Multiple auditory steady state response thresholds to bone conduction stimuli in adults with normal and elevated thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory steady state responses (ASSRs) to multiple air conduction (AC) stimuli modulated at ∼80 Hz have been shown to provide reasonable estimates of the behavioral audiogram. To distinguish the type of hearing loss (i.e., conductive, sensorineural, or mixed), bone conduction (BC) results are necessary. There are few BC-ASSR data, especially for individuals with hearing loss. The present studies aimed to (1) determine multiple ASSR thresholds to BC stimuli in adults with normal hearing, masker-simulated hearing loss, and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and (2) determine how well

The time course of cochlear gain reduction measured using a more efficient psychophysical technique.

In a previous study it was shown that an on-frequency precursor intended to activate the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) at the signal frequency reduces the gain estimated from growth-of-masking (GOM) functions. This is called the temporal effect (TE). In Expt. 1 a shorter method of measuring this change in gain is established. GOM functions were measured with an on- and off-frequency precursor presented before the masker and signal, and used to estimate Input/Output functions. The change in gain estimated in this way was very similar to that estimated from comparing two points measured wit

Using computerized games to teach face recognition skills to children with autism spectrum disorder: the Let's Face It! program.

BACKGROUND: An emerging body of evidence indicates that relative to typically developing children, children with autism are selectively impaired in their ability to recognize facial identity. A critical question is whether face recognition skills can be enhanced through a direct training intervention. METHODS: In a randomized clinical trial, children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder were pre-screened with a battery of subtests (the Let's Face It! Skills battery) examining face and object processing abilities. Participants who were significantly impaired in their face processing abiliti

Processing of broadband stimuli across A1 layers in young and aged rats.

Presbycusis can be considered a slow age-related peripheral and central deterioration of auditory function which manifests itself as deficits in speech comprehension, especially in noisy environments. The present study examined neural correlates of a simple broadband noise stimulus in primary auditory cortex (A1) of young and aged Fischer-Brown Norway (FBN) rats. Age-related changes in unit responses to broadband noise bursts and spontaneous activity were simultaneously recorded across A1 layers using a single shank, 16-channel electrode. Noise bursts were presented contralateral to the left A

Speech-in-noise intelligibility does not correlate with efferent olivocochlear reflex in humans with normal hearing.

CONCLUSION: According to the presented data, speech-in-noise intelligibility (SI) does not correlate with olivocochlear efferent activity - as measured by contralateral suppression (CS) of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) in humans with normal auditory threshold. OBJECTIVES: Literature data indicate a possible role of the medial olivocochlear efferents in speech intelligibility, especially in background noise. The objective of this study was to investigate this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SI was evaluated in three independent sessions by determining the ratio speech

Development and Evaluation of a Realistic Audio-Visual Multi-Talker Speech Comprehension Test.

Current speech comprehension assessments do not provide a reliable measure of listeners' real-life speech comprehension ability, as they fail to capture the complexity and dynamic nature of real-world communicative scenarios. To better align laboratory assessment with real-world listening demands, we developed a new speech comprehension test using audio-visual recordings of spontaneous conversations between two talkers. The conversations were combined with babble noise at three different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) to vary task difficulty (Quiet, 0dB, and -5dB). Speech comprehension was asse

The non-effect of language on the Listening in Spatialised Noise - Universal (LiSN-U) test: performance with Turkish speakers.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether the Listening in Spatialised Noise - Universal (LiSN-U) test, recorded and normed in Australia, is suitable for Turkish-speaking children and adults. DESIGN: Participants performed the LiSN-U test, which comprises speech sounds common to many languages. This test assesses the ability to identify speech sounds in spatialised and non-spatialised noise, and the ability to use spatial cues to segregate target sounds from competing sounds. STUDY SAMPLE: The study involved 76 children and 22 adults with normal hearing. RESULTS: Speech reception thr

Neural-WDRC: A Deep Learning Wide Dynamic Range Compression Method Combined With Controllable Noise Reduction for Hearing Aids.

Wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) and noise reduction both play important roles in hearing aids. WDRC provides level-dependent amplification so that the level of sound produced by the hearing aid falls between the hearing threshold and the highest comfortable level of the listener, while noise reduction reduces ambient noise with the goal of improving intelligibility and listening comfort and reducing effort. In most current hearing aids, noise reduction and WDRC are implemented sequentially, but this may lead to distortion of the amplitude modulation patterns of both the speech and the no

Single-ended prediction of listening effort using deep neural networks.

The effort required to listen to and understand noisy speech is an important factor in the evaluation of noise reduction schemes. This paper introduces a model for Listening Effort prediction from Acoustic Parameters (LEAP). The model is based on methods from automatic speech recognition, specifically on performance measures that quantify the degradation of phoneme posteriorgrams produced by a deep neural net: Noise or artifacts introduced by speech enhancement often result in a temporal smearing of phoneme representations, which is measured by comparison of phoneme vectors. This procedure doe

The development of a fast method for recording Schroeder-phase masking functions.

