Design and Experimental Evaluation of a Hierarchical LoRaMESH-Based Sensor Network with Wi-Fi HaLow Backhaul for Smart Agriculture.

Large-scale smart agriculture requires reliable and energy-efficient wireless connectivity to support distributed environmental sensing across wide rural areas. However, existing low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies often face limitations in scalability, reliability, or infrastructure dependency when deployed in large agricultural fields. This study presents the design and experimental evaluation of a hierarchical sensor network architecture that integrates LoRaMESH for multi-hop sensing communication and Wi-Fi HaLow as a sub-GHz backhaul for data aggregation and cloud connectivity

Smart Chemical Sensors for Monitoring and Detection of Spoilage in Fermented and Non-Fermented Food Products.

Smart chemical sensors have emerged as promising tools for real-time monitoring of food spoilage in both fermented and non-fermented products. By detecting key spoilage indicators-including biogenic amines, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane, pH variations, and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs)-these systems enable rapid, on-site assessment of food quality, offering a viable alternative to conventional, time-consuming laboratory analyses. Recent advances encompass diverse sensing mechanisms, including chemiresistive platforms based on conducting polymers and MEMS (Microelectromechan

A hemispherical latitude-gradient sensor for closed-loop monitoring and management of scoliosis correction.

Conservative treatment of scoliosis relies on physiotherapy and bracing, yet both approaches lack tools for quantitative, real-time monitoring of corrective forces. Here, we introduce a hemispherical latitude-gradient (HS-LG) sensor as a previously unknown sensing paradigm for soft, curved-body interfaces, using scoliosis as a clinical exemplar. Leveraging a nonzero Gaussian curvature ([Formula: see text]) geometry, the device acts as a spatiotemporal mechanical filter, converting normal pressure into in-plane tensile forces to overcome shear and stress artifacts limiting conventional sensors.

Toward therapnostic integration as a new paradigm for precision management of interstitial cystitis driven by medical-engineering convergence.

Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) is a complex chronic inflammatory disease involving mucosal barrier defects, neurogenic inflammation, mast cell activation, and tissue remodeling. Current diagnosis lacks objective biomarkers, relying instead on symptom assessment and exclusion of confusable diseases. Cystoscopy is recommended for identifying Hunner lesions per ESSIC/AUA guidelines, and first-line intravesical GAG replacement therapies only achieve sustained response rates of 20-38% at 12 months. Medical-engineering integration and materials innovations propel IC management

Learning signs with NAO: humanoid robot as a tool for helping to learn Colombian Sign Language.

Sign languages are one of the main rehabilitation methods for dealing with hearing loss. Like any other language, the geographical location will influence on how signs are made. Particularly in Colombia, the hard of hearing population is lacking from education in the Colombian Sign Language, mainly due of the reduce number of interpreters in the educational sector. To help mitigate this problem, Machine Learning binded to data gloves or Computer Vision technologies have emerged to be the accessory of sign translation systems and educational tools, however, in Colombia the presence of this solu

Electromagnetic fields - do they pose a cardiovascular risk?

Mobile wireless communication technologies have now become an everyday part of our lives, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Monitoring the autonomous system under exposition to electromagnetic fields may play an important role in broading of our still limited knowledge on their effect on human body. Thus, we studied the interaction of the high frequency electromagnetic field (HF EMF) with living body and its effect on the autonomic control of heart rate using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) linear and nonlinear analyses in healthy volunteers. A group of young healthy probands (n=30, age mean: 24.2 ±

Occupational electromagnetic field exposure and sleep disturbances: The predominant role of high-frequency electric fields.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are ubiquitous and include low-frequency magnetic fields (LF-MF) from alternating currents, low-frequency electric fields (LF-EF) from wiring and equipment, and high-frequency electric fields (HF-EF) from wireless technologies and broadcast antennas. Bus drivers are exposed to an EMF mixture and report higher rates of sleep disorders than the general population. This study aimed to examine associations between sleep disturbances and cumulative occupational EMF exposure over 12 months, considering individual components and the mixture. EMF exposure estimates from t

Microfluidics in the eye: a review of glaucoma implants from an engineering perspective.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy in the eye, which is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and currently affects over 70 million individuals. Clinically, intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction is the only proven treatment to halt the progression of glaucoma. Microfluidic devices such as glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices are routinely used by ophthalmologists to manage elevated IOP, by creating an artificial pathway for the over-accumulated aqueous humor (AH) in a glaucomatous eye, when the natural pathways are severel

Ex vivo localization of wireless implantable microdevice using high-resolution 3D imaging techniques.

The CROSSBRAIN EU project aims to address the heterogeneous nature of brain pathologies by developing wireless implantable microbots (µBots, planned dimensions 100 × 100 × 100 μm3) for highly localized neuromodulation. These devices are designed to precisely modulate brain activity with minimal invasiveness, enabling targeted resolution of specific spatiotemporal events, capabilities not currently achieved by existing neuromodulation technologies. A crucial step involves visualizing and ensuring the optimal placement of the µBots in the brain tissue, to study their functionality after implanta

WULPUS PRO: Multi-mode Ultra-Low-Power Wearable Ultrasound and Array Imaging with CMUT Support.

Wearable ultrasound has emerged as a key technology for continuous monitoring of physiological processes such as muscle dynamics, bladder volume, and cardiovascular activity. Existing fully-wearable ultra-low-power platforms are limited to shallow, low-channel A-mode sensing, while large-channel count (>8) multi-mode systems are too large and power-hungry for true wearability. To bridge this gap, we present WULPUS PRO, a novel runtime-programmable wearable ultrasound acquisition platform with an ultra-compact size of 39 × 21 × 6mm and low weight (5 g) that integrates 30 V excitation, 16 time-m

Measuring autonomic influence on gastrointestinal contractility: development and preliminary validation of novel capsule-based indices.

The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a key feature of fasting gastrointestinal (GI) motility, but its disruption in neuropathic conditions remains poorly characterized. Wireless motility capsules (WMCs) offer a noninvasive means of collecting motility data, facilitating study of larger cohorts. We aimed to develop WMC-derived metrics to identify neuropathic dysmotility and its associations with autonomic nervous system (ANS) function. We analyzed WMC data from 98 controls and 71 people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PWH) in whom autonomic neuropathy (AN) and delayed small bowel
