The prevalence of intestinal parasite infection among program participants of the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for the period 1986-1987 was estimated, and demographic factors associated with increased risk for infection were identified. The overall prevalence of infection was 7.3%. The two most prevalent infections were Enterobius vermicularis (4.5%) and strongyloides stercoralis (1.2%). Males and individuals with severe or profound mental retardation were twice as likely to be positive for the presence of intestinal parasites as females and indivi

The role of Enterobius vermicularis in appendicitis has been disputed. The aims of this retrospective study were to determine the prevalence of E. vermicularis in surgically removed appendices and to relate this to the age and sex of the patient, the time of the year, the presence of symptoms and the histological findings. The study included all appendices received in this laboratory during the 5 year period from 1984 through to 1988. There were 1867 appendices during this period of which 1108 were acutely inflamed and 759 were not inflamed (although 149 of these showed other pathological chan

INTRODUCTION: Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the vermiform appendix can mimic appendicitis. In these cases, laparoscopic appendicectomy runs a risk of contamination of the peritoneal cavity with worms. We reviewed our practice to suggest changes that will reduce the release of worms and propose methods to use in case contamination occurs.
METHODS: 498 patients underwent appendicectomy over a sixty-three month period. 13 (2.6%) patients had confirmed E. vermicularis on histology of whom 6 (46%) were performed laparoscopically. These patients' case notes were retrospectively reviewed.

The 28S rDNA from nine species of the genus Syphacia collected in Japan was sequenced, and the phylogenetic relationship was inferred from multiple sequence alignment of 28S rDNA by the MAFFT program. Phylogenetic tree indicates that S. petrusewiczi, which was the only species belonging to the subgenus Seuratoxyuris, has diverged earlier than other rodent pinworms examined and was distantly separated from the others genetically. It was revealed that S. agraria and S. vandenbrueli, whose subgeneric status has not been specified, belonged to the subgenus Syphacia together with other 6 species. S

In the present study, 142 persons admitted to the Camlihemşin Healthcare Center between July 2005 and January 2007, carriage of intestinal parasites was investigated in 93 male and 49 female patients. All of the stool samples were examined by using native-lugol technique. Cellophane tape method was applied to the 0-19 age group. Parasite cysts and/or eggs were found in total of 17,6 % of the patients. Of the patients carrying parasites, 64% (16/25) was female, and 36% (9/25) was male. Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histo-lytica/dispar and Enterobius vermicularis were respectively detected as

The susceptibility to Aspiculuris tetraptera of European Mus musculus hybrids is thought to reflect the disruption of genomic co-adaptation through recombination of the parental genomes. Here, we compared the susceptibility to this parasite between parents and experimental hybrids (intersubspecific until F4, intrasubspecific F1, F2) to clarify the contributions of heterosis and subspecies incompatibility. F1 showed hybrid vigor. Unlike intrasubspecific F2, intersubspecific F2 were less resistant than F1, but revealed no increased susceptibility relative to the parents. Intersubspecific F3 and

This study follows the evolution of the intestinal parasitic infections during a 5 year period between 2000-2004, detected at the inhabitants of the TBC Preventorium Gornesti from Mureş county. The 127 children included in the study are aged between 3 and 16 year, they attend a special kindergarten and a special school. The most important species of parasites found were Giardia lamblia, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hymenolepis nana and Trichuris trichiura. Most of the infected children had mono-parasitosis, only a few showed poly-parasitic infections with 2 parasites. In spite of the adequate treatme

Background: The role of Enterobius vermicularis infestation in the context of appendicitis is largely overlooked, but Enterobius vermicularis is considered an unexpected and significant appendicectomy finding. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of Enterobius vermicularis findings in appendectomies and to evaluate the clinical and histopathologic features of patients with Enterobius vermicularis-associated acute appendicitis and those with appendiceal Enterobius vermicularis infestation. Methods: The medical records of all children who underwent an appendectomy in two large

Paediatric gynaecological problems, especially those involving the vulvar area, are common in childhood. The conditions frequently seen include recurrent bacterial vulvovaginitis, vulvar irritation, labial adhesions and dermatological conditions. The presentation and management of these conditions will be reviewed.

During our day-to-day practice, we, as clinicians, occasionally come across patients whose symptomatology is atypical. In major teaching hospitals, it is usually easy to consult with other specialists to optimize patient management and standard of care. Our study patients were treated by the authors between January 1998 and January 2003. In this article, the authors report on 6 different cases of unexpected causes of pelvic pain, all of which were managed in a general gynecological unit at a major tertiary referral institution.

The flagellate Dientamoeba fragilis is a potential intestinal pathogen of humans. It is probably undervalued overall because its identification relies on permanent stains directly on fresh fecal specimens (Giemsa) or preserved in PVA or SAF (Trichrome or Iron-hematoxylin). During 1999 we processed stoll samples of 151 subjects and we searched also D. fragilis. We processed 105 cases of enteritis (82 children and 23 adults) and 46 samples of formed stools to investigate only for intestinal parasites (12 children and 34 adults). The microscopical observations were made on smears directly in sali

BACKGROUND: To determine if non-operative treatment is safe in children with acute appendicitis, we evaluated the incidence of unexpected findings after an appendectomy in children, and the influence they have on subsequent treatment.
METHODS: A historical cohort study (January 2004-December 2014) was performed including children, aged 0-17 years, who underwent an appendectomy for the suspicion of acute appendicitis. Patients were divided based upon histopathological examination. Unexpected findings were reviewed, as well as the subsequent treatment plan.
RESULTS: In total 484 patients were

OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this report was to present the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic aspects of a series of patients admitted to a reference hospital from Romania and found to be infected with intestinal nematodes. Additionally, we attempted to overview, for the first time in the international literature, the most relevant data regarding diseases caused by these helminthes in Romania.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have retrospectively investigated the medical records of patients admitted at Victor Babes Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Timisoara (Timis County) who pr

Most parasitic intestinal infestations in humans are sub-clinical and, therefore, they are rarely diagnosed. A number of general, non-specific symptoms of parasitic invasions are often attributed to other diseases. A parasitological examination of feces performed as part of this study confirmed the presence of intestinal parasites in 21.6% of samples. Among the patients who reported 6 different symptoms, the percentage of parasite-positive samples reached 80%. The obtained results suggest that coproscopic tests may establish the diagnosis in unclear cases, particularly in children. Many parasi

Symptoms related to vulvitis and vulvovaginitis are a frequent complaint in the paediatric age. Knowledge of the risk factors and the pathogenetic mechanisms, combined with thorough clinical examination, helps to distinguish between dermatological diseases, non-specific vulvitis and vulvovaginitis proper. On the basis of microbiological data, the most common pathogens prove to be Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae and Enterobius vermicularis; fungal and viral infections are less frequent. The possibility of isolating opportunistic pathogens should also be considered. In rare situat

A total of fifty stray dogs of both sex and of different ages were examined for natural infection with Echinococcus granulosus after post-mortem. Three main intestinal helminthes were recovered. These were in descending order of abundance Dipylidium caninum, Toxocara canis and E. granulosus. The latter worm was demonstrated in eight of them (16%). The sera of three out of 21 dog-hunters (14.3%) showed positive Echino-IHAT. Two of the hunters suffered Enterobius vermicularis and one of them had Taenia saginata as well. But, the abdominal X-ray of the two hunters was more or less normal and did
