Topical repellents for malaria prevention.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-based interventions, such as long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), remain the backbone of malaria vector control. These interventions target mosquitoes that prefer to feed and rest indoors, but have limited capacity to prevent transmission that occurs outdoors or outside regular sleeping hours. In low-endemicity areas, malaria elimination will require that these control gaps are addressed, and complementary tools are found. The use of topical repellents may be particularly useful for populations who may not benefit from progra

Changes in contributions of different Anopheles vector species to malaria transmission in east and southern Africa from 2000 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission in Africa is facilitated by multiple species of Anopheles mosquitoes. These vectors have different behaviors and vectorial capacities and are affected differently by vector control interventions, such as insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying. This review aimed to assess changes in the contribution of different vector species to malaria transmission in east and southern Africa over 20 years of widespread insecticide-based vector control. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Global Health, and Web of Science online databases for articles published betwee

Prevalence and association of malaria with ABO blood group and hemoglobin level in individuals visiting Mekaneeyesus Primary Hospital, Estie District, northwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal mosquito-borne disease caused by protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium. ABO blood group antigens represent polymorphic traits inherited among individuals and populations. Differences in blood group antigen expression can increase or decrease host susceptibility to many infections. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of malaria and its possible association with ABO blood group and hemoglobin level among individuals attending Mekaneeyesus Primary Hospital, Estie District, northwestern Ethiopia. Sociodemographic variables and relevan

Identifying risk factors of anemia among women of reproductive age in Rwanda - a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the Rwanda demographic and health survey 2014/2015.

BACKGROUND: Anemia among Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) continues to be among the major public health problems in many developing countries, including Rwanda, where it increased in prevalence between the 2015 and 2010 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) reports. A thorough understanding of its risk factors is necessary to design better interventions. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted in Rwanda on a nationally representative sample to assess factors associated with anemia among WRA. Accordingly, this study was conducted to address such gap. METHODS: A

Cost and cost-effectiveness of ivermectin mass drug administration for malaria control in Kwale county, Kenya: a modelling analysis of a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major health burden in sub-Saharan Africa, where traditional vector control methods are hindered by insecticide resistance and evolving mosquito behaviour causing residual transmission. In the BOHEMIA cluster-randomised trial in Kenya, ivermectin mass drug administration (iMDA), delivered once a month for 3 months with approximately 64% population coverage, was shown to reduce malaria incidence by 26%. We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of iMDA as a supplementary vector control tool using data from the BOHEMIA trial in Kenya. METHODS: We did a cost-effecti

Fatal and non-fatal health outcomes of malaria among reproductive age women in Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa, from 1990 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is transmitted by the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Women of reproductive age (WRA) are a more vulnerable group to malaria, which increases the risk of severe anemia, maternal death, and unfavorable birth outcomes. However, only limited comprehensive studies are available in the Eastern Sub-Saharan African (ESSA) region. The Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) 2023 estimates were to assess the fatal and non-fatal health outcomes of malaria among WRA in ESSA region from 1990 to 2023. METHOD: The Cause of Death Ensemble Model (

Semi-field experiments and sibship analyses reveal larval habitat size preferences and skip oviposition behaviour in female Anopheles arabiensis.

BACKGROUND: Since the turn of the century, long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) have played a major role in malaria control. However, the effectiveness of these tools is declining due to the development of insecticide resistance and other factors, creating an urgent need for complementary strategies. Larval source management (LSM), through the application of biological larvicides or the autodissemination of larvicides by ovipositing female mosquitoes, offers alternative avenues to target malaria vectors. Predicting the effectiveness of such approache

Trends in inequality in maternal and child health and health care in Uganda: Analysis of the Uganda demographic and health surveys.

