[A short history of hearing research. II. Renaissance].

The history of basic research on the function of the hearing organ is revisited. The present, second part of the review covers the period between the renaissance of anatomical research in the 16th century and the beginning of modern hearing research at the end of the 19th century. Andreas Vesalius gave the two ossicles malleus and incus their names. His scholar Philippus Ingrassia found 1546 the third ossicle, the stapes. The cochlea was discovered 1552 by Bartholomeus Eustachius and denoted as cochlea 1561 by Gabriel Falloppio. Thomas Willis speculated 1672 that different "tones" (species aud

Ossicular abnormalities in Down's syndrome.

Down's syndrome has been associated with hearing loss and otitis media. Because of difficulty in examination, however, there have been few detailed otologic studies on this population. An understanding of the nature and frequency of ear disease in Down's syndrome is important, since it is common and occurs in more than one in every 600 live births. To define the aural manifestation of Down's syndrome, complete otologic and audiometric examination was performed on 107 consecutive patients. This included micropneumatic otoscopy, pure-tone and speech audiometry, impedance tympanometry, and, in so

Convergence of Plasmid-Mediated tmexCD-toprJ With Critical Resistance Genes Fuels Spread of Multidrug Resistant Bacteria.

The plasmid-mediated tigecycline resistance cluster tmexCD-toprJ is an emerging clinical threat whose convergence with carbapenemase and colistin resistance determinants may compromise multiple last-line therapies. We analyzed 1227 tmexCD-toprJ-positive genomes from 42 countries and 16 genera, including 1189 public genomes and 38 newly sequenced clinical isolates. The increase was most pronounced in China, where tmexCD-toprJ prevalence rose from 0.282% before 2011 to 1.504% after 2020, and approximately half of post-2015 Chinese isolates were classified as dual-positive, co-harboring blaNDM, b

Various Surgical Techniques for Cochlear Implantation in an Ossified Cochlea: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear ossification, otherwise known as labyrinthitis ossificans, is not an uncommon encounter in candidates for cochlear implantation (CI) that may necessitate alternative surgical approaches due to the insertion difficulties. We aimed to review the literature for the documented approaches for CI in cases with cochlear ossification. METHODS: This review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines on articles that described their surgical approach for CI in cases with cochlear ossification. Using a 3D Radiological Planning Software to Predict the Intraoperative Surgical View.

INTRODUCTION: A 3D radiological planning software for general otology has been developed to assist preoperative planning by providing anatomical measurements based on CT or MRI scans in cochlear implant candidates. This study aimed to investigate its usability for predicting the required posterior tympanotomy (PT) opening length to ensure visualization of the round window (RW). MATERIAL AND METHODS: CT scans were performed on 30 petrous bone specimens. Correlations were analyzed between software-calculated distances of the ideal trajectory to critical inner ear structures and the intraoperati

Audiometric Variability of the Carhart Effect in Middle Ear Diseases - Pretreatment Analysis.

ObjectiveThe assessment of bone conduction thresholds in patients with conductive hearing loss is not a full measure of the function of the inner ear due to the weakening of the influence of middle ear components on bone conduction. This relationship has been called the 'Carhart effect'.MethodsThe retrospective analysis covered 977 patients diagnosed and treated for middle ear diseases from 2010 to 2020. The Carhart effect was considered to be an increase in the bone conduction threshold by a minimum of 10 dB relative to adjacent frequencies. The study was performed with the aim of assessing t

A morphological analysis of carnivoran ossicles from Rancho La Brea.

The morphology of the mammalian middle ear-including the size, shape, and stiffness of individual ossicles-controls their vibrational response to sound and, is closely related to an animal's auditory capabilities. While the relationship between middle ear morphology and hearing frequency has been explored in living carnivorans, the size and shape of ossicles in fossil carnivorans have been sparsely documented. In this study, we present the first morphological data on four iconic carnivoran taxa from the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits: Smilodon fatalis, Panthera atrox, Canis dirus, and Arctodus simus.

Conductive Hearing Loss with Age-A Histologic and Audiometric Evaluation.

A retrospective analysis to quantify age-related changes of the incudo-malleolar joint (IMJ) and incudo-stapedial joint (ISJ), and to analyse changes in the air-bone gap (ABG) with age, was performed. Defined histologic parameters of 153 IMJ and 106 ISJ from subjects aged from birth to 70 years were correlated to age. Additionally, audiograms of 1760 ears of 974 other subjects aged 20 to 80 years were retrospectively analysed and the ABG was correlated to age. The joint space (age group from 0 to 10 compared to 61 to 70 years) became significantly wider with age (IMJ: from a mean of 44 µm to 1
