Spatial Patterns and Impacts of Environmental and Climatic Factors on Canine Sinonasal Aspergillosis in Northern California.

Sinonasal aspergillosis (SNA) causes chronic nasal discharge in dogs and has a worldwide distribution, although most reports of SNA in North America originate from the western USA. SNA is mainly caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, a ubiquitous saprophytic filamentous fungus. Infection is thought to follow inhalation of spores. SNA is a disease of the nasal cavity and/or sinuses with variable degrees of local invasion and destruction. While some host factors appear to predispose to SNA (such as belonging to a dolichocephalic breed), environmental risk factors have been scarcely studied. Because A.

Occurrence, fate, and environmental loss of antiparasitic veterinary drugs in animal waste.

Antiparasitic veterinary drugs, specifically anthelmintics, anticoccidials and ectoparasiticides, are increasingly recognised as global environmental contaminants, entering agroecosystems primarily via animal excreta and accumulating in manure and slurry before transfer to soils, water bodies and crops. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of these drug classes, covering usage patterns, excretion and persistence dynamics, occurrence in manure and slurry, within-manure transformation pathways, environmental fate and transport pathways, ecotoxicological effects on non-target organism,

Non-negligible health risks caused by inhalation exposure to aldehydes and ketones during food waste treatments in megacity Shanghai.

Aldehydes and ketones in urban air continue to receive regulatory and scientific attention for their environmental prevalence and potential health hazard. However, current knowledge of the health risks and losses caused by these pollutants in food waste (FW) treatment processes is still limited, especially under long-term exposure. Here, we presented the first comprehensive assessment of chronic exposure to 21 aldehydes and ketones in urban FW-air environments (e.g., storage site, mechanical dewatering, and composting) by coupling substantial measured data (383 samples) with Monte Carlo-based

Occurrence and fate of bacterial endotoxins in the environment (air, water, wastewater) and remediation technologies: An overview.

Endotoxins as the outer membrane of most Gram-Negative Bacteria (GNB) and typical toxic biochemical produced by microorganisms are identified as one of the emerging pollutants. These microbial by-products are harmful compounds that can be present in various environments including air, water, soil, and other ecosystems which were discussed in detail in this review. Environmental and occupational exposure caused by endotoxin occurs in water and wastewater treatment plants, industrial plants, farming, waste recovery, and composting facilities. Even though the health risk related to endotoxin inje

Do poly(lactic acid) microplastics instigate a threat? A perception for their dynamic towards environmental pollution and toxicity.

Fears concerning microplastics (MPs) environmental fate and persistence are progressively expanding on a global basis, with the emphasis given to manufacturing bioplastics for substituting petro-derived plastics extensively growing. Among them, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) holds a pioneering role towards the replacement of conventional polymeric materials, owing to its multifunctional properties, enclosing superior mechanical properties, low cost, renewability, great biocompatibility, transparency, and thermoplasticity launching many fields of application. Due to the wide applicability of PLA in se

Photochemical transformation mechanisms of dissolved organic matters (DOM) derived from different bio-stabilization sludge.

Bio-stabilization sludge contains numerous dissolved organic matter (DOM) that could enter aquatic environments by soil leaching after sludge land use, but a clear understanding of their photochemical behavior is still lacking. In this study, we systematically investigated the photoactivity and photochemical transformation of aerobic composting sludge-derived DOM (DOMACS) and anaerobic digestion sludge-derived DOM (DOMADS) by using multispectral analysis coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). The results indicated that DOMACS and DOMADS have a hig

Bioaerosol health effects and exposure assessment: progress and prospects.

Exposures to bioaerosols in the occupational environment are associated with a wide range of health effects with major public health impact, including infectious diseases, acute toxic effects, allergies and cancer. Respiratory symptoms and lung function impairment are the most widely studied and probably among the most important bioaerosol-associated health effects. In addition to these adverse health effects some protective effects of microbial exposure on atopy and atopic conditions has also been suggested. New industrial activities have emerged in recent years in which exposures to bioaeros

Human and other faeces as breeding media of the trachoma vector Musca sorbens.