Schroeder-phase masking complexes have been used in many psychophysical experiments to examine the phase curvature of cochlear filtering at characteristic frequencies, and other aspects of cochlear nonlinearity. In a normal nonlinear cochlea, changing the "scalar factor" of the Schroeder-phase masker from -1 through 0 to +1 results in a marked difference in the measured masked thresholds, whereas this difference is reduced in ears with damaged outer hair cells. Despite the valuable information it may give, one disadvantage of the Schroeder-phase masking procedure is the length of the test - us

Mapping auditory nerve firing density using high-level compound action potentials and high-pass noise masking.

Future implementation of regenerative treatments for sensorineural hearing loss may be hindered by the lack of diagnostic tools that specify the target(s) within the cochlea and auditory nerve for delivery of therapeutic agents. Recent research has indicated that the amplitude of high-level compound action potentials (CAPs) is a good predictor of overall auditory nerve survival, but does not pinpoint the location of neural damage. A location-specific estimate of nerve pathology may be possible by using a masking paradigm and high-level CAPs to map auditory nerve firing density throughout the c

Dynamics of visual recognition revealed by fMRI.

In our daily lives, recognizing a familiar object is an effortless and seemingly instantaneous process. Our knowledge of how the brain accomplished this formidable task, however, is quite limited. The present study takes a holistic approach to examining the neural processes that underlie recognition memory. A unique paradigm, in which visual information about the identity of a person or word is slowly titrated to human observers during a functional imaging session, is employed to uncover the dynamics of the visual recognition in the brain. The results of study reveal multiple unique stages in

Diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops by low-frequency masking.

Low-frequency masking is a new method for the diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops. A short acoustic stimulus and a low-frequency masker tone are applied to the same ear in an adjustable phase relationship. We recorded phase-dependent masked thresholds from normal-hearing subjects, and patients with Ménière's disease and sensory hearing loss without vertigo. In normal hearing, there is a mean maximal difference in masking (modulation depth) of 28 dB between the phase delays of 0 degree and 270 degrees. In patients with sensory hearing loss without vertigo, modulation depth is reduced due to recr

Associations between physiological indicators of cochlear deafferentation and listening effort in military Veterans with normal audiograms.

Cochlear synaptopathy, a type of cochlear deafferentation that impacts the synapses between the inner hair cells and the afferent auditory nerve fibers, is predicted to result in speech perception in noise difficulty. However, this has been difficult to confirm due to mixed findings in human studies of the relationship between speech perception in noise and physiological indicators of deafferentation (auditory brainstem response [ABR] wave I amplitude, envelope following response [EFR] magnitude, and middle ear muscle reflex [MEMR] magnitude). One possible explanation for the mixed findings is

Remote self-report and speech-in-noise measures predict clinical audiometric thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Developments in smartphone technology and the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the feasibility and need for remote, but reliable hearing tests. Previous studies used remote testing but did not directly compare results in the same listeners with standard lab or clinic testing. This study investigated validity and reliability of remote, self-administered digits-in-noise (remote-DIN) compared with lab-based, supervised (lab-DIN) testing. Predictive validity was further examined in relation to a commonly used self-report, Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing (SSQ-12), and lab-bas

Behavioral measures of cochlear compression and temporal resolution as predictors of speech masking release in hearing-impaired listeners.

Hearing-impaired (HI) listeners often show less masking release (MR) than normal-hearing listeners when temporal fluctuations are imposed on a steady-state masker, even when accounting for overall audibility differences. This difference may be related to a loss of cochlear compression in HI listeners. Behavioral estimates of compression, using temporal masking curves (TMCs), were compared with MR for band-limited (500-4000 Hz) speech and pure tones in HI listeners and age-matched, noise-masked normal-hearing (NMNH) listeners. Compression and pure-tone MR estimates were made at 500, 1500, and 4

Effects of age and hearing impairment on the ability to benefit from temporal and spectral modulation.

OBJECTIVES: At poor signal-to-noise ratios, speech understanding may depend on the ability to combine speech fragments that are distributed across time and frequency. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of development and hearing impairment on this ability. DESIGN: Listeners in the present study included adults and children with normal hearing and with hearing impairment. The children with normal hearing included a younger group (aged 4.6-6.9 yr, N = 10) and an older group (aged 7.3-11.1 yr, N = 11). The adults with normal hearing were aged 19 to 27 yr (N = 10). The effect of gabapentin on gap detection and forward masking in young and old gerbils.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory temporal processing frequently appears more affected in old subjects than would be predicted by the degree of peripheral hearing loss, pointing to an age-dependent central processing deficit. In parallel, an age-dependent decline of inhibitory function has been demonstrated in the auditory pathway, suggesting a causal relationship between temporal processing and inhibition. Gabapentin has been specifically synthesized as a potential gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA) mimetic with the capability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Gabapentin treatment ameliorated tinnitus in a r
