Extensive reorganization of primary afferent projections into the gustatory brainstem induced by feeding a sodium-restricted diet during development: less is more.

Neural development is especially vulnerable to environmental influences during periods of neurogenesis and rapid maturation. In fact, short periods of environmental manipulations confined to embryonic development lead to significant changes in morphology and function. A guiding principal emerging from studies of sensory systems is that experimentally induced effects are most dramatic in higher neural levels (e.g., cortex) and primarily involve postnatal synaptic refinements. In contrast to other sensory systems, the gustatory system is particularly susceptible to the effects of deprivation muc

The superior colliculus subserves interhemispheric neural summation in both normals and patients with a total section or agenesis of the corpus callosum.

To verify the possibility that the superior colliculus (SC) subserves interhemispheric neural summation, we presented single or double white visual targets to one or both hemifields in normal participants and in patients lacking the corpus callosum (one with total callosotomy and one with callosal agenesis). Simple reaction time was typically faster with double than single stimuli, a phenomenon known as the redundant target effect (RTE); moreover, confirming previous results, we found a larger RTE in patients without callosum than in normals. In both groups, the redundancy gain was related to

Validation of an automated tractography method for the optic radiations as a biomarker of visual acuity in neurofibromatosis-associated optic pathway glioma.

INTRODUCTION: Fractional anisotropy (FA) of the optic radiations has been associated with vision deficit in multiple intrinsic brain pathologies including NF1 associated optic pathway glioma, but hand-drawn regions of interest used in previous tractography methods limit consistency of this potential biomarker. We created an automated method to identify white matter tracts in the optic radiations and compared this method to previously reported hand-drawn tractography. METHOD: Automated tractography of the optic radiation using probabilistic streamline fiber tracking between the lateral genicul

Comparative anatomy of marmoset and mouse cortex from genomic expression.

Advances in mouse neural circuit genetics, brain atlases, and behavioral assays provide a powerful system for modeling the genetic basis of cognition and psychiatric disease. However, a critical limitation of this approach is how to achieve concordance of mouse neurobiology with the ultimate goal of understanding the human brain. Previously, the common marmoset has shown promise as a genetic model system toward the linking of mouse and human studies. However, the advent of marmoset transgenic approaches will require an understanding of developmental principles in marmoset compared to mouse. In

Anterior visual pathway assessment by magnetic resonance imaging in normal-pressure glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To analyze the axonal architecture of the optic nerve in patients with normal-pressure glaucoma and determine whether these parameters correlate with the disease severity. METHODS: Using magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging (1.5-Tesla unit) and diffusion tensor (DT) MRI, we measured the optic nerve diameter, optic chiasm height and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) volume in patients with normal-pressure glaucoma and an age-matched control group. The retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFL) was determined by optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS: The study included 30 patients wi

Light acts through melanopsin to alter retinal waves and segregation of retinogeniculate afferents.

Waves of correlated activity sweeping across the early postnatal mouse retina promote the segregation and refinement of retinofugal projections. This process has been thought to be spontaneous and unaffected by visual experience. We found, however, that light prolongs spiking during the waves and enhances the segregation of retinogeniculate afferents, and that it did so by activating melanopsin-expressing, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells.

Central and peripheral auditory abnormalities in chinchilla animal model of blast-injury.

Exposure to blast overpressure or high-intensity sound can cause injuries to the auditory system, which leads to hearing loss or tinnitus. In this study, we examined the involvement of peripheral auditory system (PAS), and central auditory system (CAS) changes after exposure to blast overpressure (15-25 psi) on Day 1 and additionally during 7 days of post blast time period in chinchillas. Auditory brainstem response (ABR), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), and cochlear hair cell changes were measured or identified in post-blast period within 7 days to detect injuries in the PAS.

Clinically Significant Visual Deficits after Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Mesiotemporal Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) has recently gained popularity as a minimally invasive surgical option for the treatment of mesiotemporal epilepsy (mTLE). Similar to traditional open procedures for epilepsy, the most frequent neurological complications of LITT are visual deficits; however, a critical analysis of these injuries is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the visual deficits that occur after LITT for mTLE and their etiology. METHOD: We surveyed five academic epilepsy centers that regularly perform LITT for cases of self-reported postoperative visual deficits. For

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Detects Microstructural Differences of Visual Pathway in Patients With Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension.

Ocular hypertension (OHT), the common situation in adult patients in the outpatients, occurs ∼5% worldwide. However, there are still some practical problems in differentiation of OHT with early primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) using current standard methods. Application of high resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) enables us to the differentiate axonal architecture of visual pathway between POAG and OHT subjects. Among 32 POAG patients recruited (15 OHT and 14 control subjects), 62.5% of glaucoma were in early stage for the current study. All subjects underwent ophthalmological assessme

Does Chronic Tinnitus Alter the Emotional Response Function of the Amygdala?: A Sound-Evoked fMRI Study.

