Complicated grief associated with hurricane Katrina.

BACKGROUND: Although losses are important consequences of disasters, few epidemiological studies of disasters have assessed complicated grief (CG) and none assessed CG associated with losses other than death of loved one. METHODS: Data come from the baseline survey of the Hurricane Katrina Community Advisory Group, a representative sample of 3,088 residents of the areas directly affected by Hurricane Katrina. A brief screen for CG was included containing four items consistent with the proposed DSM-V criteria for a diagnosis of bereavement-related adjustment disorder. RESULTS: Fifty-eight and

Post-hurricane fluid conservation measures fail to reduce IV fluid use in critically ill children.

BACKGROUND: There are risks associated with excessive intravenous fluid (IVF) administration in critically ill children. Previous efforts have described opportunities to reduce positive cumulative fluid balance (CFB) in this population but have not been widely implemented. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a national IVF shortage led to the implementation of IVF conservation guidelines. We sought to determine if this was associated with a reduction in IVF use and CFB. METHODS: The present study is a four-site cohort study of critically ill children utilizing a federated data collection framewo

Measurement invariance of the Spanish University of California at Los Angeles Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Reaction Index for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition-brief form in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.

OBJECTIVE: Natural disasters are a salient source of traumatic exposures for many youth, although not all youth exposed to these traumatic experiences go on to develop posttraumatic stress symptoms or other maladaptive reactions. Given the low resource context and high need for psychological support engendered by natural disasters globally, efficient, evidentiary, culturally appropriate tools for assessing risk are needed to effectively identify youth most in need of services. METHOD: The present study used a sample of 96,108 Puerto Rican youth collected in 2018, 5-9 months after Hurricane Ma

Temporal and Spatial Impacts of Hurricane Damage on West Nile Virus Transmission and Human Risk.

Hurricanes have profound impacts on zoonotic pathogen ecosystems that exhibit spatial and temporal waves in both distance from and time since the event. Wind, rain, and storm surge directly affect mosquito vectors and animal hosts of these pathogens. In this analysis, we apply a West Nile virus transmission model parameterized for the Northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico to explore the effect of event timing of hurricane landfall, time since the event, and damage extent on human West Nile virus neuro-invasive disease (WNV-NID) risk. Early-season hurricanes, which make landfall prior to the pea

Do current smokers use more cigarettes and become more dependent on nicotine because of psychological distress after a natural disaster?

Natural disasters increase nicotine dependence and cigarette consumption, but the exact mechanisms and conditions responsible for this increase are relatively unclear. This study explored whether posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms were pathways to increased nicotine dependence and cigarette consumption after disaster exposure using a representative sample of current smokers who were living in New Orleans at the time Hurricane Katrina struck (n = 175), and a comparison sample of smokers from Memphis (n = 222) who were not directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We assessed whether nic

Pretyphoon panic attack history moderates the relationship between degree of typhoon exposure and posttyphoon PTSD and depression in a Vietnamese sample.

BACKGROUND: Predisaster risk factors are related to postdisaster psychopathology even at relatively low levels of disaster exposure. A history of panic attacks (PA) may convey risk for postdisaster psychopathology and has been linked to a wide range of psychiatric disorders in Western and non-Western samples. The present study examined the main and interactive effects of pretyphoon PA and level of typhoon exposure in the onset of posttyphoon posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in a Vietnamese sample of typhoon survivors. Flooding, Sociospatial Risk, and Population Health.

Climate change and population settlement patterns are altering the severity and spatial dimensions of flooding. Despite associational evidence linking flood exposure to population health in the United States, few studies have used counterfactual strategies to address confounding or examined how sociospatial determinations of risk, such as floodplain delineation, affect well-being. Using the case of Hurricane Harvey, I leverage novel, repeated cross-sectional health survey data from Houston immediately predisaster (N = 2,540) and six to nine months postdisaster (N = 2,798), linked to local floo

Evaluating the impact of hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic on colorectal cancer incidence in Puerto Rico: An interrupted time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Major events, such as Hurricanes Irma and Maria and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted Puerto Rico's health system. Lack of access to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening services may have impeded timely diagnosis. The authors examined the impact of these events on CRC incidence in Puerto Rico. METHODS: The Puerto Rico Central Cancer Registry database allowed the authors to obtain CRC cases from 2012 to 2021. An interrupted time-series analysis was performed to examine changes in CRC incidence immediately after and during the periods after the hurricanes and t

Indoor dust, immune activation, and household exposure risk after Hurricane Maria: a two-year pilot prospective cohort study in Puerto Rico.

