Hallucinations and Related Perceptual Phenomena in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Inflammatory Arthritis: A Cross-sectional Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: The INSPIRE (Investigating Neuropsychiatric Symptom Prevalence and Impact in Rheumatology Patient Experiences) research project explored neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases (SARDs), identifying hallucinatory experiences as lesser known but impactful symptoms. Following consultations with clinicians and patients, areas of focus included the prevalence, sensory modalities, insight, timings, and emotional valence of hallucinations in SARDs. Our previous research shows that hallucinations and related perceptual phenomena often go unreported

Articulatory speech measures can be related to the severity of multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is one of the most frequent communication disorders in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), with an estimated prevalence of around 50%. However, it is unclear if there is a relationship between dysarthria and the severity or duration of the disease. OBJECTIVE: Describe the speech pattern in MS, correlate with clinical data, and compare with controls. METHODS: A group of MS patients (n = 73) matched to healthy controls (n = 37) by sex and age. Individuals with neurological and/or systemic conditions that could interfere with speech were excluded. MS group clinical dat

The effect of gabapentin on gap detection and forward masking in young and old gerbils.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory temporal processing frequently appears more affected in old subjects than would be predicted by the degree of peripheral hearing loss, pointing to an age-dependent central processing deficit. In parallel, an age-dependent decline of inhibitory function has been demonstrated in the auditory pathway, suggesting a causal relationship between temporal processing and inhibition. Gabapentin has been specifically synthesized as a potential gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA) mimetic with the capability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Gabapentin treatment ameliorated tinnitus in a r

Vibratory Onset of Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia and Muscle Tension Dysphonia: A High-Speed Video Study✰.

OBJECTIVE: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) is a challenging voice disorder to diagnose, often erroneously diagnosed as muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) or vocal tremor, due to its similarity in auditory and perceptual presentation. Assessments using laryngoscopy or strobolaryngoscopy procedures have demonstrated limited utility in the diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia. High-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) provides visualization of the precise vibratory pattern of phonatory onset and thus, offers an alternative to previous diagnostic strategies for visual diagnosis of AdSD. The purpose of this stud

Assessment of Voice and Speech Attributes in Adult Patients with Myasthenia Gravis: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects neuromuscular junction, resulting in fluctuating muscle weakness. Speech and voice can be affected by MG due to the involvement of bulbar muscles and muscular weakness, resulting in dysarthria. This work aimed to assess speech and voice attributes in adult patients with MG in comparison to normal individuals to highlight the effect of MG on speech and voice and its impact on quality of life. METHODS: This study involved 40 participants (over 18 years old), who were divided into two groups matched for age and se

Integrative genomic and multi-omics analyses identify oxidative stress-related pathways and druggable targets for tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a complex auditory perceptual disorder often accompanied by neuroinflammatory responses and metabolic abnormalities. Increasing evidence suggests that persistent oxidative stress, together with its interactions with immune regulation and energy metabolism, contributes to the pathophysiology of tinnitus. However, the molecular mechanisms by which oxidative stress drives tinnitus development remain to be systematically elucidated. METHODS: We integrated GWAS meta-analysis with DNA methylation, gene expression, and protein QTLs for 1,844 oxidative stress-related genes. Ca

Implementation of Eclectic Voice Therapy Program via Telepractice in Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders: A Preliminary Efficacy Study.

PURPOSE: Hyperfunctional voice disorder (HFVD) has a multifaceted origin. Individuals with HFVD work in professions that demand high vocal usage and are bound to work for longer hours with very inflexible work schedules. In consequence, it can be speculated that an eclectic voice therapy program that uses combinatory approaches delivered via telepractice could bring about better efficiency of voice in these individuals. Nevertheless, very less attempts have been made in these lines. Therefore, the present study aims to implement eclectic voice therapy via telepractice and examine the efficacy

Automatic GRBAS Scoring of Pathological Voices using Deep Learning and a Small Set of Labeled Voice Data.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory-perceptual evaluation frameworks, such as the grade-roughness-breathiness-asthenia-strain (GRBAS) scale, are the gold standard for the quantitative evaluation of pathological voice quality. However, the evaluation is subjective; thus, the ratings lack reproducibility due to inter- and intra-rater variation. Prior researchers have proposed deep-learning-based automatic GRBAS score estimation to address this problem. However, these methods require large amounts of labeled voice data. Therefore, this study investigates the potential of automatic GRBAS estimation using deep le

Visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception: two separate neural circuits for perceptual learning.

