Ameloblastoma, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor, and glandular odontogenic cyst show a distinctive immunophenotype with some myoepithelial antigen expression.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic neoplasms have some morphologic overlap with salivary gland neoplasms, many of which show myoepithelial differentiation. In the 1980s, an ultrastructural study identified a population of myoepithelial-like cells in calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor. Myoepithelial derived tumors have since been shown to have distinct immunohistochemical profiles. METHODS: We examined a series of odontogenic neoplasms, including 11 ameloblastomas, four calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors, five glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs), and five keratocystic odontogenic tumors with a

Rapidly Expanding Odontogenic Myxoma: An Entity With Diagnostic Challenges-A Case Report.

Odontogenic myxoma is a rare benign odontogenic tumor having locally aggressive behavior. It frequently affects the females in the second or third decade of life and commonly occurs in the mandibular posterior region as a slow-growing lesion. The aggressive behavior is often seen in maxillary lesions. However, this case report describes odontogenic myxoma with aggressive or rapidly expanding behavior occupying the ramus and angle of the mandible in few months. An 18-year-old girl reported with a chief complaint of gradually increasing painless swelling in the posterior region of the mandible f

Utility of BRAF V600E immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis of mandibular ameloblastomas.

Ameloblastoma, odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), and dentigerous cyst (DC) can have similar radiographic and histological appearances. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of BRAF immunohistochemistry in discerning mandibular ameloblastomas from OKCs and DCs. This retrospective cohort study included patients treated between 1998 and 2018. Inclusion criteria include incisional biopsy-proven mandibular ameloblastoma, OKC, or DC, and sufficient tissue for immunohistochemistry. The primary predictor variable was the type of lesion. The primary outcome variable was the presence/absenc

A survey of oral and maxillofacial biopsies in children: a single-center retrospective study of 20 years in Pelotas-Brazil.

Despite the large number of published cases about oral and maxillofacial pediatric lesions, the literature is scarce on epidemiological studies regarding the prevalence of these entities. This study retrieved oral and maxillofacial pediatric lesions from the Center of Diagnosis of Oral Diseases (CDDB) at the Dental School of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), comprising a 20-year period (1983-2002). From the total of 9,465 biopsies received in this period, 625 (6.6%) were from children aged 0 to 14 years. Regardless of the histopathological diagnosis, patient data referring to lesion l

Comparative Ki-67 expression and apoptosis in the odontogenic keratocyst associated with or without an impacted tooth in addition to unilocular and multilocular varieties.

It is not known whether the presence of an impacted tooth or the radiographic types in an odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) change the clinical biologic behavior and therapeutic approaches. This study evaluated the comparative proliferative activity and apoptosis in OKC associated with or without an impacted tooth, as well as between the unilocular and multilocular OKC varieties. Immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 as a proliferation marker and the apoptotic reactions were assessed by the TUNEL method for 32 cases of OKC (OKC with impacted tooth, n=16; OKC without impacted tooth, n=16) and 10 c

Bilateral mandibular cysts associated with cyclosporine use: a case report.

Cyclosporin A (CsA) is used in the treatment of patients undergoing renal transplantation. There are a number of side effects associated with its use. In particular, the gingival overgrowth represents the most important in the oral cavity. The authors present a case of bilateral mandibular cysts in an 8-year-old boy, treated with CsA after renal transplantation. The genesis of the mandibular cysts might be associated with the combined use of CsA and a calcium channel blocker post-transplantation. CsA-induced gingival overgrowth might contribute to cysts by two mechanisms: interference with con

Eruption cysts: retrospective clinical study of 36 cases.

The eruption cyst is a lesion associated with an erupting tooth. It appears as a transparent, bluish, blue or blue-black swelling of the alveolar mucosa, over a temporal or permanent tooth in eruption. The analysis of the thirty-six eruption cysts cases studied, corresponding to twenty-seven patients, revealed that their most frequent location is in the maxillary permanent dentition, and that they mostly occur in a single presentation, and in an age-range of between five and nine years. Six cases out of the twenty-seven patients studied showed the characteristic of presenting two or more erupt

CrossViT with ECAP: Enhanced deep learning for jaw lesion classification.

BACKGROUND: Radiolucent jaw lesions like ameloblastoma (AM), dentigerous cyst (DC), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), and radicular cyst (RC) often share similar characteristics, making diagnosis challenging. In 2021, CrossViT, a novel deep learning approach using multi-scale vision transformers (ViT) with cross-attention, emerged for accurate image classification. Additionally, we introduced Extended Cropping and Padding (ECAP), a method to expand training data by iteratively cropping smaller images while preserving context. However, its application in dental radiographic classification remains u

Clinical perspectives on premature tooth eruption and cyst formation in neonates.

Premature eruption of teeth occurs in 1 of every 2,000 births. The reported association between natal teeth and serious, rare, inherited syndromes suggests that particular caution should be exercised in examination of newborns having prematurely erupted teeth. The ectomesenchyma, from which the orofacial structures develop, undergoes a complex, coordinated series of steps of proliferation and differentiation during the first two months in utero. At approximately seven weeks the presumptive mandibular and maxillary arches show a bandlike ectodermal thickening called the dental lamina. Odontogen

p53 expression in odontogenic keratocyst epithelium.

The expression of p53 protein was studied in odontogenic keratocysts (OKC, 11 solitary, 5 recurrent and 6 NBCCS cysts), radicular (RC, n = 5) and dentigerous (DC, n = 5) cysts, using a panel of antibodies to p53 (clone BP53-12, clone 1801 and polyclonal CM1) and a sensitive biotin-streptavidin method on paraffin embedded sections. Of the three antibodies tested, clone BP53-12 gave the most intense and consistent nuclear staining pattern. Clone 1801 and polyclonal CM1 stained only 38% and 71% OKC linings, respectively, but not RC and DC linings. However, BP53-12+ cells were detected in the epit

Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis of Odontogenous Cysts and Ameloblastomas-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Odontogenic cysts and ameloblastomas (AB) are mostly asymptomatic, often discovered later due to severe symptoms, and only histopathological examination provides definitive diagnosis. AI-assisted diagnostics offer a fast, noninvasive, painless diagnostic tool. To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis aiming to evaluate the classification, detection, and segmentation performance of artificial intelligence (AI) for odontogenic cysts and ABs as distinct entities and to determine if it can achieve clinically acceptable accuracy.
