Andean Plants Essential Oils: A Scented Alternative to Synthetic Insecticides for the Control of Blowflies.

Blowflies are vectors of microorganisms and human pathogens, and their maggots cause myiasis in vertebrates and infest and spoil meat and fish products. Essential oils (EOs) from spices were proven to be a safer and more sustainable alternative to synthetic insecticides for the control of blowflies and are suitable for protecting food from such pests. However, some EOs are not acceptable for environmental or topical applications due to their strong, unpleasant odour. In this study, we measured the acute toxicity and the repellence of two EOs extracted from the Andean plants Aloysia citrodora P

Estimation of toxicity of chemical mixtures through modeling of chemical interactions.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), in collaboration with the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) Nutrition and Food Research Institute, is conducting studies to evaluate the role of chemical interactions in the expression of toxicity from low-level exposure to combinations of chemicals. The goal of this collaborative effort is to use a weight-of-evidence (WOE) approach to estimate joint toxicity of some simple chemical mixtures and to compare the estimations with test results from animal toxicity studies. The WOE approach uses individual chemical

Breath volatilome analysis reveals new gut microbiome-related metabolites that discriminate high versus low dietary fibre intake.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Gut bacteria produce a wide variety of metabolites that are playing important roles in human health. Dietary fibres (DF) are beneficial nutrients that have been shown to modulate key intestinal functions when fermented by gut bacteria. Since most bacteria-derived metabolites are volatile, their presence in exhaled breath allows to propose new non-invasive methods to study DF-microbiome interactions in humans. We aimed to identify potential novel biomarkers of gut microbiota activity released in exhaled breath following the consumption of DF at breakfast, upon untargeted anal

An Ecological Examination of Indica Versus Sativa and Primary Terpenes on the Subjective Effects of Smoked Cannabis: A Preliminary Investigation.

Background: The legal cannabis landscape has greatly outpaced scientific knowledge. Many popular cannabis claims, such as cultivar (colloquially referred to as strain) classification and terpene content producing different subjective effects, are unsubstantiated. This study examined, for the first time, whether cultivar classification (sativa/indica) and terpene content (caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene, pinene, and terpinolene) were associated with subjective cannabis effects (i.e., pain levels, low-arousal ["indica-like"] effects, high-arousal ["sativa-like"] effects, and negative effects).

Grass-like plants release general volatile cues attractive for gravid Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the ecology and behaviour of disease vectors, including the olfactory cues used to orient and select hosts and egg-laying sites, are essential for the development of novel, insecticide-free control tools. Selected graminoid plants have been shown to release volatile chemicals attracting malaria vectors; however, whether the attraction is selective to individual plants or more general across genera and families is still unclear. METHODS: To contribute to the current evidence, we implemented bioassays in two-port airflow olfactometers and in large field cages with four

Marginal quality water arbitrated essential oil contents in metal hoarded flower petals of scented roses.

Climate change and the consequent alteration in agricultural circumstances enhance the susceptibility of fresh water use particularly in water-scarce regions. Marginal quality water reuse is a common alternative practice but possible perils of metal accretion in plant parts are mostly ignored. The present research aimed to probe the impact of treated wastewater (TWW) and untreated wastewater (UTWW) on metal accumulation in flower petals and their influence on essential oil contents of fragrant Rosa species (R. Gruss-an-teplitz, R. bourboniana, R. centifolia, R. damascena) in a peri-urban area
