Effects of residential acaricide treatments on patterns of pathogen coinfection in blacklegged ticks.

Medically important ixodid ticks often carry multiple pathogens, with individual ticks frequently coinfected and capable of transmitting multiple infections to hosts, including humans. Acquisition of multiple zoonotic pathogens by immature blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) is facilitated when they feed on small mammals, which are the most competent reservoir hosts for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (which causes anaplasmosis in humans), Babesia microti (babesiosis) and Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease). Here, we used data from a large-scale, long-term experiment to ask whether patterns of sin

Prevalence and Diversity of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Nymphal Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in Eastern National Parks.

Tick-borne pathogens transmitted by Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae), also known as the deer tick or blacklegged tick, are increasing in incidence and geographic distribution in the United States. We examined the risk of tick-borne disease exposure in 9 national parks across six Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States and the District of Columbia in 2014 and 2015. To assess the recreational risk to park visitors, we sampled for ticks along frequently used trails and calculated the density of I. scapularis nymphs (DON) and the density of infected nymphs (DIN). We determined the nymphal infe

A One Health Zoonotic Vector Borne Infectious Disease Family Outbreak Investigation.

This study reinforces the value of a One Health approach to infectious disease outbreak investigations. After the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms in their son, our investigation focused on a family composed of a mother, father, two daughters, the son, two dogs, and a rabbit, all with exposures to vectors (fleas and ticks), rescued dogs, and other animals. Between 2020 and 2022, all family members experienced illnesses that included neurological symptoms. Prolonged menorrhagia (130d) in the youngest daughter ultimately resolved following antibiotic administration. One dog was diagnosed with

Lactate Dehydrogenase as a Potential Therapeutic Drug Target to Control Babesia bigemina.

Babesia bigemina is a tick-borne apicomplexan hemoprotozoan responsible for bovine babesiosis. The current drugs used for bovine babesiosis treatment have several drawbacks, including toxicity, the lack of effectiveness to clear the parasite, and potential to develop resistance. Identifying compounds that target essential and unique parasite metabolic pathways is a rational approach toward finding alternative drug treatments. Based on the genome sequence and transcriptomics analysis, it can be inferred that anaerobic glycolysis is the dominant adenosine triphosphate (ATP) supply for Babesia, a

Molecular investigation of tick-borne pathogens in ticks removed from tick-bitten humans in the southwestern region of the Republic of Korea.

In this study, we investigated the presence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks removed from tick-bitten humans in the southwestern provinces of the Republic of Korea (ROK). We identified 33 ticks from three tick species, namely Amblyomma testudinarium (60.6%), Haemaphysalis longicornis (27.3%), and Ixodes nipponensis (12.1%) in order of occurrence via morphology and 16S rDNA-targeting polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Tick-borne pathogens were detected in 16 ticks using pathogen-specific PCR. From the results, 12 ticks (36.4%) tested positive for spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia: Rickettsia m

Cross-species therapeutics in Plasmodium and Babesia: erythrocyte invasion and conserved drug targets.

The phylum Apicomplexa encompasses a diverse group of protozoan parasites of profound medical and veterinary importance, among which the genera Plasmodium and Babesia stand out because of their shared pathological niche within host erythrocytes. While Plasmodium spp., transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes, are the causative agents of human and zoonotic malaria, Babesia spp., transmitted by ixodid ticks, cause babesiosis, a burgeoning zoonosis and a significant cause of economic loss in the livestock industry. Globally, babesiosis is an emerging threat, with Babesia microti being the primary cau

Golden jackals (Canis aureus) as hosts for ticks and tick-borne pathogens in Serbia.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium-sized canid species native to Europe. This species is characterized by rapid large-scale expansion. A similar trend is also observed in Serbia, where the species is now distributed in more than a half of the territory. Although jackals prefer habitats in human-dominated landscapes, these animals have not been studied well enough from an eco-epidemiological point of view, and little is known about their potential for carrying zoonotic pathogens. In a study conducted during a three-year period (01/2010-02/2013), a total of 216 hunted or road-killed go

Dual infection with Ehrlichia chaffeensis and a spotted fever group rickettsia: a case report.

