Bioprospecting in potato fields in the Central Andean Highlands: screening of rhizobacteria for plant growth-promoting properties.

The Central Andean Highlands are the center of origin of the potato plant (Solanum tuberosum). Ages of mutualism between potato plants and soil bacteria in this region support the hypothesis that Andean soils harbor interesting plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study was to isolate rhizobacteria from Andean ecosystems, and to identify those with PGP properties. A total of 585 bacterial isolates were obtained from eight potato fields in the Andes and they were screened for suppression of Phytophthora infestans and Rhizoctonia solani. Antagonistic mechanisms were

The effects of local medicinal knowledge and hygiene on helminth infections in an Amazonian society.

Social science has long recognized the importance of understanding how interactions between culture and behavior shape disease patterns, especially in resource-poor areas where individuals draw on multiple medical treatments to maintain health. While global health programs aimed at controlling high infection rates of soil-transmitted helminthes among indigenous groups often acknowledge the value of local culture, little research has been able to examine this value. This study investigates the association between parental ethnomedical knowledge, parental biomedical knowledge, and household sani

Building resilient and response-ready influenza vaccination programs for pandemic preparedness: a comparative analysis from five middle-income countries.

UNLABELLED: Influenza vaccination programs are critical in reducing the morbidity and mortality from seasonal influenza and bolstering pandemic preparedness. However, there is a notable lack of information about the factors contributing to resilient and response-ready influenza vaccination programs in middle-income countries (MICs). This study set out to identify determinants of resilient and response-ready seasonal influenza vaccination programs in MICs. METHODS: This study used a collective case study design to analyze structural and programmatic elements of resiliency and response-readines

Genomic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi clinical isolates: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas disease, a poorly understood and clinically heterogeneous disease. Recent work has shown that parasites adapted to laboratory conditions exhibit genomic variation; however, little is known of the extent of genomic diversity among clinically isolated specimens. In this study, we aimed to describe genomic diversity within a set of clinically isolated strains. METHODS: We isolated 15 T cruzi specimens from three cross-sectional clinical studies of Chagas disease in Bolivia. We sequenced the genome of each strain, estimated parasite genetic lineage, gen

Global Scaling of a Surgical Infection Prevention Program to 5 Low-Resource Countries.

IMPORTANCE: Surgical site infections (SSI) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality from surgery, with higher rates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Clean Cut is a multimodal, adaptive quality improvement program that aims to reduce SSI by improving compliance with perioperative infection prevention standards. The program has been successfully implemented in Ethiopia at 12 hospitals with an associated 35% reduction in SSI. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether this surgical infection prevention program implemented in Ethiopia can be effectively scaled to a variety of geographical and

A specific, stable, and accessible LAMP assay targeting the HSP70 gene of Trypanosoma cruzi.

UNLABELLED: Diagnostic delays prevent most Chagas disease patients from receiving timely therapy during the acute phase when treatment is effective. Quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based diagnostic methods provide high sensitivity during this phase but require specialized equipment and complex protocols. More simple and cost-effective tools are urgently needed to expand early Chagas disease diagnosis in low-income endemic regions. Here, we present a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) that targets a highly conserved region in the HSP70 gene of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas

Identifying the social and environmental determinants of plague endemicity in Peru: insights from a case study in Ascope, La Libertad.

BACKGROUND: Plague remains a public health problem in specific areas located in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru. Its prevention and control encompasses adequate clinical management and timely laboratory diagnosis. However, understanding communities' interaction with its surrounding ecosystem as well as the differences between community members and institutional stakeholders regarding the root causes of plague might contribute to understand its endemicity. We aim at bridging the traditionally separate biological and social sciences by elucidating communities' risk perception and identifying k

Biomarkers and mortality in severe Chagas cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Chagas cardiomyopathy is a chronic sequela of infection by the parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. Advanced cardiomyopathy is associated with a high mortality rate, and clinical characteristics have been used to predict mortality risk. Though multiple biomarkers have been associated with Chagas cardiomyopathy, it is unknown how these are related to survival. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify biomarkers associated with mortality in individuals with severe Chagas cardiomyopathy in an urban Bolivian hospital. METHODS: The population included individuals with and without T. cruzi inf

Maternal infection with Trypanosoma cruzi and congenital Chagas disease induce a trend to a type 1 polarization of infant immune responses to vaccines.

BACKGROUND: We previously showed that newborns congenitally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi (M+B+) display a strong type 1 parasite-specific T cell immune response, whereas uninfected newborns from T. cruzi-infected mothers (M+B-) are prone to produce higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines than control neonates (M-B-). The purpose of the present study was to determine if such fetal/neonatal immunological environments could alter the response to standard vaccines administered in early life. METHODOLOGY: Infants (6-7 months old) living in Bolivia, an area highly endemic for T. cruzi infecti

Clinical signs that predict severe illness in children under age 2 months: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal illness, particularly in the first week of life, is a leading cause of death worldwide. Improving identification of young infants who require referral for severe illness is of major public-health importance. METHODS: Infants under 2 months of age brought with illness to health facilities in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ghana, India, Pakistan, and South Africa were recruited in two age-groups: 0-6 days and 7-59 days. A trained health worker recorded 31 symptoms and clinical signs. An expert paediatrician assessed each case independently for severe illness that required hospital ad

Thumb/hallux duplication and preaxial polydactyly type I.

It was recently shown that hand postaxial polydactyly differed from foot postaxial polydactyly. The aim of this work was to test whether thumb and hallux duplication also had different clinical and epidemiological characteristics, depending on limb involvement. We studied 920 newborn infants with first digit duplication, ascertained among 3,444,374 births by the Latin-American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECLAMC), from 1967 to 1995. Since biphalangeal thumb duplication or hallux duplication can occur in families with triphalangeal thumb or polysyndactylous propositi, these

Quantifying anti-trypanosomal treatment effects in chronic indeterminate Chagas disease: a secondary analysis of individual patient data from two proof-of-concept trials.

BACKGROUND: Determining parasitological cure in chronic Chagas disease is compromised by very low blood trypomastigote densities, which fluctuate close to or below the limit of quantitative PCR (qPCR) detection (approximately one parasite per 10 mL). We aimed to improve the statistical methodology used to analyse serial qPCR data to estimate treatment efficacy. METHODS: In this secondary analysis, we pooled clinical and laboratory data from two prospective randomised controlled trials (E1224 [NCT01489228] and BENDITA [NCT03378661]) in Bolivian adults (aged 18-50 years) with chronic indetermin

Intestinal parasitic infections and associated epidemiological drivers in two rural communities of the Bolivian Chaco.

INTRODUCTION: In 2013 a coproparasitological survey was carried out in two rural communities of the Bolivian Chaco to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) and to investigate on possible infection drivers through a questionnaire interview. METHODOLOGY: Faecal samples were examined by microscopy. Samples positive for Entamoeba histolytica complex and Blastocystis were molecularly examined to identify the species/subtypes involved. RESULTS: The overall infection rate was 86%, identical in both communities and mostly due to protozoa. Soil-transmitted helminths were

Growth references for Tsimane forager-horticulturalists of the Bolivian Amazon.

OBJECTIVES: Growth standards and references currently used to assess population and individual health are derived primarily from urban populations, including few individuals from indigenous or subsistence groups. Given environmental and genetic differences, growth may vary in these populations. Thus, there is a need to assess whether international standards are appropriate for all populations, and to produce population specific references if growth differs. Here we present and assess growth references for the Tsimane, an indigenous population of Bolivian forager-horticulturalists. METHODS: Mi
