Alloplastic temporomandibular total joint replacement (TJR) for end-stage disease, congenital disorders and following ablative oncological surgery has been shown to reduce pain and improve function. The purpose was to assess the maximum voluntary bite force and maximum interincisal opening (MIO) in patients undergoing alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacement (TJR). Seventeen patients with different diagnoses resulting in condylar hypomobility (8 patients; 15 joints) and condylar instability (9 patients; 12 joints) had undergone alloplastic TMJ reconstruction. Maximum voluntary bit

OBJECTIVE: Report outcomes of 2 first known cases using a cochlear implant (CI) and a contralateral auditory brainstem implant (ABI).
PATIENTS: Two adult patients with postlingual sensorineural deafness.
INTERVENTION: Both patients had unilateral CI insertion followed by contralateral ABI insertion. In 1 case, there was a large left vestibular schwannoma in the only hearing left ear. CI insertion was first performed in the right longstanding deaf ear. Shortly afterward during the left translabyrinthine surgery, a left ABI was simultaneously inserted. The second patient had Ménière's disease

BACKGROUND: In comparison with the abundant literature on Le Fort I and III osteotomies, there is scant information on the Le Fort II osteotomy. Our goal in this study was to define the indications and techniques of the elective Le Fort II osteotomy. We reviewed our 30-year experience, which is the longest series of patients treated with Le Fort II osteotomies at a single institution.
METHODS: A review of the records of 13 consecutive patients at our institution with a diagnosis of Le Fort II was conducted. Data analyzed included demographic information, indications, techniques, complications

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction may be required in complex cases in which there are additional mandibular or zygomatic arch defects. The reconstructive options include autogenous tissue, alloplastic material, or combinations of these. The authors describe 4 cases in which TMJ reconstruction was performed with TMJ Concepts customized joint prostheses. The prosthetic components were designed to restore major defects in the zygomatic arch and the mandibular ramus and body, including one case in which the mandibular component was used to restore total mandibular continuity. The prosth

PURPOSE: A voxel-based median plane (optimal symmetry plane [OSP]) was developed to assess facial bone asymmetry. The purpose of the present study was to introduce a new method of planning surgical correction of facial asymmetry using the OSPs as guides and test its effectiveness.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of 20 facial asymmetry patients with a mandibular deviation of 4 mm or greater or 4° or more that required surgical correction. In the test group (n = 8), the plans for asymmetry correction were formulated using the matching OSP method, in which the OSPs of t

Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is a rare congenital anomaly that involves immature derivatives from the first and second pharyngeal arches. The genetic pathogenesis of CFM is still unclear. Here we interrogate 0.9 million genetic variants in 939 CFM cases and 2,012 controls from China. After genotyping of an additional 443 cases and 1,669 controls, we identify 8 significantly associated loci with the most significant SNP rs13089920 (logistic regression P=2.15 × 10(-120)) and 5 suggestive loci. The above 13 associated loci, harboured by candidates of ROBO1, GATA3, GBX2, FGF3, NRP2, EDNRB, SHROOM

This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a
