Influence of veneer thickness on residual stress profile in veneering ceramic: measurement by hole-drilling.

OBJECTIVES: The veneering process of frameworks induces residual stresses and can initiate cracks when combined with functional stresses. The stress distribution within the veneering ceramic as a function of depth is a key factor influencing failure by chipping. This is a well-known problem with Yttria-tetragonal-zirconia-polycrystal based fixed partial dentures. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of veneer thickness on the stress profile in zirconia- and metal-based structures. METHODS: The hole-drilling method, often used for engineering measurements, was adapted fo

Composite morphology of the bone and associated support-tissue interfaces to osseointegrated dental implants: TEM and HVEM analyses.

Correlated transmission electron and high-voltage electron microscopic analyses examined the undecalcified bone and associated support tissues of 60 endosseous titanium blade and titanium and ceramic root-form implants in dogs. The implants supported fixed partial dentures for up to 2 years. Data obtained from this investigation suggest that a range of tissues, both mineralized and unmineralized, support osseointegrated dental implants. This study examined the tissues apposing not just isolated aspects of the implant surface, but the entire length of the implant, and found that mineralized and

The relationship of smoking on peri-implant tissue: a retrospective study.

The term "peri-implantitis" is used to describe the formation of deep mucosal pockets around dental implants, inflammation of the peri-implant mucosa, and increased resorption of peri-implant bone. It has been speculated that when left untreated, peri-implantitis can result in implant failure. This retrospective study examines a possible correlation between smoking and the appearance of peri-implantitis. The clinical and radiographic observations of 366 implants in 107 patients who smoke were compared with those of a group of 1000 implants in 314 nonsmoking patients. Despite the retrospective

Maxillary bone grafting for insertion of endosseous implants: results after 12-124 months.

Insertion of endosseous implants in the atrophic maxilla is often complicated because of lack of supporting bone. Augmentation of the floor of the maxillary sinus with autogenous bone graft has been proven to be a reliable treatment modality, at least in the short term. The long-term clinical and radiographic outcome with regard to the grafts, the implants and satisfaction of the patients with their implant-supported overdenture was studied in 99 patients. The sinus floor was augmented with bone grafts derived from the iliac crest (83 subjects, 162 sinuses, 353 implants), the mandibular symphy

The use of bovine porous bone mineral in combination with collagen membrane or autologous fibrinogen/fibronectin system for ridge preservation following tooth extraction.

Preservation of the alveolar ridge following tooth extraction is desirable since it facilitates placement of endosseous implants and may improve the adverse esthetics often associated with fixed partial dentures. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical effectiveness of bovine porous bone mineral (BPBM) used as a graft material combined with either guided tissue regeneration (GTR) or with the autologous fibrinogen/fibronectin system (AFFS) in preserving alveolar ridges following tooth extraction. Twenty-six patients who required extraction of two or more anterior or bicuspid teeth

Dental implants in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a case series study.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) encompasses six types of hereditary connective tissue disorders, with skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, and connective tissue fragility as the main findings. Oral health is also affected, sometimes including periodontitis and tooth loss. This is the first report on dental implant treatment for patients with hypermobility or classic EDS. Five female patients aged 19 to 68 years who tolerated treatment under local anesthesia and did not require bone augmentation were enrolled in the study and received 16 implants. They were observed for 2 to 12 years. No
