Click-evoked responses from the exposed intracranial portion of the eighth nerve during vestibular nerve section: bipolar and monopolar recordings.

We compare the click-evoked compound action potentials from the exposed intracranial portion of the eighth nerve using bipolar and monopolar recording electrodes in patients undergoing vestibular nerve section. It is assumed that a bipolar recording electrode will only record propagated neural activity in the auditory nerve, whereas a monopolar recording electrode may in addition record electrical activity that is conducted passively to the recording site. The results of the present study confirm that the earliest detectable propagated neural activity in the intracranial portion of the auditor

Transient appearance of calbindin-D28k-positive neurons in the superior olivary complex of developing rats.

Calbindin-D28k (CaBP) is a calcium-binding protein that is prominent in various parts of the mammalian auditory system. In order to shed some light on the possible role of CaBP during ontogeny, when calcium ions play key roles in several processes, the location of CaBP was examined immunocytochemically in the auditory system of the developing rat. This study focuses on the principal nuclei of the superior olivary complex, which show distinct CaBP labeling in the adult. Consistent with previous reports in the rat and other mammals, CaBP immunoreactivity in adults was intense in somata of the me

Comparisons of electrophysiological and psychophysical fitting methods for cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared two different versions of an electrophysiology-based software-guided cochlear implant fitting method with a procedure employing standard clinical software. The two versions used electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) thresholds for either five or all twenty-two electrodes to determine sound processor stimulation level profiles. Objective and subjective performance results were compared between software-guided and clinical fittings. DESIGN: Prospective, double-blind, single-subject repeated-measures with permuted ABCA sequences. STUDY SAMPLE: 48 po

Early Onset Region and Cell Specific Alterations of Doublecortin Expression in the CNS of Animals with Sound Damage Induced Hearing Loss.

Sound damage induced hearing loss has been shown to elicit changes in auditory and non-auditory brain regions. A protein critical for neuronal migration and brain development, doublecortin (DCX), has been used as a marker of central nervous system (CNS) neuroplasticity. DCX is expressed in unipolar brush cells (UBCs) of the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), cerebellar parafloccular lobe (PFL) and neuronal precursor cells in the sub-granular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). Sound damage induced hearing loss has been shown to differentially impact DCX expression months later. To identify

Thin-film micro-electrode stimulation of the cochlea in rats exposed to aminoglycoside induced hearing loss.

The multi-channel cochlear implant (CI) provides sound and speech perception to thousands of individuals who would otherwise be deaf. Broad activation of auditory nerve fibres when using a CI results in poor frequency discrimination. The CI also provides users with poor amplitude perception due to elicitation of a narrow dynamic range. Provision of more discrete frequency perception and a greater control over amplitude may allow users to better distinguish speech in noise and to segregate sound sources. In this research, thin-film (TF) high density micro-electrode arrays and conventional plati

Paraplegia: prolonged closed-loop standing with implanted nucleus FES-22 stimulator and Andrews' foot-ankle orthosis.

Our object is to develop a reliable, implantable and closed-loop functional electrical stimulator (FES) hybrid system for safe prolonged standing in paraplegic individuals. Open-loop FES systems rapidly induce muscle fatigue that limits paraplegic standing to less than 20 and typically 10 min. Since December 1991, a paraplegic male (CS: 23 years old, T10 level, Asia: A) has been implanted with the first Nucleus FES-22 channel stimulating system (Cochlear Ltd., Lane Cove, N.S.W., Australia). Epineural platinum disc electrodes (2.5 mm) were placed on branches of the femoral, gluteal and sciatic

A computer model of auditory efferent suppression: implications for the recognition of speech in noise.

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [Ferry, R. T., and Meddis, R. (2007). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 122, 3519-3526] is us

Self-Adjustment of Upper Electrical Stimulation Levels in CI Programming and the Effect on Auditory Functioning.

OBJECTIVES: With current cochlear implants (CIs), CI recipients achieve good speech perception in quiet surroundings. However, in acoustically complex, real-life environments, speech comprehension remains difficult and sound quality often remains poor. It is, therefore, a challenge to program CIs for such environments in a clinic. The CI manufacturer Cochlear Ltd. recently introduced a remote control that enables CI recipients to alter the upper stimulation levels of their user programs themselves. In this concept, called remote assistant fitting (RAF), bass and treble controls can be adjusted

Time course and frequency specificity of sub-cortical plasticity in adults following acute unilateral deprivation.