Well-documented cases of simultaneous human infection with more than one tick-borne pathogen are rare. To our knowledge only two dual infections have been reported: simultaneous human infection with the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis and Borrelia burgdorferi and simultaneous human infection with B. burgdorferi and Babesia microti (1-2). Rocky Mountain spotted fever has long been known to be endemic in North Carolina; cases of human ehrlichial infection were recognized there soon after Ehrlichia chaffeensis was recognized as an important cause of tick-borne disease in the southeastern

Babesia odocoilei and zoonotic pathogens identified from Ixodes scapularis ticks in southern Ontario, Canada.

Cervid babesiosis, caused by the protozoan hemoparasite Babesia odocoilei and transmitted by the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis, is an emerging disease of Canadian cervids. This pathogen has not yet been described in humans. Data are lacking on the role of migratory birds in the adventitious spread of Ba. odocoilei-infected ticks, as well as on the infection status of I. scapularis in environments used by susceptible wildlife hosts. Following a high-mortality outbreak of cervid babesiosis at the Toronto Zoo [TZ], the present study was initiated to investigate Ba. odocoilei and other tick-b

Ticks, Human Babesiosis and Climate Change.

The effects of current and future global warming on the distribution and activity of the primary ixodid vectors of human babesiosis (caused by Babesia divergens, B. venatorum and B. microti) are discussed. There is clear evidence that the distributions of both Ixodes ricinus, the vector in Europe, and I. scapularis in North America have been impacted by the changing climate, with increasing temperatures resulting in the northwards expansion of tick populations and the occurrence of I. ricinus at higher altitudes. Ixodes persulcatus, which replaces I. ricinus in Eurasia and temperate Asia, is p

Beyond Hemolysis: Babesiosis-Associated Atraumatic Splenic Infarction in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Babesiosis is a protozoan infection transmitted by the tick, Ixodes scapularis. The disease presentation varies from asymptomatic to fatal illness. Usually, severe illness occurs in asplenic and immunocompromised patients. In rare cases, the complication of splenic injury, including infarcts and rupture, has been observed in young individuals. We present the case of a middle-aged woman who presented with abdominal pain and fatigue. She was found to be febrile and hypotensive with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and elevated transaminases. Imaging of the abdomen demonstrated multiple spleni

Pathogens of emerging tick-borne diseases, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., and Babesia spp., in ixodes ticks collected from rodents at four sites in Switzerland (Canton of Bern).

This study is part of a project that aimed to better understand the role of small mammals in the maintenance of the tick-borne encephalitis virus at four different sites in Switzerland. Here we focused on the detection of three intracellular pathogens, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., and Babesia spp., in field-derived ticks that detached from 79 small mammals. We analyzed 465 Ixodes ricinus larvae after their molt and 14 semiengorged I. trianguliceps that were feeding on rodents. No pathogen was detected in I. trianguliceps. In I. ricinus, the most frequently detected pathogen was

Canine piroplasmosis in Italy: epidemiological aspects in vertebrate and invertebrate hosts.

In Italy, canine piroplasmosis is believed to be widespread, but few data are available on its presence in most areas. In 2005 and 2006, vertebrate and invertebrate hosts were investigated in Central and Northern Regions of the Country. Microscopy on blood smears, molecular tools and serological tests were applied to 420 blood samples collected from dogs, in order to evaluate the presence of these protozoa and to identify possible risk factors. Moreover, ticks were analyzed by molecular techniques. Microscopy identified as positive 2.8% of the animals, all from Central Italy, and PCR detected

Emerging tick-borne diseases and blood safety: summary of a public workshop.

Tick-borne agents of disease continue to emerge and subsequently expand their geographic distribution. The threat to blood safety by tick-borne agents is ever increasing and requires constant surveillance concomitant with implementation of appropriate intervention methods. In April 2017, the Food and Drug Administration organized a public workshop on emerging tick-borne pathogens (excluding Babesia microti and Lyme disease) designed to provide updates on the current understanding of emerging tick-borne diseases, thereby allowing for extended discussions to determine if decisions regarding miti

Retrospective molecular analyses of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from patients admitted to the Centre for Tick-Borne Diseases in Central Europe, Hungary (1999-2021), in relation to clinical symptoms.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating the diversity of pathogens in human-biting ixodid ticks, in relation to their seasonality and associated clinical symptoms. METHODS: Hard ticks, collected from humans in the course of 23 years, were identified to the species level on a morphological basis. This was followed by DNA extraction and molecular analyses. The latter served to confirm tick species, and to detect important tick-borne pathogens, in particular rickettsiae, Anaplasmataceae, borreliae, and piroplasms. RESULTS: Among 502 ticks, six species were identified, with the predominanc
