stranded in the Canary Islands.

This paper describes the gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of gastrointestinal lesions and regional lymph nodes of six common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), 11 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and six Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) found stranded along the coasts of the Canary Islands. The most common lesion was chronic granulomatous gastritis of the glandular stomach, associated with the parasite Pholeter gastrophilus, and characterised by the parasites, their eggs, or parasite debris in the mucosa, submucosa or tunica muscularis, surround

Characterisation of anisakid nematodes with zoonotic potential by nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences.

Larvae of three species of anisakid nematode from fish, Anisakis simplex, Hysterothylacium aduncum and Contracaecum osculatum, were characterised genetically using a molecular approach. The nuclear ribosomal DNA region spanning the first internal transcribed spacer, the 5.8S gene and the second internal transcribed spacer was amplified and sequenced. The lengths of the first and second internal transcribed spacer sequences of the three species ranged from 392 to 449 bp and 262 to 347 bp, respectively, whereas the 5.8S sequence was 157 bp. For the three species, the G+C contents for the three r

Intestinal anisakiasis: US in diagnosis.

Eighteen consecutive patients with intestinal anisakiasis were studied with high-resolution ultrasound (US) and barium studies. US showed markedly thickened bowel loops associated with luminal narrowing, swelling of Kerckring folds, and decreased peristalsis. A small amount of ascitic fluid around the bowel loops was found, and cytologic examinations of the ascites revealed a dense infiltration of eosinophils. Barium studies demonstrated segmental mucosal edema of the small intestine: The most common site was the distal ileum, and the mean length of the edematous lesion was 19 cm. All patients

Palaeogenomic analysis reveals helminth infections in pre-Columbian individuals consistent with fisher-gatherer subsistence at the Jabuticabeira II sambaqui, Southern Brazil.

The sambaqui (shellmounds) people are recognized as fisher-gatherers who inhabited the coastal regions of Brazil, with a subsistence on a diet composed of fish, molluscs, and plants. Paleoparasitological investigations in these open-air sites are challenged by the severe taphonomic processes affecting parasite vestige preservation. Previous palaeogenetic work reported parasite helminth infection by Ascaris sp. in an individual from Jabuticabeira II (JABII) sambaqui, located in the Santa Catarina state, Brazil (2890 ± 55 to 1805 ± 65 years BP). To expand our knowledge about helminth infections

Host-parasite interactions of the sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) from the Atlanto-Iberian Waters.

The European sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) is one of the most abundant small pelagic clupeids and holds significant commercial value. Adult specimens were obtained along the Western and Southern Iberia, covering three ICES sub-divisions: 9aCN-Northerwestern Iberia, 9aCS-Southern Iberia and 9aS-South Iberia. A parasitological survey was carried out to characterize sardine parasite fauna and to assess its potential as a proxy for the spatial distribution of free-living parasite biodiversity and sardine trophic interactions, based on parasite richness and diversity. Parasites were a

Mullus barbatus L. and Mullus surmuletus L. from western Mediterranean waters (SE Spain) are infected by Hysterothylacium fabri, but not by zoonotic nematodes. Possible impact on fish hosts.

In order to know whether there is a risk of anisakiasis (or anisakidosis) by consumption of fish of the genus Mullus from the western Mediterranean Sea, which are appreciated for their quality, an epidemiological survey was carried out to evaluate the occurrence of zoonotic or potentially zoonotic nematodes in M. barbatus and M. surmuletus. Although the presence of the third larval stage (L3) of anisakids (Anisakis and Contracaecum) has been previously described in these fish, the results showed the absence of anisakids and the presence, never in muscle, of L3 and L4 of raphidascaridids of the

The non-glycosylated protein of Toxocara canis MUC-1 interacts with proteins of murine macrophages.

Toxocariasis is a neglected parasitic disease caused predominantly by larvae of Toxocara canis. While this zoonotic disease is of major importance in humans and canids, it can also affect a range of other mammalian hosts. It is known that mucins secreted by larvae play key roles in immune recognition and evasion, but very little is understood about the molecular interactions between host cells and T. canis. Here, using an integrative approach (affinity pull-down, mass spectrometry, co-immunoprecipitation and bioinformatics), we identified 219 proteins expressed by a murine macrophage cell line

Genera and Species of the Anisakidae Family and Their Geographical Distribution.

Nematodes of the Anisakidae family have the ability to infest a wide variety of aquatic hosts during the development of their larval stages, mainly marine mammals, aquatic birds, such as pelicans, and freshwater fish, such crucian carp, these being the hosts where the life cycle is completed. The participation of intermediate hosts such as cephalopods, shrimp, crustaceans and marine fish, is an important part of this cycle. Due to morphological changes and updates to the genetic information of the different members of the family, the purpose of this review was to carry out a bibliographic sear

Epidemiological Scenario of Anisakidosis in Spain Based on Associated Hospitalizations: The Tip of the Iceberg.

BACKGROUND: The risk of infection with Anisakis has been recognized for some time, but it is now emerging due to major awareness, better diagnostic techniques, and increasing preference for raw or lightly cooked food. Spain has the second-highest reported incidence after Japan, though the real anisakidosis burden is unknown because of the scarcity of epidemiological data. This study provides a 19-year review of anisakidosis-related hospitalizations describing epidemiological trends and patient characteristics. METHODS: We performed a retrospective descriptive study using the Spanish Hospitali

Hepatic anisakiasis mimicking metastatic liver tumour.

INTRODUCTION: Anisakiasis is a parasitic disease caused by anisakid nematode larvae, which are found in raw or undercooked fish. It occurs more frequently in the digestive tract, but has also been reported outside the gastrointestinal tract. This report details a case of rare hepatic anisakiasis that was initially diagnosed as metastatic rectal cancer. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old male underwent radical resection for stage III rectal cancer followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for six months. Seven months after surgery, a new, 10 mm diameter area of low density was seen in segment 4/8 mar

Parasitic infections in the East Asian finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis sunameri living off the Chinese Yellow/Bohai Sea coast.

Parasitic disease is among the major causes of health problems in marine mammals. However, little information on parasitic species composition and infection levels in finless porpoises (Neophocaena spp.) is available. In this study, we report the first systematic survey on parasitic infections in the East Asian finless porpoise N. asiaeorientalis sunameri (EAFP) living off the Chinese Yellow/Bohai Sea coast. Using both morphological and molecular methods, 5 parasitic helminths were identified: Campula oblonga in the liver and pancreas; Synthesium seymouri in the pyloric stomach and duodenum am

Evaluation of different Mediterranean essential oils as prophylactic agents in anisakidosis.

CONTEXT: Anisakis Dujardin 1845 (Anisakidae) nematodes can cause gastrointestinal and allergic diseases when humans eat raw or undercooked seafood containing larvae. There is currently no drug available in the market against this parasitic disease, and the study of plant-derived molecules could be useful in the discovery of effective compounds. OBJECTIVE: This research assesses the biocidal activity of a range of essential oils (EOs) from some Mediterranean plants against larvae found in the musculature of fresh fish. MATERIALS AND METHODS: EOs composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-
