A total of 1,177 lice of four species were collected from 124 kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) and 137 lice of the same four species from 60 Franklin's gulls (Larus pipixcan). The louse Saemundssonia lari (O Fabricius) (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) was the most numerous on both gull species, with infestation rates of 4.9 on kelp gulls and 1.8 on Franklin's gulls. The second most abundant louse was Quadraceps punctatus (Burmeister), with a high infestation rate but low prevalence on kelp gulls; those parameters were much lower among lice from Franklin's gulls. The composition and community struct

Sucking lice and ticks were collected from live-trapped eastern rufous mouse lemurs, Microcebus rufus Geoffroy, in and around the periphery of Ranomafana National Park, southeastern Madagascar, from 2007 to 2009. Samples of 53 sucking lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Anoplura) and 28 hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) were collected from 36 lemur captures representing 26 different host individuals. All of the lice were Lemurpediculus verruculosus (Ward) (6 males, 46 females, 1 third instar nymph). Only the holotype female was known previously for this louse and the host was stated to be a "mouse lemur."

The insect fauna of the nests of Pseudoseisura lophotes (Reichenbach, 1853) (Aves: Furnariidae) from Argentina was investigated. A total of 110 species (68 identified to species, 22 identified to genus, 20 identified to family) in 40 families of 10 orders of insects was found in these nests. Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) was found again in nests of P. lophotes, corroborating after 73 years the first observations made by Mazza in 1936. The occurrence of the insects in nests of P. lophotes is compared with the previously known insect fauna in nests of A. annumbi, Furnari

Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) causes a common contagious skin disease that affects many mammals. Here, the complete mitochondrial genome of a mite, S. scabiei var. nyctereutis, from Japanese wild raccoon dogs was analyzed. The 13,837bp circular genome contained 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. For the first time, two tRNAs (alanine and tyrosine), that were thought to be absent in scabies mites from other animals, were predicted to have short, non-cloverleaf structures by in silico annotation and detected by RT-PCR, sequencing, and northern analysis. The mito

The vector potential of the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae De Geer (Acari: Dermanyssidae), in relation to chicken erysipelas was investigated under experimental conditions. Chickens were inoculated intramuscularly with the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, and mites were allowed to feed on the inoculated chickens for 5 days. After 20 days of starvation, the mites were allowed to feed on healthy chickens to enable transmission of bacteria. Blood samples were collected from the birds and analysed for the presence of E. rhusiopathiae, and ELISA tests were performed for seropositivit

Some herbivores suppress plant defenses, which may be viewed as a result of the coevolutionary arms race between plants and herbivores. However, this ability is usually studied in a one-herbivore-one-plant system, which hampers comparative studies that could corroborate this hypothesis. Here, we extend this paradigm and ask whether the herbivorous spider-mite Tetranychus evansi, which suppresses the jasmonic-acid pathway in tomato plants, is also able to suppress defenses in other host plants at different phylogenetic distances from tomatoes. We test this using different plants from the Solana

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin of the face and the eyes. The aetiology of rosacea is not clearly established but increasing evidence suggests a potential role for bacteria in the induction of the condition. A role for Bacillus oleronius, originally isolated from within a Demodex folliculorum mite, in the aetiology of the condition has been suggested. The aim of the study was to determine whether a correlation existed between the level of sebum and the density of D. folliculorum in the skin of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea patients, and the reactivity of th

1. A large number of migratory bird species appear to be declining as the result of climate change, but whether resident bird species have or will be adversely affected by climate change is less clear. We focus on the South Hills crossbill (Loxia curvirostra complex), which is endemic to about 70 km(2) of Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta latifolia) forest in southern Idaho, USA. 2. Our results indicate that the South Hills crossbill has declined by over 60% between 2003 and 2008, and that decreasing adult survival drives this population decline. 3. We evaluated the relative suppor

Dispersal capacity plays a central role in the radiation of animals, facilitating the exploitation of habitats variously distributed in space or in time or both. Many living species are unable to leave a host, crawl around, and find a new host, so they must rely on external factors to be transmitted. Biotical factors may be important in passive transport and the process, by means of which an animal is passively transported by a selected carrier of different species, is known as "phoresy". Phoresy is a phenomenon in which one animal (the phoretic) seeks out and attaches to an animal of another

