Clinical evaluation of a bioresorbable membrane (polyglactin 910) in the treatment of Miller type II gingival recession.

Coverage of denuded roots has become one of the most challenging procedures in periodontal plastic surgery. The search for the appropriate root coverage technique has taken many different approaches. Various surgical options with predictable outcomes are available. In this clinical study, patients were treated using polyglactin 910 (Vicryl mesh) and a coronally positioned flap. Clinical parameters for 15 patients were recorded immediately prior to surgery and after a minimum of 6 months. Postoperatively, significant root coverage, reductions in probing depths, gains in clinical attachment leve

The treatment of a localized osseous sequestrum with porous bone mineral in combination with a collagen membrane and resorbable bone pins.

The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy should not be limited to the establishment and maintenance of periodontal health. The potential regeneration of the hard and soft periodontal tissues lost due to disease also should be considered. This case presentation evaluated a new surgical technique for the treatment of a variety of localized bone defects, utilizing porous bone mineral in combination with collagen membrane and resorbable bone pins.

Guided tissue regeneration in surgically-produced furcation defects. An experimental study in the beagle dog.

The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the potential for new attachment formation at various degree III furcation involvements in the beagle dog. 3 differently shaped furcation defects were prepared; one small and one large key-hole defect, and one furcation defect which was part of "circumferential" loss of attachment and bone. 15 beagle dogs were used in the experiments. The furcation defects were surgically created at mandibular premolars in the right and left side of the jaw. Test teeth were subsequently treated according to the GTR principle, while control teeth were treated without

Clinical evaluation of the use of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft with guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of molar furcation invasions.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) combined with a barrier material in the treatment of human molar furcation defects (experimental) as compared to the barrier technique alone (control). Fifteen pairs of Class II or III furcation invasion defects comprised the study group. Measurements with calibrated periodontal probes were made to determine soft tissue recession, probing depth, and attachment levels. Defects from each pair were randomly selected to be treated with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (e-PTFE) and

Periodontal considerations in preparation for fixed and removable prosthodontics.

This article has presented many of the newer concepts and techniques that have been developed to treat a problem that has been of major concern to the prosthodontist: the problem of favorable periodontal support and poor or deformed edentulous ridges. In the past, dentists were not aware, or did not believe, that it was possible to reconstruct ridge deformities, and they resorted to prosthetic solutions to solve the problems of tissue reconstruction, function, and aesthetics. New procedures and concepts permit us to extend the range of therapy and hope we are able to offer our patients. It is

Bone formation following implantation of bone biomaterials into extraction sites.

BACKGROUND: Adequate bone volume is imperative for the osseointegration of endosseous implants, but postextraction resorption and remodeling may challenge implant placement. The use of bone biomaterials has been advocated to fill extraction sites and to enhance primary implant stability during osseointegration. The objective of the case series was to evaluate bone formation histologically and biomechanically in extraction sites following implantation of three commercially available bone biomaterials to compare their ability to allow guided bone regeneration. METHODS: Thirty-six periodontally

Treatment of gingival recession using platelet concentrate with a bioabsorbable membrane and coronally advanced flap: a report of two cases.

The aim of this report is to present a new treatment strategy for gingival recession. The use of platelet concentrate gel in a collagen sponge carrier combined with a bioabsorbable membrane and coronally advanced flap procedure is demonstrated in two patients. In both patients, the recession defects treated were equal to or greater than 2 mm. Complete root coverage was achieved in both cases. The patients were satisfied with the esthetic result and appreciated the excellent soft tissue contour and texture. This technique requires further investigation.

Immediate implant placement on removal of the natural tooth: retrospective analysis of 1,081 implants.

Conventional implant therapy dictates a period of 1 to 2 years from the start of treatment to the completion of the restoration. In contrast, immediate implant placement has resulted in the initiation of prosthetic treatment in as little as 3 to 6 months with the additional benefit of reducing alveolar bone resorption, patient morbidity, and expense. This article reports on the criteria for immediate implant placement into an extraction socket, as well as a reliable technique and a retrospective analysis of 1,081 implants placed immediately into extraction sockets. Of the 1,081 implants placed

Immediate implants placed into infected sites: a clinical report.

Placement of immediate implants is a routine clinical procedure. However, certain clinical conditions, especially the presence of infected sites, are considered to be contraindications for the immediate implant. Based on clinical experience, it is proposed that if certain preoperative and postoperative steps are carefully followed and meticulous debridement of the alveolus is done during the surgical procedure, immediate implants can be successfully placed into chronically infected sites. The advantages of this procedure are discussed.

Guided tissue regeneration following treatment of recession-type defects in the monkey.

Recent studies have demonstrated extensive amounts of new attachment formation following reconstructive surgery based on the biological principle of guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of using a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) membrane in GTR-treatment of recession-type defects and to examine the interrelationship between the PTFE membrane and surrounding periodontal tissues. Full-thickness flaps were raised around 24 maxillary premolar and molar teeth in 6 monkeys. The buccal alveolar bone was surgically removed to a level correspon
