Muscle tissue adaptations to hypoxia.

This review reports on the effects of hypoxia on human skeletal muscle tissue. It was hypothesized in early reports that chronic hypoxia, as the main physiological stress during exposure to altitude, per se might positively affect muscle oxidative capacity and capillarity. However, it is now established that sustained exposure to severe hypoxia has detrimental effects on muscle structure. Short-term effects on skeletal muscle structure can readily be observed after 2 months of acute exposure of lowlanders to severe hypoxia, e.g. during typical mountaineering expeditions to the Himalayas. Acculturative stress in Latin-American immigrants: an assessment proposal.

The aim of this paper was to develop an instrument to assess levels of stress experienced by Latin-American immigrants in their acculturative process in Spain. A sample of 692 immigrants from Latin America, aged 20 to 63 years, took part on this study (54.9% males and 45.1% females). A 24-item questionnaire with high reliability (.92) was elaborated. Six factors related to acculturative stress were found: 1) discrimination and rejection; 2) differences with the out-group (native Spaniards); 3) citizenship problems and legality; 4) problems concerning social relationships with other immigrants;

Characterization of Latin American migrants at risk for Trypanosoma cruzi infection in a non-endemic setting. Insights into initial evaluation of cardiac and digestive involvement.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas disease (CD), a potentially fatal disease characterized by cardiac disorders and digestive, neurological or mixed alterations. T. cruzi is transmitted to humans by the bite of triatomine vectors; both the parasite and disease are endemic in Latin America and the United States. In the last decades, population migration has changed the classic epidemiology of T. cruzi, contributing to its global spread to traditionally non-endemic countries. Screening is recommended for Latin American populations residing in non-endemic countries. METHODS: The present

Randomized Trial of Benznidazole for Chronic Chagas' Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: The role of trypanocidal therapy in patients with established Chagas' cardiomyopathy is unproven. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, multicenter, randomized study involving 2854 patients with Chagas' cardiomyopathy who received benznidazole or placebo for up to 80 days and were followed for a mean of 5.4 years. The primary outcome in the time-to-event analysis was the first event of any of the components of the composite outcome of death, resuscitated cardiac arrest, sustained ventricular tachycardia, insertion of a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, cardiac tr

Mapping the global burden of early-onset Parkinson's disease: socioeconomic and regional inequalities from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUNDS: Early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) presents a significant financial burden on healthcare systems and medical expenses. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive quantitative assessments to fully understand the extent of this burden. The Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) initiative aims to provide a standardized and thorough evaluation of these factors on a global, regional, and national scale. This study aimed to calculate the global burden of EOPD and characterize regional disparities, SDI-based inequalities, and gender differences in disease burden, with a focus on trend

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global burden of mental disorders: a counterfactual modeling study from 1990 to 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the global burden of mental disorders, yet the gap between observed and counterfactual burdens without the pandemic, especially for major depressive and anxiety disorders, remains unexplored. To assess this gap, including its impact on specific regions and populations, thereby guiding future mental health services and policy development. Data of age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate (ASDR) for mental disorders from 1990 to 2021 were extracted from the Global

The economic burden of lung cancer in low- and lower-middle-income countries: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lung Cancer is one of the four most frequent malignant neoplasms in the world, and first in mortality. In 2020, lung cancer resulted in roughly 1.8 million deaths globally. Lung cancer is a major public health problem in low and lower-middle income countries, where high rates of tobacco smoking, environmental pollution, and limited access to healthcare resources contribute to a significant burden of the disease. The objective of our review was to compare costs among available countries and identify major cost drivers. METHODS: A systematic database search was performed according t

Understanding progress and challenges in women's health and wellbeing in exemplar countries: a time-series study identifying positive outliers.

BACKGROUND: Women's health and wellbeing (WHW) forms a multidimensional continuum across the life course, with intersecting power dynamics including socioeconomic and ethnic positioning. The WHW Exemplars project uses robust quantitative approaches to identify best-performing low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) in improving WHW across the entire life course. METHODS: Using the life course approach, we created a list of 32 cross-sectional indicators belonging to nine dimensions based on a conceptual framework to assess progress in WHW. Small population countries (<5 million people),

Serological evaluation for Chagas disease in migrants from Latin American countries resident in Rome, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) is a systemic parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, whose chronic phase may lead to cardiac and intestinal disorders. Endemic in Latin America where it is transmitted mainly by vectors, large-scale migrations to other countries have turned CD into a global health problem because of its alternative transmission routes through blood transfusion, tissue transplantation, or congenital. Aim of this study was to compare the performance of two commercially available tests for serological diagnosis of CD in a group of Latin American migrants liv

Morphofunctional characteristics of flight-related traits in deltamethrin-resistant and susceptible Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) of the Argentinean Chaco.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, transmitted by triatomine bugs, is a major vector-borne parasitic disease in Latin America. Triatoma infestans, the principal vector in the Southern Cone, is primarily controlled through residual insecticide spraying. However, resistance to pyrethroids, especially in Northern Argentina and Southern Bolivia, has emerged. Resistant T. infestans populations exhibit reduced fitness, including impacts on reproductive success and dispersal capacity. This study investigates the flight potential and morphological changes in T. infestans populations with varying levels of in

Replication of live attenuated influenza vaccine viruses in human nasal epithelial cells is associated with H1N1 vaccine effectiveness.

In the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 influenza seasons, live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) generated reduced vaccine effectiveness (VE) against circulating H1N1 strains. This reduced VE coincided with the introduction of pandemic 2009 H1N1 (A/H1N1pdm09) vaccine virus reassortants, in place of pre-2009 seasonal H1N1 strains. Here, we explored one specific hypothesis for reduced VE; decreased replicative fitness of A/H1N1pdm09 strains in humans. Two A/H1N1pdm09 strains with reduced VE, A/California/07/2009 (A/CA09) and A/Bolivia/559/2013 (A/BOL13), were compared to pre-2009 seasonal H1N1 strains

Foods confiscated from non-EU flights as a neglected route of potential methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus transmission.

The emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in food-producing animals has provoked a great concern in the presence of MRSA in associated foodstuff. In this study, we have assessed for the first time the presence of MRSA in food confiscated from non-EU flights. We performed a search for MRSA among 195 food samples confiscated from passengers on flights from twenty-one non-EU countries in 2012 and 2013. One hundred and seventeen meat samples of diverse animal origin (including antelope, beef, chicken, duck, guinea pig, pork, rodents, and turkey), 75 dairy products (74 che

Building resilient and response-ready influenza vaccination programs for pandemic preparedness: a comparative analysis from five middle-income countries.

UNLABELLED: Influenza vaccination programs are critical in reducing the morbidity and mortality from seasonal influenza and bolstering pandemic preparedness. However, there is a notable lack of information about the factors contributing to resilient and response-ready influenza vaccination programs in middle-income countries (MICs). This study set out to identify determinants of resilient and response-ready seasonal influenza vaccination programs in MICs. METHODS: This study used a collective case study design to analyze structural and programmatic elements of resiliency and response-readines