BACKGROUND: Uganda has made great strides in improving maternal and child health. However, little is known about how this improvement has been distributed across different socioeconomic categories, and how the health inequalities have changed over time. This study analyses data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) conducted in 2006, 2011, and 2016 in Uganda, to assess trends in inequality for a variety of mother and child health and health care indicators. METHODS: The indicators studied are acknowledged as critical for monitoring and evaluating maternal and child health status. These in

Molecular detection of Dirofilaria spp. and host blood-meal identification in the Simulium turgaicum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Aras River Basin, northwestern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are known as effective vectors of human and animal pathogens, worldwide. We have already indicated that some individuals in the Simulium turgaicum complex are annoying pests of humans and livestock in the Aras River Basin, Iran. However, there is no evidence of host preference and their possible vectorial role in the region. This study was conducted to capture the S. turgaicum (s.l.), to identify their host blood-meals, and to examine their potential involvement in the circulation of zoonotic microfilariae in the study areas. METHODS: Adult blackfl

Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasitaemia among indigenous Batwa and non-indigenous communities of Kanungu district, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The indigenous Batwa of southwestern Uganda are among the most highly impoverished populations in Uganda, yet there is negligible research on the prevalence of malaria in this population. Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasitaemia prevalence was estimated in an indigenous Batwa and a non-indigenous neighbouring population, and an exploration of modifiable risk factors was carried out to identify potential entry points for intervention. Additionally, evidence of zooprophylaxis was assessed, hypothesizing that livestock ownership may play a role in malaria risk. METHODS: Two cross-s

Transmission of malaria in relation to distribution and coverage of long-lasting insecticidal nets in central Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: The use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is an effective malaria control strategy. However, there are challenges to achieve high coverage, such as distribution sustainability, and coverage keep-up. This study assessed the effect of LLINs coverage and contextual factors on entomological indicators of malaria in rural Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: The study was carried out between July 2009 and May 2012 in three villages (Bozi, N'Dakonankro and Yoho) of central Côte d'Ivoire. In Bozi and Yoho, LLINs were distributed free of charge by the national malaria control programme in 2008

Prescription patterns and drug use among pregnant women with febrile Illnesses in Uganda: a survey in out-patient clinics.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a public health problem in Uganda; affecting mainly women and children. Effective treatment has been hampered by over-diagnosis and over-treatment with anti-malarial drugs among patients presenting with fever. In order to understand the effect of drug pressure on sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) resistance in pregnancy, a sample of pregnant women presenting with fever in out-patient clinics was studied. The main objective was to assess prescription patterns and drug use in pregnancy especially SP; and draw implications on the efficacy of SP for intermittent preventive trea

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness against malaria of three types of dual-active-ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) compared with pyrethroid-only LLINs in Tanzania: a four-arm, cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have successfully reduced malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, but their effectiveness is now partly compromised by widespread resistance to insecticides among vectors. We evaluated new classes of LLINs with two active ingredients with differing modes of action against resistant malaria vectors. METHODS: We did a four-arm, cluster-randomised trial in Misungwi, Tanzania. Clusters were villages, or groups of hamlets, with at least 119 households containing children aged 6 months to 14 years living in the cluster's core area. Constrained randomisation

Measures of Malaria Burden after Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net Distribution and Indoor Residual Spraying at Three Sites in Uganda: A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying of insecticide (IRS) are the primary vector control interventions used to prevent malaria in Africa. Although both interventions are effective in some settings, high-quality evidence is rarely available to evaluate their effectiveness following deployment by a national malaria control program. In Uganda, we measured changes in key malaria indicators following universal LLIN distribution in three sites, with the addition of IRS at one of these sites. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Comprehensive malaria surveillance was cond

Evidence of secondary anopheline vectors in sustaining malaria transmission in Kokrajhar District, Assam, Northeastern India.

BACKGROUND: In the northeastern region of India, perennial malaria transmission persists in certain hotspots in areas geographically adjacent to the international borders with Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, where both Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum coexist, particularly in remote, forested, and inaccessible areas. This northeastern landscape harbors a wide diversity of anopheline vector species; Anopheles minimus and Anopheles baimaii are the traditional primary vectors of malaria.
