The Cys2/His2-type zinc finger transcription factor CsZAT10 positively regulates Cucumis sativus resistance against Bemisia tabaci by activating the plant defense system.

BACKGROUND: Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) are globally invasive agricultural pests that currently lack effective control measures. Cys2/His2-type zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) are ubiquitous transcription factors that play critical roles in regulating plant resistance to various stresses. However, it remains unclear whether these proteins modulate plant defense responses during whitefly infestation. This study investigates the function and mechanisms of the Cys2/His2-type zinc finger transcription factor CsZAT10 in regulating cucumber resistance to B. tabaci. RESULTS: CsZAT10 contains two zinc fi

Effect of Contact Insecticides on the Transmission of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' by Diaphorina citri During Sweet Orange Shoot Development.

Insecticide applications are commonly recommended for managing Diaphorina citri, the vector of huanglongbing (HLB), but their effectiveness in reducing transmission of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas), especially during continuous psyllid influx and shoot growth, remains unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy of foliar application of thiamethoxam and spinetoram in reducing CLas transmission in sweet orange seedlings. Two experiments were conducted up to 13 days after first spray. In experiment 1, CLas-positive psyllids were confined in seedlings every 2 days. Treatments were: con

How Did a Size-Divergent Water Strider Species Group Exhibiting an East Asia-Eastern North America Disjunction Originate and Diversify?

The classic East Asia-Eastern North America (EA-ENA) disjunction, well-documented in temperate plants, is typically attributed to the fragmentation of once-continuous high-latitude ranges by climatic cooling and regional extinction. Whether this model extends to insects, particularly aquatic groups, remains largely untested with genomic data. Here, we integrate whole-genome sequencing, ddRAD-seq and morphology with phylogenetic, phylogeographic, genotype-environment association (GEA) and niche modelling analyses to reconstruct the origin and diversification of the Aquarius conformis species gr

Persistence and recovery of dinotefuran in eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) foliage and twigs by UPLC-MS/MS and ELISA.

BACKGROUND: Dinotefuran, a systemic neonicotinoid insecticide, is approved for control of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) (Adelges tsugae Annand), an invasive sap-feeding insect that can kill eastern hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis). Dinotefuran is highly water soluble, facilitating more rapid translocation and HWA control than other neonicotinoids, but its persistence is not well-known. Samples of needles and twigs were collected in spring 2021 from 50 hemlocks treated with a dinotefuran basal trunk spray in 2018 or 2019 (131-145 weeks and 85-93 weeks before sampling, respectively). Processed samples

Defence priming in tomato by the green leaf volatile (Z)-3-hexenol reduces whitefly transmission of a plant virus.

Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) can induce defence priming, that is, can enable plants to respond faster or more strongly to future stress. The effects of priming by GLVs on defence against insect herbivores and pathogens have been investigated, but little is known about the potential of GLVs to prime crops against virus transmission by vector insects. Here, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to the GLV Z-3-hexenol (Z-3-HOL) can prime tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) for an enhanced defence against subsequent Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) transmission by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. Antimicrobial nano-zinc oxide-2S albumin protein formulation significantly inhibits growth of "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" in planta.

Huanglongbing (HLB, also known as citrus greening) is considered to be the most devastating disease that has significantly damaged the citrus industry globally. HLB is caused by the Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), the fastidious phloem-restricted gram-negative bacterium, vectored by the asian citrus psyllid. To date, there is no effective control available against CLas. To alleviate the effects of HLB on the industry and protect citrus farmers, there is an urgent need to identify or develop inhibitor molecules to suppress or eradicate CLas from infected citrus plant. In this paper, w

A distinct seed-transmissible strain of tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus infecting Chayote in India.

Chayote (Sechium edule (Jacq. Sw.) is a single seeded cucurbitaceous vegetable crop mainly grown for its fruit. During 2015-2016, mosaic and leaf distortion type of symptoms were observed in chayote plants in hilly regions of Tamil Nadu. The disease incidence was 50. 3-100% and yield loss was about 69.9% in Dindigul district. The infected chayote plants showed yellow spots, yellow mosaic, leaf curling, puckering, and enations. The fruits of infected plants were malformed and were not marketable. The begomovirus causing the disease was identified as a variant of tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus

Neural control and coordination of jumping in froghopper insects.

The thrust for jumping in froghopper insects is produced by a rapid, synchronous depression of both hind legs generated by huge, multipartite trochanteral depressor muscles in the thorax and smaller levator muscles in the coxae. A three-phase motor pattern activates these muscles in jumping. First, a levation phase lasts a few hundred milliseconds, in which a burst of spikes in the trochanteral levator motor neurons moves the hind legs into their fully cocked position and thus engages a mechanical lock between a coxa and a femur. Second, a cocked phase lasts a few seconds, in which a trochante

Exogenous Melatonin Modulates Rice Responses to Phloem-Feeding Insect Stress.

The white-backed planthopper (WBPH; Sogatella furcifera) is a destructive phloem-feeding hemipteran that significantly limits rice productivity by depleting assimilates and transmitting viral pathogens. Although melatonin is recognised as a multifunctional plant-signalling molecule, its defensive role against WBPH remains inadequately characterised. In this study, we demonstrate that exogenous melatonin application markedly enhances rice resilience to WBPH through coordinated regulation of growth, defence signalling, antioxidant activity and ionic homoeostasis. Melatonin increased seedling sur

Exogenous application of the plant signalers methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid induces changes in volatile emissions from citrus foliage and influences the aggregation behavior of Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri), vector of Huanglongbing.

