Spatial modeling of the schistosomiasis mansoni in Minas Gerais State, Brazil using spatial regression.

Schistosomiasis is a transmissible parasitic disease caused by the etiologic agent Schistosoma mansoni, whose intermediate hosts are snails of the genus Biomphalaria. The main goal of this paper is to estimate the prevalence of schistosomiasis in Minas Gerais State in Brazil using spatial disease information derived from the state transportation network of roads and rivers. The spatial information was incorporated in two ways: by introducing new variables that carry spatial neighborhood information and by using spatial regression models. Climate, socioeconomic and environmental variables were

[Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis among schoolchildren of Nikki and Pèrèrè, two northeastern towns of Benin].

Infection with schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and the burden of disease associated with parasites is enormous. A study was performed to determine the transmission and prevalence of human schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis among school children of Nikki and Perere, two north eastern towns of Benin, bordering Republic of Nigeria. Parasitological investigations by urine filtration and Kato-Katz conducted on 1,344 school children indicated a mean prevalence of S. haematobium and S. mansoni 48.44% and 0%, respectively, in the

Mate choice, frequency dependence, and the maintenance of resistance to parasitism in a simultaneous hermaphrodite.

Biomphalaria glabrata are simultaneous hermaphroditic freshwater snails that act as intermediate hosts for the macroparasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni, a causative agent of schistosomiasis. Heritability and strain-specificity of both snail resistance and susceptibility to schistosome infection have been demonstrated, genetic variability for which is maintained, in part, through trade-offs between high fitness costs associated with infection and those associated with resistance. However, despite such a high cost of resistance and a low prevalence of infection in natural snail populations,

Specific inhibitors of mitogen-activated protein kinase and PI3-K pathways impair immune responses by hemocytes of trematode intermediate host snails.

To characterize molecular mechanisms regulating snail cellular immune responses, the contributions of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K) were examined in hemocytes of the trematode intermediate host snails Biomphalaria glabrata and Lymnaea stagnalis. Simultaneous measurement of phagocytosis/encapsulation and H2O2 production by hemocytes in the presence or absence of specific signal transduction inhibitors was used to assess the role of extracellular-signal regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2), p38, JNK and PI3-K. Hemocyte spreading was significant

The effect of simulating different intermediate host snail species on the link between water temperature and schistosomiasis risk.

INTRODUCTION: A number of studies have attempted to predict the effects of climate change on schistosomiasis risk. The importance of considering different species of intermediate host snails separately has never previously been explored. METHODS: An agent-based model of water temperature and Biomphalaria pfeifferi population dynamics and Schistosoma mansoni transmission was parameterised to two additional species of snail: B. glabrata and B. alexandrina. RESULTS: Simulated B. alexandrina populations had lower minimum and maximum temperatures for survival than B. pfeifferi populations (12.5-2

Thai koi-hoi snail dish and angiostrongyliasis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis: Effects of food flavoring and alcoholic drink on the third-stage larvae in infected snail meat.

Human infection with the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Parastrongylus cantonensis) in Thailand, especially in the northeastern region, is associated with the habit of eating koi-hoi, which contains raw snail meat. Infection results from the snails being carriers of the larval parasite. The present study was conducted to assess the effect of food flavorings in koi-hoi, alcohol, and exposure time of the two variable on the infective larvae of A. cantonensis. Infected Biomphalaria glabrata snails were used for koi-hoi preparation. Raw snail meat was mixed with koi-hoi flavoring and le

[Bladder schistosomiasis in school children; random study in the Ketu district, Ghana].

In 2 periods 1986/'87 and 1987/'88 1193 school children (5-19 years) from 13 randomly selected villages in the Ketu district, Ghana, were examined for Schistosoma haematobium (SH) in the urine. For the egg count the quantitative urine filtration technique was used and besides 3 indirect indicators of SH infection were evaluated. An arbitrary division was made into areas of high and low endemicity, showing SH prevalence rates of 54.3-23.0% and 2.3-16.0%, respectively. The condition of the "dams' in the different areas seemed to influence the infection rates. For all areas both prevalence and in

The role of essential fatty acids and prostaglandins in cercarial penetration (Schistosoma mansoni).

We used rat skin membranes to test the putative role of prostaglandins (PG) and essential fatty acids (EFA) in the penetration response of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. To examine the effects of EFA on cercarial penetration an EFA-deficient rat model was used. Dams were fed an EFA-deficient diet during lactation and the pups were weaned to this diet. Cercarial penetration of EFA-deficient rat skin membranes was not reduced from control levels until 12 wk on the diet. At this time a decrease of 64.3% was observed. This decrease remained constant up to 16 wk, after which the study was terminate

Re-assessing thermal response of schistosomiasis transmission risk: evidence for a higher thermal optimum than previously predicted.

The geographical range of schistosomiasis is affected by the ecology of schistosome parasites and their obligate host snails, including their response to temperature. Previous models predicted schistosomiasis' thermal optimum at 21.7 °C, which is not compatible with the temperature in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regions where schistosomiasis is hyperendemic. We performed an extensive literature search for empirical data on the effect of temperature on physiological and epidemiological parameters regulating the free-living stages of S. mansoni and S. haematobium and their obligate host snails, i.e

Comparative mitogenomics of freshwater snails of the genus Bulinus, obligatory vectors of Schistosoma haematobium, causative agent of human urogenital schistosomiasis.

Among the snail genera most responsible for vectoring human-infecting schistosomes, Bulinus, Biomphalaria, and Oncomelania, the former is in many respects the most important. Bulinid snails host the most common human blood fluke, Schistosoma haematobium, responsible for approximately two-thirds of the estimated 237 million cases of schistosomiasis. They also support transmission of schistosomes to millions of domestic and wild animals. Nonetheless, our basic knowledge of the 37 Bulinus species remains incomplete, especially with respect to genome information, even including mitogenome sequence