Auditory deprivation and stimulation can change the threshold of the acoustic reflex, but the mechanisms underlying these changes remain largely unknown. In order to elucidate the mechanism, we sought to characterize the time-course as well as the frequency specificity of changes in acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs). In addition, we compared ipsilateral and contralateral measurements because the pattern of findings may shed light on the anatomical location of the change in neural gain. Twenty-four normal-hearing adults wore an earplug continuously in one ear for six days. We measured ipsilater

Can comodulation masking release occur when frequency changes could promote perceptual segregation of the on-frequency and flanking bands?

A common characteristic of natural sounds is that the level fluctuations in different frequency regions are coherent. The ability of the auditory system to use this comodulation is shown when a sinusoidal signal is masked by a masker centred at the signal frequency (on-frequency masker, OFM) and one or more off-frequency components, commonly referred to as flanking bands (FBs). In general, the threshold of the signal masked by comodulated masker components is lower than when masked by masker components with uncorrelated envelopes or in the presence of the OFM only. This effect is commonly refe

Paradoxical effects of contralateral white noise on evoked otoacoustic emissions in ears with acoustic neuroma.

A contralateral suppression effect on evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) is usually present in normally hearing subjects and in patients with sensorineural hearing loss, while it is absent or reduced in ears to which the vestibular nerve has been cut and in ears with acoustic neuroma (AN). To date, a paradoxical effect, that is an increase in EOAE amplitude during contralateral stimulation, has been described in one ear with sensorineural hearing loss of unknown aetiology and in three ears with AN (two in the present paper). Evidence has been provided that the contralateral suppression effec

Conserved and divergent development of brainstem vestibular and auditory nuclei.

Vestibular function was established early in vertebrates and has remained, for the most part, unchanged. In contrast, each group of tetrapods underwent independent evolutionary processes to solve the problem of hearing on land, resulting in a remarkable mixture of conserved, divergent and convergent features that define extant auditory systems. The vestibuloacoustic nuclei of the hindbrain develop from a highly conserved ground plan and provide an ideal framework on which to address the participation of developmental processes to the evolution of neuronal circuits. We employed an electroporati

The role of gamma-aminobutyric acid/glycinergic synaptic transmission in mediating bilirubin-induced hyperexcitation in developing auditory neurons.

Hyperbilirubinemia is a common clinical phenomenon observed in human newborns. A high level of bilirubin can result in severe jaundice and bilirubin encephalopathy. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying bilirubin excitotoxicity are unclear. Our previous studies showed the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)/glycine switches from excitatory to inhibitory during development in the ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN), one of the most sensitive auditory nuclei to bilirubin toxicity. In the present study, we investigated the roles of GABAA/glycine receptors in the induction of bilirubin hyper

[Effect of contralateral noise exposure on otoacoustic distortion product emissions in man].

The influence of contralateral white noise with levels of 50 and 60 dBnHL on the amplitude of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) was measured. Thirty ears of normally hearing adults (17 women, 13 men, mean age 26.5 +/- 5.3 years) were examined. Two representative DPOAE frequencies 2f1-f2 = 1342 Hz and 6341 Hz were compared. The lower DPOAE frequency was placed in the frequency region where middle-ear pressure has a strong influence on DPOAE amplitudes, the higher DPOAE frequency respectively in the region where lesser influence is exerted by middle-ear pressure. During the applic

Auditory efferent function is affected in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated efferent medial olivocochlear (MOC) function in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Various afferent auditory abnormalities have been described in MS, but there is a paucity of data on efferent function. The brain stem is a site of predilection for MS plaques and the efferent MOC pathway may be affected at this level. METHODS: The study included 30 patients who had normal hearing. According to MRI findings, they were divided into two groups: those with an identifiable brain stem lesion (n = 10) and those with MS lesions in other parts of the central nervous

The somatostatin systems of the guinea-pig brainstem.

The tetradecapeptide somatostatin has been shown to have a widespread distribution in the rat brain. Except for its role in the inhibition of growth hormone secretion, the function of this molecule in the remainder of the central nervous system is unknown. To address this problem, the distribution of somatostatin-like immunoreactivity in the guinea-pig brainstem was examined systematically. Of 116 nuclei and/or areas, 34 nuclei had somatostatin neurons, 32 did not have any immunoreactivity and the remainder had immunoreactive fibers and/or terminals. Developmental expression of calretinin in the mouse cochlea.

This study investigated the expression of calretinin (CR) in the mouse cochlea from embryonic day 17 (E17) to adulthood through immunofluorescence. At E17, CR immunoreactivity was only detected in the inner hair cells (IHCs). At E19, the IHCs and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) begin to express CR. At birth, CR immunoreactivity was confined primarily to the IHCs and the majority of the SGNs, as identified by TUJ1, both the cytoplasm and the nucleus of SGNs exhibited CR positivity. At postnatal day 2 (P2), auditory nerve fibers reaching the IHCs were stained for CR. CR continued to be expressed