The fly Musca sorbens Wiedemann (Diptera: Muscidae) apparently transmits Chlamydia trachomatis, causing human trachoma. The literature indicates that M. sorbens breeds predominantly in isolated human faeces on the soil surface, but not in covered pit latrines. We sought to identify breeding media of M. sorbens in a rural Gambian village endemic for trachoma. Test breeding media were presented for oviposition on soil-filled buckets and monitored for adult emergence. Musca sorbens emerged from human (6/9 trials), calf (3/9), cow (3/9), dog (2/9) and goat (1/9) faeces, but not from horse faeces,

A Thermoreversible Gelation Pathway to Plant Cuticle-Inspired Biopolymer Aerogel Monoliths Based on Network-Spherulitic Crystal Assemblies.

Plant-based and compostable biopolymers are vital in global shifts toward green materials. However, their adoption in aerogel fabrication is limited by material and structure-performance deficiencies (e.g., hydrophilicity, low surface area, brittleness, limited tactile tailorability). Nevertheless, stereocomplexation, or co-crystallization between polymeric enantiomers, offers a pathway toward overcoming such limitations. Herein, stereocomplexation is used to fabricate poly(lactide) (PLA)-based aerogels, with stereocomplex crystals (SCs) assembling into a highly ordered morphology/topology wit

Alternation magnitudes of organic matter composition determines priming effect of biodegradable microplastics on lake carbon emission.

The ubiquitous existence of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) in aquatic ecosystems necessitates a thorough understanding of their impact on aquatic carbon cycling. Although BMPs are known to release dissolved organic matter (DOM) into aquatic environment, their priming effect (PE) on native organic carbon remains largely unexplored. Here, we employed 13C-stable isotope labeling to quantify PEs induced by three common BMPs-polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), and polybutylene succinate (PBS) in artificial lake water. The addition of all three BMPs to lake DOM enhanced CO2 emiss

Mechanistic Origins of Enhanced PET Hydrolase Activity from Molecular Dynamics and Deep Learning-Assisted Network Analysis.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) hydrolase-based biodegradation offers a promising route for plastic waste remediation, yet the dynamic origins of high activity and their linkage across catalytic stages still require further elucidation. Here, we focus on the Leaf-Branch Compost Cutinase (LCC) system to reveal the possible mechanistic origins underlying the elevated activity of the LCC variants. By integrating molecular dynamics simulations, enhanced sampling, and deep learning-assisted network analysis, we systematically investigate the critical prereactive stage of amorphous PET adsorption a

Polyhydroxyalkanoate production from poly(ethylene furanoate) using a completely biotechnological approach.

Plastics are indispensable in modern society, but their increasing production and disposal pose serious environmental challenges, including pollution and the depletion of non-renewable resources. Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF), a bio-based polyester composed of ethylene glycol and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), is attracting attention as a sustainable alternative to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). In this study, we developed a fully biotechnological upcycling system for PEF. Our approach involved enzymatic depolymerization of PEF to release FDCA, followed by microbial conversion of FDC

Preparation and properties of poly (butylene succinate-co-butylene terephthalate)/poly (L-lactic acid) composite films reinforced with coal gangue as a functional filler.

Poly (butylene succinate-co-butylene terephthalate)/poly (L-lactic acid) (PBST/PLLA) composite films based on industrially compostable polyester matrices have attracted increasing attention owing to their favorable mechanical properties and packaging potential. In this work, PBST/PLLA was used as the polymer matrix, and an epoxy chain extender was introduced to improve the compatibility between the two phases. Surface-modified coal gangue was further incorporated as a functional filler to regulate the properties of the composite films. The results demonstrated that the dispersibility and inter

Characterization of phage vB_EfS_C1 and investigation of antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against vancomycin-susceptible and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium.

