The present study was conducted to evaluate the status of the parasite fauna in Acipenser persicus at different development stages, in order to find prevention protocols for parasitic diseases in this valuable species. For this purpose, sampling from each sex breeder, 10 egg samples, 5-day-old larvae (n = 20), 20-day-old larvae (n = 80) and fingerling of A. persicus (n = 60) released in earthen ponds were done. After the bioassay and preparing wet mount from the internal and external organs, identification was done according to the keys. According to the results, no fauna parasites were isolat

Total protein variation (up to ninety-five different positions) was revealed by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) in 18 isolates from populations of M. arenaria (6 isolates), M. incognita (10), M. javanica (1) plus an unclassified isolate in a previously reported study. Isolates of M. arenaria, M. javanica, Meloidogyne sp., and M. incognita formed two separate groups defined on the basis of two sets of protein positions that could be considered as diagnostic characters, but we could not identify these proteins by MALDI-TOF. To identify these marker positions, nano-liquid chromatography as

The communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the fi

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown elevated serum levels of the cytokines IL-4 and sCD23 in atopic patients and parasitic disease. Gastroallergic anisakiasis is an acute parasitic disease, accompanied by IgE-mediated clinical symptoms and an important increase of specific and total IgE.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with acute urticaria/angioedema due to parasitism by Anisakis simplex after intake of raw or undercooked fish were selected, and serum samples were taken in the emergency room within 24 h (day 0; n=16), after 1 month (n=16), and after 6 months (n=10). Serum samples were studied f

Acute urticaria and angio-oedema are common in primary care and in the emergency unit. Food allergy is one possible cause. We describe gastric anisakiasis, in which symptoms are often not obviously related to eating raw fish. A study was made of patients presenting at the emergency department who had allergic symptoms such as urticaria or angio-oedema and had recently eaten raw or undercooked fish. They were divided into two groups. Patients in group A (n = 13) also had abdominal symptoms and were diagnosed as having gastric anisakiasis by fibre-optic gastroscopy where third-stage larvae of An

Anisakidosis (previously known as anisakiasis) is a disease caused by the accidental ingestion of larval nematodes (Anisakis and sometimes Pseudoterranova) in raw fish. Two groups of patients are studied: 5 clinical cases and 20 serological diagnoses. 55 French cases are already published. Most of them complained of acute symptoms, which occurred within 12 h of eating the seafood meal--epigastric pain, occlusion, diffuse abdominal pain, and appendicitis. Larvae were attached to the gastric mucosa (25 cases), including an inflammatory response (erythema, oedema ulceration). Diagnosis of anisaki

The scientific understanding of cetacean pathology has advanced significantly in recent decades. However, data concerning the health status of members of the family Kogiidae remains scarce. This study presents a comprehensive pathological assessment and determination of causes of death in 45 stranded kogiids, comprising 35 Kogia breviceps and 10 K. sima, along the coasts of the Canary Islands between 1999 and 2018. Causes of death (CD) were classified as natural (30/45; 66.6%) or anthropogenic (11/45; 24.4%), while the cause remained undetermined in four cases (9%). Among natural causes, the m

Anisakiasis is a parasitic infection caused by ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood containing Anisakis larvae. Although gastric involvement is common, colonic anisakiasis is rare and may be asymptomatic, making diagnosis difficult without endoscopic evaluation. We report a case of asymptomatic colonic anisakiasis incidentally detected during surveillance colonoscopy in a 53-year-old man 2 years after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for a sessile serrated lesion. The patient had consumed raw squid the evening before colonoscopy but had no abdominal symptoms. Bowel preparation was per

BACKGROUND: Anisakis simplex is the only fishery-product associated parasite causing clinical allergic responses in humans so far. However, other anisakids, due to the presence of shared or own allergens, could also lead to allergic reactions after sensitization. The aim of this study was to determine if Pseudoterranova decipiens belonging to the family Anisakidae has allergenic activity and is able to induce sensitization after oral administration in a murine (BALB/c mice) model.
RESULTS: The ingestion of A. pegreffii proteins by BALB/c mice, which had been previously sensitized by intraperi

