Anxiety in the family: a genetically informed analysis of transactional associations between mother, father and child anxiety symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety in parents is associated with anxiety in offspring, although little is known about the mechanisms underpinning these intergenerational associations. We conducted the first genetically sensitive study to simultaneously examine the effects of mother, father and child anxiety symptoms on each other over time. METHOD: Adoptive parent and child symptoms were measured at child ages 6, 7 and 8 years from 305 families involved in the Early Growth and Development Study, using a prospective adoption design. Children were adopted at birth to nonrelatives, and composite data on intern

Factors contributing to delayed diagnosis of cancer among Aboriginal people in Australia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Delayed presentation of symptomatic cancer is associated with poorer survival. Aboriginal patients with cancer have higher rates of distant metastases at diagnosis compared with non-Aboriginal Australians. This paper examined factors contributing to delayed diagnosis of cancer among Aboriginal Australians from patient and service providers' perspectives. METHODS: In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted in two stages (2006-2007 and 2011). Inductive thematic analysis was assisted by use of NVivo looking around delays in presentation, diagnosis and referral for canc

An F1-extended one-generation reproductive toxicity study in Crl:CD(SD) rats with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid.

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was assessed for systemic toxicity, reproductive toxicity, developmental neurotoxicity (DNT), developmental immunotoxicity (DIT), and endocrine toxicity. CD rats (27/sex/dose) were exposed to 0, 100, 300, 600 (female), or 800 (male) ppm 2,4-D in diet. Nonlinear toxicokinetic behavior was shown at high doses; the renal clearance saturation threshold for 2,4-D was exceeded markedly in females and slightly exceeded in males. Exposure was 4 weeks premating, 7 weeks postmating for P1 males and through lactation for P1 females. F1 offspring were examined for su

Genetic Structure of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii and viciae Populations Found in Two Oregon Soils under Different Plant Communities.

An investigation was carried out to determine the genetic structure in soil populations of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii and viciae at each of two Oregon sites (A and C) that were 1 km apart. Although the soils were similar, the plant communities were quite different because grazing by domestic animals had been allowed (site A) or prevented (site C). Analysis of allelic variation at 13 enzyme-encoding loci by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis delineated 202 chromosomal types (ETs) among a total of 456 isolates representing two populations of R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii (AT and CT) and

"It's about fulfilling my role": a qualitative study of dignity and life narrative meanings for older adults in palliative care within a Confucian-family context.

BACKGROUND: Dignity is a cornerstone of quality palliative care. While Dignity Therapy has been developed to support dignity, its cultural foundations are rooted in Western individualistic values. In Confucian-family contexts, where interdependence and familial roles are paramount, the conceptualization of dignity and the relevance of life narratives may differ significantly. Understanding these culturally embedded perspectives is crucial for developing person-centered care that is truly resonant. AIM: This study aimed to explore how older adults in a Confucian-family context perceive and arti

Establishing research and translation priorities and care pathways for families where a parent lives with mental ill health.

Service users and carers have recently had input into establishing mental health research and translation priorities in Australia. This study extends that work to include the voice of those with lived experience of parental mental ill health. Although, parental mental ill health is a global public health issue there is a substantial gap in knowing the research and implementation priorities for parents and their families. This study sought to establish the priorities that families with lived experience of parental mental ill health have for support and intervention, along with what social facto

The Association Between Parental Food Intake and Loss of Control Eating in Children: An Experimental Test Meal Study.

OBJECTIVE: Loss of control (LOC) eating in children is prospectively associated with excessive weight gain and elevated psychopathology. Parental LOC eating and negative mood in children have been linked to child LOC eating; however, objective evidence on parent-child concordance in energy intake and sense of LOC over eating, particularly in relation to mood, remains limited. METHOD: An experimental ad libitum dinner meal was completed by 60 children with (LOC+) and 60 children without (LOC-) interview-based LOC eating (8-13 years, 57% female), individually matched on sociodemographic variabl

Disproportionate Cardiovascular Risk in Women with Type 2 Diabetes: A Narrative Review of Diet, Metabolic Phenotypes, and Gene-Diet-Epigenetic Interactions Across the Life Course.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although women generally exhibit a more favorable cardiovascular risk profile than men in the general population, this protection is substantially reduced in the presence of diabetes, resulting in a disproportionately greater relative increase in CVD risk among women. Objective: This review aims to integrate the roles of metabolic phenotypes, dietary exposures, and genetic susceptibility in shaping cardiovascular risk in women with T2DM, with a f

Transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from raw milk and dairy farm environments under heavy metal stress.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of heavy metals on the resistance levels exhibited by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing and non-ESBL-producing Escherichia coli isolated from cattle farms and raw milk. The findings indicated that ESBL-producing E. coli strains exhibited significantly higher resistance to Cu, Zn, and Cd than non-ESBL-producing strains. Furthermore, ESBL-producing strains harbored various plasmid-mediated heavy metal resistance genes. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) results showed that ESBL-producing strains carried plasmids encoding 148 heavy metal

Place-based harms and hidden strengths: a qualitative study exploring facets of neighborhood disinvestment driving opioid overdose among black individuals.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant efforts to address the opioid overdose crisis, Black people who use drugs (PWUD) face unabating, disproportionate increases in opioid overdose death (OOD) rates. These inequities persist in treatment admissions, utilization of medication for opioid use disorder, and treatment retention. Research has linked neighborhood disinvestment - a process of urban decline driven by policy-related changes in neighborhood demand and desirability leading to decreased population, physical and economic erosion, and poorer quality of life for residents - to increased rates of OO

Pediatric Orthopaedic Engagement with Environmental Health: Surgeon Interviews Reveal Challenges and Opportunities Across the United States and Europe.