The two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) has developed resistance to various pesticides at different levels. While target-site resistance mechanisms are recognized, metabolic resistance plays a crucial role in this development. In this study, a carboxyl/choline esterase gene, TuCCE50, was found to be significantly overexpressed in all tested field populations of T. urticae that exhibited resistance to abamectin and profenofos. Notably, exposure to abamectin significantly upregulated the expression of the TuCCE50 gene, an effect that was also observed with pro

The authors of the present study received a number of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from different regions of Germany in 2018-2021. In most cases, the ticks were removed from pet dogs or cats. In one case, engorged and detached ticks were found in a house, and it was unclear how they had gained entrance. Morphological examination revealed that all the specimens (n = 18, larvae, nymphs, and adults) were hedgehog ticks, Ixodes hexagonus. Morphological identification for two larvae was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene amplification. These two larvae were also examined for tick-borne encephalitis virus R

Initial data on the prevalence of storage mites in dry-stored food products and estimates of the presence of mites in human stool in the city of Minia, Egypt are provided. In total, 847 samples were collected randomly from houses and retail stores between March 2017 and February 2018. In addition, 1,000 human stool samples were collected for the detection of the presence of mites. Mites were extracted from 285 of 840 (33.9%) samples, and mite contamination was found to be most prevalent in wheat flour (73.3%). In total, 11 mite species belonging to six families were identified, with the pest s

Three-host Ixodid ticks, obligate blood-feeding Acari Parasitiformes, spend the majority of their lives off of hosts. They rely on morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to address the compromise between water loss and obtaining oxygen sufficient to meet metabolic needs. Here, we characterize the patterns of ventilation of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, providing the first measurements for Ixodes, and furthering understanding of the physiology of a medically important vector of tick-borne disease. Measuring CO2 output of I. scapularis nymphs through a flow-through r

The black legged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is a vector of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease and several other illnesses, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and tick-borne encephalitis. Although high-quality genome annotations are available for I. scapularis, functional understanding of I. scapularis genes is limited. To address this, we developed a platform for genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 knockout screening in I. scapularis cells. To evaluate the platform, we performed a screen to identify genes associated with cellular fitness, and screens for resistance to treatment with copper chloride, An

Serum samples were collected from 582 horses from 40 stud farms in the State of São Paulo and tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestations were evaluated on them. Serum samples were subjected to the complement fixation test (CFT) and a competitive inhibition ELISA (cELISA) for Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. Logistic regression analyses were performed to construct multivariate models that could explain the dependent variable (horses positive for B. caballi or T. equi) as a function of the independent variables (presence or abundance of each one of the tick species found on the farms). A higher over

Hard-bodied ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) pose a major public health threat, transmitting multiple pathogens among humans and wildlife worldwide. Research has investigated how anthropogenic land use change impacts tick density and infection prevalence in temperate forests, including the effects of active forest management practices like prescribed burning, invasive vegetation removal and timber harvesting. However, studies' results are inconsistent and seemingly context-dependent, making it difficult for land managers, landowners and policy makers to identify whether management addresses the public

Borrelia mayonii is a recently discovered bacterial spirochete that causes Lyme disease and is transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae). To date, B. mayonii has been isolated from two vertebrate host species in Minnesota: field-caught white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus Rafinesque; Rodentia: Cricetidae) and American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus Erxleben). Here, we describe the first detection of B. mayonii in field-caught eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus L. (Rodentia: Cricetidae)) from northern Wisconsin. During our study, we captured 530 uniqu

Freshly blood-fed adult females of the chicken mite Dermanyssus gallinae DeGeer (Acari: Dermanysidae) were food-deprived during 1, 2-3, 8-10, 14-16 and 22-23 days. These mites were tested in groups of 10 to determine their sensitivity to a heat cue delivered for a 60 s period under controlled laboratory conditions (24 degrees C, simulated dark conditions of 2 lx). Immobile mites were videotaped and start of activation (for individual mites) and percentage of mites activated in the 60 s period were related to temperature changes. Mites were activated with temperature gradients as low as 0.003-0

The phylogenetic relationships of all seven known species of Cecidophyopsis mites (Acari: Eriophyidae) with Ribes hosts have been inferred from ribosomal DNA sequences. This analysis found groups of closely related mites. The five gall-forming species, four of which are monophagous and one which has two hosts, were found in two groups. Another group consisted of the two non gall-forming species, one of which has two hosts, while the other is monophagous. The molecular phylogeny of their known Ribes host plants was calculated using the equivalent ribosomal regions as the mites. The structure of