E. faecium is listed among the ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter), which are responsible for a significant proportion of global deaths. Vancomycin-resistant E. faecium (VREfm) is the leading species responsible for human infections, and the limited therapeutic options make VREfm a public health problem. This study aimed to isolate and characterize a novel phage against E. faecium and evaluate its activity against vancomycin-sensitive E. faecium (VSEfm) and VREfm. We isolated a

A review of suspect and non-target screening of agriculture-related organic contaminants.

BACKGROUND: Production systems that aim to reduce waste and promote the reuse of materials contribute to more sustainable food systems. However, these approaches can also lead to the accumulation and recirculation of chemical hazards from organic waste to the soil and, ultimately, to food. To address these risks and assess the safety and effectiveness of waste reuse in agriculture, non-target screening (NTS) and suspect screening (SS) analytical methodologies are essential, as they enable the detection of chemical residues, pollutants, and unintended by-products in soil, crops, and compost. Unraveling fate of sulfonamide antibiotics in sandy loam soil and water of India and environmental risk assessment.

Antibiotic resistance is an alarming issue nowadays due to the increased use of antibiotics in humans, veterinary, fisheries, etc. Sulfonamides are one group of highly used antibiotics frequently detected in the environmental matrices. So, in the present study, we evaluated the sorption and dissipation of two commonly detected sulfonamide antibiotics in water (sulfamethazine (SMZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMXZ)) in sandy loam soil and irrigation waters in the tropical region. Soil samples were processed using modified QuEChERS and the residues were quantified using LC-MS/MS. Optimized sample proc

Detection and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Salmonella enterica recovered from house fly intestinal tracts and environments of selected broiler farms in Texas.

The entry of drug-resistant Salmonella enterica into the food supply is a challenge to public health and food safety. One emerging concern is the role of synanthropic insects for moving microbial pathogens throughout poultry production systems, where insects commonly thrive. We investigated the presence and phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility of S. enterica from insect and environmental samples from broiler farms. Insects were collected throughout the broiler house and adjacent compost barn. Environmental samples (poultry feed, drinking water, fresh litter, and feces) were collected simult

Prevalence of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus and other aspergilli in the environment from Argentina.

Azole resistance has emerged as a new therapeutic challenge in patients with aspergillosis. Various resistance mutations are attributed to the widespread use of triazole-based fungicides in agriculture. This study explored the prevalence of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus (ARAF) and other aspergilli in the Argentine environment. A collection of A. fumigatus and other aspergilli strains isolated from soil of growing crops, compost, corn, different animal feedstuffs, and soybean and chickpea seeds were screened for azole resistance. No ARAF was detected in any of the environmental samples

Megaplasmid Dissemination in Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella Serotypes from Backyard and Commercial Broiler Production Systems in the Southeastern United States.

Over the past decade, there has been a rise in U.S. backyard poultry ownership, raising concern for residential area antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Salmonella contamination. This study aims to lay the groundwork to better understand the persistence of AMR Salmonella in residential broiler production systems and make comparisons with commercial systems. Ten backyard and 10 commercial farms were sampled at three time points across bird production. Both fecal (n = 10) and environmental (soil, n = 5, litter/compost, n = 5, feeder, and waterer swabs, n = 6) samples were collected at each visit on da

Effects of temperature, humidity, light, and soil on drug stability in hair: a preliminary study for estimating personal profiles using micro-segmental analysis of corpse hair.

PURPOSE: Micro-segmental hair analysis (MSA), which enables detailed measurement of the distribution of drugs in a single hair strand, is useful for examining the day of death and drug use history of a person. However, corpses are often found in severe environments, such as soil and freezers, which affect the drug contents in hair. Therefore, we examined the effects of temperature, humidity, light, and soil on drug stability in hair as a preliminary study to estimate personal profiles using MSA of corpse hair. METHODS: Four hay-fever medicines (fexofenadine, epinastine, cetirizine, and deslor