BACKGROUND: Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation and pollution, particularly those living in low-income areas. Although interest in reducing healthcare's environmental impact is growing, systemic top-down reforms often face substantial barriers that limit progress. By contrast, surgeon-led, bottom-up initiatives have been highly effective in improving patient outcomes and reducing surgical cost. This study evaluates the opportunities and challenges encountered by pediatric orthopaedic surgeons in implementing sustainable practices within their local

Mycobacterium vaccae ATCC 15483T administered to nulliparous C57BL/6N mice prior to mating protects their male offspring against the negative consequences of prenatal stress.

The prenatal period is a vulnerable phase for the offspring's development in utero and ex utero. Accordingly, negative environmental influences such as chronic maternal stress pose a major risk factor for the offspring to develop a variety of mental and physical disorders later in life. Many of these pathologies are accompanied by an over-reactive immune system and chronic low-grade inflammation, and prospective human and mechanistic animal studies strengthen the idea that an exaggerated immune (re)activity plays a causal role in their pathogenesis. In line with the latter, we have shown in mi

Perceptions and experiences of older adults in a youth community health volunteer-led health coaching program in Singapore: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: With an aging global population, there is a growing emphasis on community-based approaches to preventive health for older adults. While Community Health Volunteers have been found to be effective in empowering older adults to manage their chronic conditions, there is limited research on the role of Youth Community Health Volunteers (YCHVs) and little is known about how older adults perceive their role and effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explores older adults' experiences and perceptions of a YCHV-led health coaching program following community health screening in

Bisphenol F (BPF) exposure impairs sperm quality and offspring development in male zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol F (BPF), a substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), is widely used in consumer products, increasing the potential for environmental exposure. Our study investigated the reproductive effects of BPF on adult male zebrafish and explored its toxicological mechanisms, as well as its intergenerational effects. METHODS: Adult male zebrafish were exposed to BPF concentrations of 0, 50, 500, 2500, and 5000 nM for 21 days. We evaluated sperm cell quantity and quality, hormonal markers testosterone (T) and vitellogenin (VTG), gene expression profiles related to hormone synthesis, metaboli

What are the views of Quebec and Ontario citizens on the tiebreaker criteria for prioritizing access to adult critical care in the extreme context of a COVID-19 pandemic?

BACKGROUND: The prioritization protocols for accessing adult critical care in the extreme pandemic context contain tiebreaker criteria to facilitate decision-making in the allocation of resources between patients with a similar survival prognosis. Besides being controversial, little is known about the public acceptability of these tiebreakers. In order to better understand the public opinion, Quebec and Ontario's protocols were presented to the public in a democratic deliberation during the summer of 2022. OBJECTIVES: (1) To explore the perspectives of Quebec and Ontario citizens regarding ti

The barriers and enablers to accessing sexual health and sexual well-being services for midlife women (aged 40-65 years) in high-income countries: A mixed-methods systematic review.

Midlife, beginning at 40 years and extending to 65 years, a range that encompasses the late reproductive to late menopausal stages, is a unique time in women's lives, when hormonal and physical changes are often accompanied by psychological and social evolution. Access to sexual health and sexual well-being (SHSW) services, which include the prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections, contraception and the support of sexual function, pleasure and safety, is important for the health of midlife women, their relationships and community cohesion. The objective was to use the soci

A Molecular Phylogenetic Study of the Eye Fluke Philophthalmus lacrymosus (Trematoda: Philophthalmidae) Found in Larus dominicanus (Aves: Laridae) from Brazil.

PURPOSE: Species of the genus Philophthalmus are eye flukes with a complex taxonomy, which began to be improved with the help of molecular data only recently. However, most described species have never been placed into a phylogenetic context. In this study, eye flukes previously found on kelp gulls, Larus dominicanus, from Brazil and identified as Philophthalmus lacrymosus were subjected to molecular analysis. METHODS: For the molecular analyses, we analyzed parasites found in six infected gulls (one worm per bird) collected from different municipalities of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Shapes of subcortical structures in adolescents with and without familial history of substance use disorder.

It has been suggested that intergenerational transmission of risk for substance use disorder (SUD) manifests in the brain anatomy of substance naïve adolescents. While volume and shapes of subcortical structures (SSS) have been shown to be heritable, these structures, especially the pallidum, putamen, nucleus accumbens, and hippocampus, have also been associated with substance use disorders. However, it is not clear if those anatomical differences precede substance use or are the result of that use. Therefore, we examined if volume and SSS of adolescents with a family history (FH+) of SUD diff

Associations of postpartum mother-infant bonding with maternal childhood maltreatment and postpartum mental health: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: After delivery, some women experience impairment of their mother-infant bonding (MIB), which can lead to long-term disturbances of the mother-child relationship and the child's social-emotional development. Little is known about the association between early maternal bonding problems and mothers' own adverse childhood experiences, even though the hypothesis of the intergenerational transmission of caregiving indicates continuity in parenting quality across generations. Therefore, the current study aimed at examining the relationship between maternal childhood maltreatment and postp