Huanglongbing, also known as citrus greening, is a destructive disease that threatens citrus production worldwide. It is putatively caused by the phloem-limited bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (Las). Currently, the disease is untreatable and efforts focus on intensive insecticide use to control the vector, Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri). Emerging psyllid resistance to multiple insecticides has generated investigations into the use of exogenously applied signaling compounds to enhance citrus resistance to D. citri and Las. In the present study, we examined whether foliar ap

Immune responses induced by different genotypes of the disease-specific protein of Rice stripe virus in the vector insect.

Persistent plant viruses circulate between host plants and vector insects, possibly leading to the genetic divergence in viral populations. We analyzed the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Rice stripe virus (RSV) when it incubated in the small brown planthopper and rice. Two SNPs, which lead to nonsynonymous substitutions in the disease-specific protein (SP) of RSV, produced three genotypes, i.e., GG, AA and GA. The GG type mainly existed in the early infection period of RSV in the planthoppers and was gradually substituted by the other two genotypes during viral transmission. The two

Disruption of Vector Host Preference with Plant Volatiles May Reduce Spread of Insect-Transmitted Plant Pathogens.

Plant pathogens can manipulate the odor of their host; the odor of an infected plant is often attractive to the plant pathogen vector. It has been suggested that this odor-mediated manipulation attracts vectors and may contribute to spread of disease; however, this requires further broad demonstration among vector-pathogen systems. In addition, disruption of this indirect chemical communication between the pathogen and the vector has not been attempted. We present a model that demonstrates how a phytophathogen (Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus) can increase its spread by indirectly manipulati

Ant Interactions with Aroid Infructescences (Araceae) Used as Temporary Nesting Sites, Cohabiting with a Complex Endophagous Insect Community in a Neotropical Rainforest.

Ants are abundant and diverse in the tropics, nesting in different forest layers and utilizing a wide range of nesting sites, from specialized to opportunistic. To describe the floral interactions of endophagous insects in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Mexico), samples of Araceae infructescences were collected during an annual cycle at different altitudes. Ten species of Araceae belonging to the genera Dieffenbachia (1), Philodendron (5), Syngonium (3) and Xanthosoma (1) were investigated. A total of 334 infructescences were sampled, of which only 5.1% were found to be infested by ants. H

A new antimicrobial peptide, Pentatomicin, from the stinkbug Plautia stali.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play crucial roles in the innate immunity of diverse organisms, which exhibit remarkable diversity in size, structural property and antimicrobial spectrum. Here, we describe a new AMP, named Pentatomicin, from the stinkbug Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Orthologous nucleotide sequences of Pentatomicin were present in stinkbugs and beetles but not in other insect groups. Notably, orthologous sequences were also detected from a horseshoe crab, cyanobacteria and proteobacteria, suggesting the possibility of inter-domain horizontal gene transfers of Pentatom

Cinderella Biodiversity: Three Decades of Monitoring Reveal Earlier Emergence and Increasing Abundance in Undervalued and Sparsely Recorded Flying Insects and Ballooning Spiders.

Arthropod declines have been reported widely, and yet the spotlight has fallen on relatively large, colourful insects, rarely considering the abundant, small-sized, yet charismatic flying insects and ballooning spiders we class as neglected and undervalued 'Cinderella species'. This diverse set of arthropods contributes important ecosystem services, such as decomposition, pollination, pest regulation and nutrient cycling. We sampled a 30 year long archived arthropod collection, preserved in ethanol from the daily 12.2 m suction-trap catches at four sites in the UK, to provide new data on more

Expression Analysis in a Dispersal-Fecundity Polyphenism Identifies Growth Regulators and Effectors.

Polyphenism allows organisms to respond to varying environmental conditions by adopting alternative collections of morphological traits, often leading to different reproductive strategies. In many insects, polyphenism affecting the development of flight trades dispersal ability for increased fecundity. The soapberry bug Jadera haematoloma (Hemiptera: Rhopalidae) exhibits wing polyphenism in response to juvenile nutritional resources and cohort density. Development of full-length wings and flight-capable thoracic muscles occurs more frequently in cohorts raised under low food density conditions

Using organic-certified rather than synthetic pesticides may not be safer for biological control agents: selectivity and side effects of 14 pesticides on the predator Orius laevigatus.

The generalist predator Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is a key natural enemy of various arthropods in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Releases of this predator are frequently carried out, and it is included in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs of several crops. The accurate assessment of the compatibility of various pesticides with predator activity is key for the success of this strategy. We assessed acute and sublethal toxicity of 14 pesticides on O. laevigatus adults under laboratory conditions. Pesticides commonly used in either conventional or organi

Semi-field experiments reveal contrasted predation and movement patterns of aquatic macroinvertebrate predators of Anopheles gambiae larvae.

BACKGROUND: Members of the Anopheles gambiae complex are major malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa. Their larval stages inhabit a variety of aquatic habitats in which, under natural circumstances, they are preyed upon by different taxa of aquatic macroinvertebrate predators. Understanding the potential impact of predators on malaria vector larval population dynamics is important for enabling integrated local mosquito control programmes with a stronger emphasis on biocontrol approaches. This study experimentally evaluated the predation efficacy and foraging strategy of three common aquatic ma

Estimating gene flow between refuges and crops: a case study of the biological control of Eriosoma lanigerum by Aphelinus mali in apple orchards.

Parasitoid disturbance populations in agroecosystems can be maintained through the provision of habitat refuges with host resources. However, specialized herbivores that feed on different host plants have been shown to form host-specialized races. Parasitoids may subsequently specialize on these herbivore host races and therefore prefer parasitizing insects from the refuge, avoiding foraging on the crop. Evidence is therefore required that parasitoids are able to move between the refuge and the crop and that the refuge is a source of parasitoids, without being an important source of herbivore