Anisakidosis is an important fish-borne disease caused by the larvae of anisakid nematodes, which affects humans and a range of other animals. The accurate identification of members of this nematode group is central to investigating the epidemiology of the parasites and in the surveillance and control of anisakidosis. It is now well known that morphological identification alone does not allow specific identification, particularly of larval stages. To better understand the epidemiology of anisakid nematodes in southern Australian fishes and the potential risks posed to human health, a survey of

This study assessed the anisakid nematode distribution pattern in the fish collected from coasts of Mediterranean Sea, Egypt, during the period September 2010-April 2011. Two hundred thirty out of 300 (76.7%) Dicentrarchus labrax (European seabass) marine fishes belonging to family Moronidae were dissected and found to be infected with larva three nematodes. The larvae had been studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. The present work represents the first record of the presence of the parasite in this fish in the Mediterranean Sea. The concentrations of some heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Fe,

BACKGROUND: Hidden allergens in foods can induce allergic reactions. Currently it is not possible to estimate the exact prevalence of these reactions but they are clearly a growing problem.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of the role of hidden allergens (their importance, the types of food involved, and the severity of reactions) in allergic reactions in our geographical area.
METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out in an adult population. Over a five year period, a total of 530 food reactions were reviewed.
RESULTS: One hundred nineteen reactions (22.

BACKGROUND: Anisakis simplex can cause allergic reactions in sensitized patients. Some of these reactions are related to acute parasitism, as is shown in gastroallergic anisakiasis (anisakiasis with digestive and predominantly allergic symptoms). At present, a nonseafood diet is recommended for all patients with any kind of A. simplex allergy. We wished to confirm the clinical suspicion that patients with allergic symptoms after ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood who are sensitized to A. simplex, and diagnosed with gastroallergic anisakiasis, can tolerate the ingestion of seafood when the

Component-resolved diagnosis (CRD) using microarray technology has recently been introduced with the aim to improve diagnosis of allergy. The aim of this study was to compare performance of this allergen microarray to those of an established extract-based skin prick testing (SPT).45 patients with allergic rhinitis were studied (16 children and 29 adults). SPT to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae and Blomia tropicalis extracts and allergen microarray ImmunoCAP ISAC were carried out for all patients. Forty out of 45 patients demonstrated positive SPT to all mite extracts t

This study investigated the binding properties of two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs US1 and US2) raised in (CBA/n x BALB/c)F1 (NBF1) Btk(xid) male mice. Both mAbs show unusual specificity for phosphorylcholine (PC)-containing TSL4 antigens of Trichinella. Specifically, and in contrast to mAbs raised in normal mice, US1 and US2 mAbs do not bind to artificial PC-protein conjugates and are not inhibited by either free PC or NPPC, although US2 was partially inhibited by NPPC at high concentration (10(-2) M). However, both mAbs completely abrogate the binding to Trichinella antigens of other anti-PC

Fish and aquatic-derived zoonotic diseases have caused considerable problems in the aquaculture industry and fishery worldwide. In particular, zoonotic diseases can pose widespread threats to humans. With the world's growing population and potential global trade of aquaculture and fish, the risk of environmental contamination and development of fish and aquatic-derived zoonoses in humans are increasing. The important causes of zoonoses include bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi. The zoonotic bacterial agents are divided into two main groups: Gram-positive (Mycobacteriaceae, Streptococcace

Anisakidosis is a parasitic zoonotic disease which can cause gastroallergic reactions in humans. In 2010, the European Food Safety Agency estimated that approximately 20,000 cases of anisakiasis had been reported across the world, with Spain having the highest number of infections in Europe. The blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou, Risso, 1827) is one of the most widely fished species worldwide and represents around 25% of the white fish eaten in Spain. The Spanish Food Safety Authority requires obligatory evisceration of certain fish species before commercialization, but not for blue whiti