BACKGROUND: Hurricane Maria left many homes in Puerto Rico with prolonged flooding, structural damage, and indoor microbial growth, conditions that can drive respiratory illness and immune dysregulation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the pro-inflammatory potential of post-flooding indoor dust and track two-year shifts in household risk profiles by integrating pro-inflammatory biomarkers, fungal exposure, and self-reported structural damage, mental health, and respiratory outcomes. METHODS: Dust samples were collected from 50 households in a San Juan community one year and again from 35 of those same

Trajectories of Posttraumatic Stress in Youths After Natural Disasters.

IMPORTANCE: Disaster exposure is associated with the development of posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms in youths. However, little is known about how to predict which youths will develop chronic PTS symptoms after disaster exposure. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate PTS symptom trajectories among youths after 4 major US hurricanes and assess factors associated with those trajectories. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used integrative data analysis to combine data from 4 studies of youths' responses to natural disasters (hurricanes Andrew [1992], Charley [2004], Ike [2005], and Katri

Can AI weather models predict out-of-distribution gray swan tropical cyclones?

Predicting gray swan weather extremes, which are possible but so rare that they are absent from the training dataset, is a major concern for AI weather models and long-term climate emulators. An important open question is whether AI models can extrapolate from weaker weather events present in the training set to stronger, unseen weather extremes. To test this, we train independent versions of the AI weather model FourCastNet on the 1979-2015 ERA5 dataset with all data, or with Category 3-5 tropical cyclones (TCs) removed, either globally or only over the North Atlantic or Western Pacific basin

An experimental test of risk perceptions under a new hurricane classification system.

During a hurricane, it is vital that individuals receive communications that are easy to process and provide sufficient information to allow informed hurricane preparedness decisions and prevent loss of life. We study how different hurricane warning scales, the traditional Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (SSHWS) versus the newly developed Tropical Cyclone Severity Scale (TCSS), impact intent to evacuate and understanding of hurricane severity. We use a between-subject design where participants are assigned to either the traditional SSHWS or the new TCSS scale. We collected data in a large-

Leveraging cloud-based SAR remote sensing and GNOME numerical simulation for modeling oil spill trajectory in the Black Sea.

On December 15, 2024, a severe storm in the southern Kerch Strait led to the sinking of the Russian tanker Volgoneft-212 and the grounding of Volgoneft-239, resulting in a catastrophic oil spill into the marine ecosystem. The present investigation utilizes the GNOME model to examine the role of wind, currents, diffusion, seawater temperature, and salinity in determining the trajectory and fate of the oil spill at Kerch Strait and the adjoining Black Sea. The spill was simulated as a continuous release of 5000 tons of oil over five days at the southern mouth of the Kerch Strait. A 15-day model

Connecting Future Environmental Trends and Assessments of Fish and Wildlife Resources of Concern: A Case Study of Big Pine Key, Florida.

Changes in hydrologic and climatic trends will influence the ecology of Florida, and climate scenarios agree that many areas of Florida are susceptible to sea-level rise impacts. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Climate Change Action Program focuses on a framework to examine climate change effects on fish, wildlife, plants, and habitats of all three. To follow the program, this study examines how to incorporate current scientific knowledge about regional climate projections in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service analyses. It provides climate change and sea-level rise projections based on 2017 p

Tropical cyclone exposure and risk of adverse birth outcomes in urban and rural areas of Georgia.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are highly destructive weather disasters. Prior studies of TCs and birth outcomes often examined single storms or single TC characteristics (e.g. maximum wind speed) and rarely assessed urban/rural differences. To better understand TC impacts on perinatal health, we evaluated associations between multiple TC exposure metrics and several adverse birth outcomes and considered urban-rural variations. We conducted a population-based time series analysis of 2436 478 singleton births in Georgia from 2000-2018, in which individual-level state birth records were aggregated to t