Tinnitus is often associated with strong negative thoughts and emotions which can contribute to a distressing and chronic long-term condition. The amygdala, the "feeling and reacting" part of the brain, may play a key role in this process. Although implicated in several theoretical models of tinnitus, quantification of activity in the human amygdala has only been made possible more recently through neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) but benefits from modified scanning parameters using a double-echo acquisition for improved BOLD sensitivity. This study thu

More than blindsight: Case report of a child with extraordinary visual capacity following perinatal bilateral occipital lobe injury.

Injury to the primary visual cortex (V1, striate cortex) and the geniculostriate pathway in adults results in cortical blindness, abolishing conscious visual perception. Early studies by Larry Weiskrantz and colleagues demonstrated that some patients with an occipital-lobe injury exhibited a degree of unconscious vision and visually-guided behaviour within the blind field. A more recent focus has been the observed phenomenon whereby early-life injury to V1 often results in the preservation of visual perception in both monkeys and humans. These findings initiated a concerted effort on multiple

Schizophrenia patients show deficits in shifts of attention to different levels of global-local stimuli: evidence for magnocellular dysfunction.

Abnormalities of attention and visual perception are well documented in schizophrenia. The global-local task is a measure of attention and perceptual organization that utilizes visual stimuli comprised of large letters (global level) made up of smaller letters (local level). Subjects identify target letters appearing at either the global or local level of the stimulus. In this study, we used a version of the global-local task specifically designed to examine lateralized hemispheric processing and attention shifting in 30 schizophrenia patients and 24 normal controls. Global-local stimuli were

Thalamic activity that drives visual cortical plasticity.

Manipulations of activity in one retina can profoundly affect binocular connections in the visual cortex. Retinal activity is relayed to the cortex by the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN). We compared the qualities and amount of activity in the dLGN following monocular eyelid closure and monocular retinal inactivation in awake mice. Our findings substantially alter the interpretation of previous studies and define the afferent activity patterns that trigger cortical plasticity.

The usefulness of clinical findings in localising lesions in Bell's palsy: comparison with MRI.

BACKGROUND: Although electrophysiological tests and brain MRI provide information about the site of the lesion in Bell's palsy, clinicians usually depend on clinical data. However, the accuracy of clinical findings in identifying lesions has never been evaluated. METHOD: A total of 57 patients with idiopathic peripheral facial palsy were included in this study. We determined the sites of the lesions based on associated symptoms and by brain MRI. We then compared the two to assess the value of clinical findings in determining lesion sites. RESULTS: Of the 57 patients, 27 were men. The mean ag

Age-related changes in brainstem auditory neurotransmitters: measures of GABA and acetylcholine function.

This study was designed to determine if there are age-related alterations in the bio-synthetic enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the degradative enzyme GABA-transaminase (GABA-T), and the uptake system for GABA in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (CIC), the cochlear nucleus (CN), and/or nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (NLL) of Fischer-344 rats. For purposes of comparison, the cholinergic neuronal system was studied in parallel in young adult (3-7 months), mature (15-17 months) and aged (24-26 months) rats. In young adults GAD activity was highest in the CIC (219 nmol/mg p

[Octopus perimetry in neuro-ophthalmologic diseases. A contribution to the problem of optimal program choice based on 427 cases].

From the patient population of the University Eye Clinic Basel 427 cases, who had been tested with the Octopus perimeter 201 because of neuro-ophthalmologic problems, were retrospectively examined. Above all it was interesting to find out, which program to use in order to get a maximum degree of information with a minimum of examinations. The quantitative programs 31 to 34 gave most often the clinically relevant information concerning the opticus- and chiasma affections. The only exception was the anterior ischemic opticoneuropathy where the semiquantitative program 07 delivered the better inf

Modulation of inhibitory activity by nitric oxide in the thalamus.

The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) is essential for the transfer of visual information from the retina to visual cortex, and inhibitory mechanisms can play a critical in regulating such information transfer. Nitric oxide (NO) is an atypical neuromodulator that is released in gaseous form and can alter neural activity without direct synaptic connections. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS), an essential enzyme for NO production, is localized in thalamic inhibitory neurons and cholinergic brain stem neurons that innervate the thalamus, although NO-mediated effects on thalamic inhibitory activi

Geniculate ganglion diverticulum: a potential imaging marker in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is often challenging in patients who do not present with classic symptoms. Brain MRI can play a pivotal role, as several imaging findings, such as an empty sella appearance (ESA), have been shown to be associated with IIH. Yet, none of the MRI signs have been shown to have a high sensitivity and specificity. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that presence of a geniculate ganglion diverticulum (GGD) is a potential imaging marker for the detection of IIH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an IRB-approved, single-institution

Distinct displacements of the optic radiation based on tumor location revealed using preoperative diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECT Visual field defects (VFDs) due to optic radiation (OR) injury are a common complication of temporal lobe surgery. The authors analyzed whether preoperative visualization of the optic tract would reduce this complication by influencing the surgeon's decisions about surgical approaches. The authors also determined whether white matter shifts caused by temporal lobe tumors would follow predetermined patterns based on the tumor's topography. METHODS One hundred thirteen patients with intraaxial tumors of the temporal lobe underwent preoperative diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) fiber tracking
