PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to assess the use of the centre-edge (CE) angle in the assessment of pincer femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) for reliability and predictability in the diagnosis.
METHODS: Between 2004 and 2008, 55 patients underwent surgical treatment for FAI. A control group of 30 was identified among patients attending the emergency department with normal radiographs. Radiographs were assessed by two independent observers both before and after the operation. Nine patients with trauma were excluded. The magnetic resonance arthrogram reports of the remaining 46 patients we

PURPOSE: Hip arthroscopy outcomes for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) remain heterogeneous, with 30-40% of patients failing to achieve meaningful improvement. We aimed to develop and validate a predictive model for achievement of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) using routine preoperative variables, and to compare logistic regression with machine learning algorithms.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 310 consecutive patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAI (2010-2024) at a single institution. Predictor variables included age, sex, body mass index (BMI), morphological et

BACKGROUND: Acetabular overcoverage is associated with pincer-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). A subtype of acetabular overcoverage is caused by a deep acetabulum with a negatively tilted acetabular roof, in which acetabular reorientation may be a preferable alternative to rim trimming to uncover the femoral head. We introduced the true reverse periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) in 2003, which in contrast to an anteverting PAO, also flexes and abducts the acetabulum relative to the intact ilium to decrease anterior and lateral femoral head coverage and correct negative tilt of the acetabul

PURPOSE: To investigate (1) the prevalence, size, and location of acetabular ossicles in general population; (2) differentiation between the characteristic types of acetabular ossicles: unfused ossification centers (true os acetabuli), rim fractures, labral calcifications and loose bodies; and (3) correlation between acetabular ossicles, and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) with symptoms.
METHODS: Patients aged 16 to 60 years who underwent abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) with non-orthopaedic indications in 2016 and patients who underwent hip arthroscopy surgery from 2010 to 20

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic hip surgery is becoming increasingly popular for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement and labral tears. Reports of outcomes of hip arthroscopy converted to total hip arthroplasty (THA) have been limited by small sample sizes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of prior hip arthroscopy on THA complications.
METHODS: We queried our institutional database from January 2005 and December 2017 and identified 95 hip arthroscopy conversion THAs. A control cohort of 95 primary THA patients was matched by age, gender, and American Society of Anesth

BACKGROUND: There is literature on the association between chronic preoperative pain and worse outcomes among patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). However, there are few data on whether there is an optimum window that provides the best midterm surgical outcomes.
PURPOSE: To assess the outcomes of hip arthroscopy for FAIS according to timing of surgical intervention.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Patients undergoing arthroscopic intervention for FAIS with a minimum 2-year follow-up were included. All patients compl

BACKGROUND: Borderline developmental dysplasia of the hip (BDDH) is frequently diagnosed concurrently with cam impingement. While hip arthroscopy has advanced the treatment of hip joint pathology, including femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), arthroscopic treatment for FAI in the setting of BDDH remains a challenge amid a subset of patients. The risk factors of poor clinical results after hip arthroscopic labral preservation and FAI corrections in the setting of BDDH patients have not been well established.
HYPOTHESIS: Pre- and intraoperative findings can predict the poor clinical outcomes af

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a recognized cause of hip pain and decreased quality of life and has been linked to primary idiopathic hip osteoarthritis (OA). Although the operative indications for FAI have expanded to include older patients, we do not know whether there is an increased risk of conversion to THA after femoroacetabular osteoplasty (FAO) via the mini-open approach for FAI in patients older than 40 years compared with younger patients, after controlling for other confounding variables.

PURPOSE: To compare femoroacetabular motion in a series of consecutive symptomatic patients with hip pain throughout the range of motion of the hip using a real-time radial gradient echo (GRE) sequence in addition to the routine hip protocol sequences for magnetic resonance (MR) arthrographic assessment of patients with and without clinical femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome. In particular, we sought to assess whether the additional dynamic sequence could differentiate between patients with and without a positive physical exam maneuver for FAI syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The anterior impingement test is intended to detect anterosuperior acetabular labral lesions. In patients treated for labral lesions its sensitivity is reportedly 95% to 100%, and in a small group of patients undergoing periacetabular osteotomy, its sensitivity was 59% and specificity 100%. However, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predict value of this test to detect these labral lesions in unselected patients with hip pain are unknown.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We investigated these four parameters (1) in unselected patients with hip pain, and (2)

BACKGROUND: Many two-dimensional (2-D) radiographic views are used to help diagnose cam femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), but there is little consensus as to which view or combination of views is most effective at visualizing the magnitude and extent of the cam lesion (ie, severity). Previous studies have used a single image from a sequence of CT or MR images to serve as a reference standard with which to evaluate the ability of 2-D radiographic views and associated measurements to describe the severity of the cam lesion. However, single images from CT or MRI data may fail to capture the ape

BACKGROUND: Clinically, understanding how the soft tissue envelope adapts to various forms of hip dysfunction could enhance both surgical and nonsurgical management. Very few studies have looked at soft tissue structures as preoperative discriminators between varying underlying etiologies of hip conditions.
PURPOSE: To demonstrate that the magnetic resonance arthrography assessment of soft tissue structures of the hip will preoperatively differ in patients with different underlying hip joint diseases.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients who underwent preoperative magnetic resonance arthrography an

BACKGROUND: Although radiographic coxa profunda has been considered an indicator of acetabular overcoverage, recent studies suggest that radiographic coxa profunda is a nonspecific finding seen even in hip dysplasia. The morphologic features of coxa profunda in hip dysplasia and the frequency with which the two overlap are not well defined.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined (1) the prevalence of radiographic coxa profunda in patients with hip dysplasia; (2) the morphologic differences of the acetabulum and pelvis between patients with hip dysplasia and control subjects; and (3) the morphologi

BACKGROUND: Playing tennis is associated with various movements that can lead to labral injuries and may require arthroscopic surgery. While hip arthroscopies have demonstrated good outcomes in athletes, there is limited literature reporting patient reported outcomes (PROs) and return to sport (RTS) in competitive or recreational tennis players after arthroscopic hip surgery. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to (1) report minimum five-year PROs and RTS in tennis players who underwent arthroscopic hip surgery and (2) compare outcomes between recreational and competitive tennis pl

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement is increasingly recognized as a cause of hip pain but its incidence after an innominate osteotomy for the correction of acetabular dysplasia has not been determined. This information would be essential for the orthopaedic surgeon because it has the potential to produce a poor outcome in the long term when trying to balance acetabular instability and overcorrection.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of our study were (1) to determine the frequency with which clinically relevant femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) occurs after an innominate osteotomy for t
