Misophonia: A new mental disorder?

Misophonia, a phenomenon first described in the audiology literature, is characterized by intense emotional reactions (e.g., anger, rage, anxiety, disgust) in response to highly specific sounds, particularly sounds of human origin such as oral or nasal noises made by other people (e.g., chewing, sniffing, slurping, lip smacking). Misophonia is not listed in any of the contemporary psychiatric classification systems. Some investigators have argued that misophonia should be regarded as a new mental disorder, falling within the spectrum of obsessive-compulsive related disorders. Other researchers

Psychosocial Factors Mediating the Effect of the CHoBI7 Intervention on Handwashing With Soap: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Inadequate hand hygiene is estimated to result in nearly 300,000 deaths annually, with the majority of deaths being among children younger than 5 years. In an effort to promote handwashing with soap and water treatment behaviors among highly susceptible household members of cholera patients, we recently developed the Cholera-Hospital-Based Intervention-for-7-Days (CHoBI7); chobi means picture in Bengali. This 1-week handwashing with soap and water treatment intervention is delivered by a promoter in the hospital and the home to cholera patients and their household members. In our randomized co

Increased functional connectivity with puberty in the mentalising network involved in social emotion processing.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Puberty and Adolescence". There is increasing evidence that puberty plays an important role in the structural and functional brain development seen in adolescence, but little is known of the pubertal influence on changes in functional connectivity. We explored how pubertal indicators (salivary concentrations of testosterone, oestradiol and DHEA; pubertal stage; menarcheal status) relate to functional connectivity between components of a mentalising network identified to be engaged in social emotion processing by our prior work, using psychophysiological

Joint recognition-expression impairment of facial emotions in Huntington's disease despite intact understanding of feelings.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder that causes major motor impairments, also show cognitive and emotional deficits. While their deficit in recognising emotions has been explored in depth, little is known about their ability to express emotions and understand their feelings. If these faculties were impaired, patients might not only mis-read emotion expressions in others but their own emotions might be mis-interpreted by others as well, or thirdly, they might have difficulties understanding and describing their feelings. We compared the performance of recogniti

A controlled single case study with repeated fMRI measurements during the treatment of a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder: testing the nonlinear dynamics approach to psychotherapy.

There is increasing evidence that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with a dysfunction of cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical neuronal circuits. In order to examine treatment-related changes in neuronal processes, a drug-naive female patient with OCD (subtype: washing/contamination fear) and an age- and gender-matched healthy control were repeatedly tested using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the presentation of a symptom provocation task. Patient-specific visual stimuli of symptom provoking situations were compared with disgust provoking and neutral pictures.

Emotional perception deficits in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive deficits associated with frontal lobe dysfunction can occur in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), particularly in individuals with bulbar ALS who can also suffer pathologic emotional lability. Because frontal pathophysiology can alter emotional perception, we examined whether emotional perception deficits occur in ALS, and whether they are related to depressive or dementia symptoms. METHODS: Bulbar ALS participants (n=13) and age-matched healthy normal controls (n=12) completed standardized tests of facial emotional and prosodic recognition, the Geriatric Depression Sca

Decisions and desire.

When we make decisions, we're not always in charge. One moment we hotheadedly let our emotions get the better of us; the next, we're paralyzed by uncertainty. Then we'll pull a brilliant decision out of thin air--and wonder how we did it. Though we may have no idea how decision making happens, neuroscientists peering deep into our brains are beginning to get the picture. What they're finding may not be what you want to hear, but it's worth listening. We have dog brains, basically, with human cortexes stuck on top. By watching the brain in action as it deliberates and decides, neuroscientists a

Consultation and treatment history and causal attributions in an online sample of women with lifelong and acquired vaginismus.

INTRODUCTION: Very little information is available on the consultation and treatment histories of women with lifelong and acquired vaginismus. AIM: This study was conducted to address three areas of interest: first, to collect information on which health care professionals women with acquired and lifelong vaginismus consult and how helpful such consultation were; second, to examine which treatments were typically received and how helpful patients rate such interventions; and third, to explore participants' causal attributions of the vaginal penetration problems as those are what appear to gui

Strengthening tobacco control policy: using plain packaging to reduce product appeal and enhance public awareness.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide. While smoking prevalence has recently declined in Hong Kong, progress has slowed. Plain packaging may reduce product appeal and enhance the impact of pictorial health warnings (PHWs), supporting reduced tobacco use. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to November 2023 among 1,256 adult smokers in Hong Kong. Participants were recruited at outdoor public smoking hotspots and shown branded and plain cigarette packs with 85% PHWs. Perceptions of pack attractiveness, noticeabili

Moderation Effect of Emotional Expressivity on the Associations Between Schizotypal Traits, Autistic Traits and Social Pleasure.