A remarkable example of rapid perceptual learning is the visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception, which can result in either a bias (ventriloquism after-effect) or an improvement (multisensory enhancement) in auditory localization. Here, we examine the possibility that these after-effects might depend on two distinct neural pathways (geniculostriate vs. collicular-extrastriate). To this end, patients with a lesion of the striate cortex (hemianopic patients) or temporoparietal cortex (neglect patients) were asked to localize weak sounds, before and after a brief exposure to repetiti

Developmental disruptions and behavioral impairments in rats following in utero RNAi of Dyx1c1.

Developmental malformations of cortex have been shown to co-occur with language, learning, and other cognitive deficits in humans. Rodent models have repeatedly shown that animals with such developmental malformations have deficits related to auditory processing and learning. More specifically, freeze-lesion induced microgyria as well as molecular layer ectopias have been found to impair rapid auditory processing ability in rats and mice. In humans, deficits in rapid auditory processing appear to relate to later impairments of language. Recently, genetic variants of four different genes involv

Cochlear implantation in a patient with sensori-neural deafness secondary to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy and can result in profound sensori-neural hearing loss with deficiency in speech perception out of proportion to that which would be expected if the loss was cochlear in origin. This study investigates whether the reintroduction of auditory synchrony by means of cochlear implantation will improve speech perception in those with dys-synchrony related to impairment of temporal processing abilities secondary to CMT. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old male presented with a grad

Personal amplification for school-age children with auditory processing disorders.

BACKGROUND: Children with auditory processing disorders (APD) are described to have a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) difficulty. Frequency-modulated (FM) systems have been reported to improve this situation. Yet the use of personal amplification that may be more portable has not been attempted. PURPOSE: To determine whether personal amplification would result in improvement in speech-in-noise performances (attentiveness and speech recognition) and daily functioning in children with diagnosed APD. In addition, the desired hearing aid features (such as required gain, directional microphone and noi

Epidemiological Patterns and Treatment Outcomes in a Private Practice Community Voice Clinic.

OBJECTIVES: Voice therapy is administered by speech-language pathologists in multiple practice settings, including private practice community voice clinics. However, the evidence for diagnosis patterns and voice treatment outcomes in community voice clinics is very limited. The purpose of this study was to extend knowledge from a previous investigation by assessing the epidemiological patterns of patient referrals to a private practice community voice clinic across a 4-year period (50 months) and to measure the effectiveness of treatment outcomes for patients who were followed up with voice th

Auditory and visual lexical neighborhoods in audiovisual speech perception.

Much evidence suggests that the mental lexicon is organized into auditory neighborhoods, with words that are phonologically similar belonging to the same neighborhood. In this investigation, we considered the existence of visual neighborhoods. When a receiver watches someone speak a word, a neighborhood of homophenes (ie, words that look alike on the face, such as pat and bat) is activated. The simultaneous activation of a word's auditory and visual neighborhoods may, in part, account for why individuals recognize speech better in an auditory-visual condition than what would be predicted by th

Justo Gonzalo (1910-1986): a pioneer of brain dynamics.

The present work offers an overview of the pioneering contributions of the neuroscientist Justo Gonzalo to the study of the human cerebral cortex, within the historical context of his time and in relation to current research. Gonzalo initially trained under Gonzalo Rodríguez Lafora (a disciple of Santiago Ramón y Cajal) and always maintained a close relationship with him and his circle, connecting him to the Spanish Neurological School (Cajal's school). He also trained in neurology in Austria and Germany (1933-1935). The research he called brain dynamics began during the Spanish Civil War (193

Validity of the Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia in the Persian Language in Sustained Vowel, Sentence, and All-Voiced Sentence Contexts.

PURPOSE: Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia (CSID) characterizes and objectively quantifies characteristics of voice quality. The findings of CSID's impact in determining dysphonia characteristics in different languages, however, are unclear but important if this tool is to be used cross-linguistically. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to determine the validity of CSID in Persian speakers. METHOD: Persian-speaking participants were assigned to two groups: patients with voice disorders (n = 102) and vocally healthy speakers (n = 38). They produced a sustained vowel /ɑ/ and a Persian c