Diminished social pleasure has been reported in people with schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous studies suggested that emotional expressivity is closely correlated with social pleasure. However, the underlying psychological mechanisms between traits related to schizophrenia and ASD, emotional expressivity, and social pleasure remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between subclinical schizotypal and autistic traits, facial expressions, and social pleasure. Eighty-six healthy participants (mean age = 20.35 ± 0.26 years, 44 males) were recruited t

Exploring the Impact of Misophonia Through the Lens of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Framework.

Background: Misophonia is characterized by reduced tolerance to specific sound stimuli known as triggers. The reactions can be emotional, behavioral or physiological. In response to triggers, a person with misophonia might express irritation, anger, or disgust by being verbally or physically aggressive. This ultimately affects their quality of life.Purpose: The present study aimed to determine the impact of misophonia on everyday life using the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework.Research Design: The study used a cross-

Associations Between Childhood Trauma and Social Cognition in Early Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT), in the form of abuse and neglect, and altered social cognition (SC) are both linked to poorer clinical and functional outcomes in psychosis. The impact of CT and its subtypes on SC in early psychosis has been underexplored, with mixed findings from previous studies. The current study investigated the effects of CT and its subtypes on SC in at-risk mental state (ARMS) for psychosis and first episode psychosis (FEP) individuals. METHOD: One hundred and seventeen individuals were included (ARMS [n = 51], FEP [n = 66]). History of CT was assessed using the compo

Physiological and inflammatory changes to natural and skin-related trypophobic images.

INTRODUCTION: The immune system's inflammatory response, driven by pro-inflammatory proteins, protects against external threats. Fear and disgust-inducing stimuli have been linked to immune responses, yet their specific physiological and inflammatory mechanisms in trypophobia remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the inflammatory and physiological responses in relation to natural (non-skin) and skin-related trypophobic images. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty participants (n = 50) were recruited for the study, and their sensitivity to trypophobia was measured using the trypophobia question

Social Cognition in Parkinson's Disease after Focused Ultrasound Subthalamotomy: A Controlled Study.

Social cognition (SC) encompasses a set of cognitive functions that enable individuals to understand and respond appropriately to social interactions. Although focused ultrasound subthalamotomy (FUS-STN) effectively treats Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical motor features, its impact and safety on cognitive-behavioral interactions/interpersonal awareness are unknown. This study investigated the effects of unilateral FUS-STN on facial emotion recognition (FER) and affective and cognitive theory of mind (ToM) in PD patients from a randomized sham-controlled trial (NCT03454425). Subjects performed

Voluntary imitation of dynamic facial expressions in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a facial-behavior analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The difficulties involved in social interaction among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown in many studies. Based on the knowledge that the imitation of facial expressions is a key factor in social interaction and functionality, the focus of prior studies has been on the evaluation of facial expressions in individuals with ADHD. However, little is known about voluntary facial mimicry in individuals with ADHD. In this context, we aimed to evaluate the voluntary-facial-imitation intensity of dynamic facial expressions in children with ADHD. ME

Assessing Fears of Negative Consequences in Children With Symptoms of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Fear of Aversive Consequences (FOAC), such as choking or vomiting, is an important associated feature of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). However, the manifestation of FOAC in young children is poorly understood. This study aimed to describe the fears of children with ARFID symptoms and examine the concordance between parent and child ratings of fear. METHOD: Child-reported FOAC was assessed using an interview designed for children between 6 and 10 years old, the Gustatory Avoidance and Gastrointestinal Stress Symptoms (GAGSS). Examining Bi-directional links between distinct affect states and tobacco lapse during a cessation attempt.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models of addiction highlight the bi-directional links of certain distinct affect states and tobacco lapse, but to date, few studies have examined bi-directional associations, instead examining associations with global affect measures (e.g., negative affect versus feelings of guilt). The present study examines bi-directional associations among 23 distinct affect states with individuals who tobacco lapse among use attempting to quit in an observational study. Evaluating nursing opinion and perception of maggot therapy for hard-to-heal wound management.

OBJECTIVE: Maggot therapy (MT) or larval debridement therapy is a recognised, effective but underutilised treatment for the management of hard-to-heal wounds and infected ulcers. It is available on NHS prescription in the UK, where wound management is predominantly nurse-led. Anecdotal reports and published literature suggest that nurses may be reluctant to utilise the therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feelings and opinions of nurses regarding the use of MT. METHOD: The first stage of this mixed-methods study was a focus group held to discuss MT and opinions of specialist nur

EMDR therapy for misophonia: a pilot study of case series.

BACKGROUND: Misophonia is a disorder in which patients suffer from anger or disgust when confronted with specific sounds such as loud chewing or breathing, causing avoidance of cue-related situations resulting in significant functional impairment. Though the first treatment studies with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) showed promising results, an average of 50% of the patients has not improved much clinically. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to assess the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy as a trauma-focused approach in treating misop
