Pars Interarticularis and Pedicle Stress Injuries in Young Athletes With Low Back Pain: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 902 Patients Evaluated With Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that spondylolysis occurs predominantly at the L5 and L4 levels, with defects at higher levels occurring in <5% of cases. However, computed tomography and radiography were the primary imaging modalities in these studies. Current evidence regarding diagnostic imaging for pediatric lumbar spondylolysis suggests that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is as accurate as computed tomography in detecting early stress reactions of the pars interarticularis or pedicles without fractures while avoiding radiation exposure. The early detection of spondylolysis res

Advantages of CT Versus MRI for Preoperative Assessment of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Capitellum.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered to be the gold standard for imaging of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD). PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to determine the additional value of a preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan in adolescent patients with capitellar OCD of the elbow. Consistent with the fact that OCD is a lesion involving the subchondral bone, the hypothesis was that CT would be superior to MRI for imaging OCD of the capitellum. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: All patients being treated surgically for an OCD of the

Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Young Athletes Using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.

Elite young athletes have to cope with multiple psychological demands such as training volume, mental and physical fatigue, spatial separation of family and friends or time management problems may lead to reduced mental and physical recovery. While normative data regarding symptoms of anxiety and depression for the general population is available (Hinz and Brähler, 2011), hardly any information exists for adolescents in general and young athletes in particular. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess overall symptoms of anxiety and depression in young athletes as well as possible sex di

The Epidemiology of Stress Fractures in Collegiate Student-Athletes, 2004-2005 Through 2013-2014 Academic Years.

CONTEXT: Stress fractures are injuries caused by cumulative, repetitive stress that leads to abnormal bone remodeling. Specific populations, including female athletes and endurance athletes, are at higher risk than the general athletic population. Whereas more than 460 000 individuals participate in collegiate athletics in the United States, no large study has been conducted to determine the incidence of stress fractures in collegiate athletes. OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of stress fractures in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes and investigate rates and patterns

Incidence and Epidemiology of Foot and Ankle Injuries in Elite Collegiate Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle injuries are increasing in competitive professional and collegiate athletics. Many of these injuries result in considerable missed time from sports and often require surgical intervention. To develop and implement effective practice participation strategies, return-to-play protocols, and injury prevention programs, an understanding of injury trends and epidemiology is vital. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of foot and ankle injuries in elite athletes participating in 37 sports at a single National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division

[Elbow injuries in childhood].

Fractures and dislocations of the elbow are some of the most common injuries in childhood and adolescence. The majority occur in sport and play activities, e.g., a fall from gymnastics apparatus or a bike, or from popular sports items, such as skateboards or in-line skates. The injuries can be divided into pure dislocations of the joint and fractures of the distal humerus, proximal radius and ulna, or combinations of both. In addition, extra- and intraarticular fracture types are defined, with the latter as partial or complete joint lesions. Dislocations of the elbow joint or the radial head c

[Lesions of the growth plate caused by sports stress].

Besides the positive physiological, psychological and social aspects, sports activities in adolescents bear the risk of injuries and overuse of the locomotor system. Previous examinations have shown that increased stress to the growth plates by sports activities, in relation to the intensity of strain during growth spurts, can influence normal growth. In female gymnasts, hormonal changes can decrease the growth speed and long-term growth. On the other hand, during more intensive phases of growth the column cartilage of the growth plate is the weakest part of the locomotor system because of the

Evaluating the prevalence of eating disorder risk and low energy availability risk in collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders and low energy availability independently and negatively impact eating behaviors and attitudes and overall health. Screening provides early identification of athletes suffering from these conditions, yet few studies have evaluated both simultaneously, and none have investigated eating disorder and low energy availability in the context of sex or sport type. This study determined the prevalence of eating disorder and low energy availability risk in collegiate athletes at a large National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 university and the variation

Japanese radio calisthenics prevents the reduction of skeletal muscle mass volume in people with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Reduction of muscle mass and strength is an important treatment target for patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have reported that high-intensity resistance training improves physical function; however, all patients found it difficult to perform high-intensity resistance training. Radio calisthenics, considered as therapeutic exercises to promote health in Japan, are simple exercises that can be performed regardless of age and help move the muscles and joints of the whole body effectively according to the rhythm of radio. We investigated the efficacy of radio calisthenics f

Narrative histories of physiotherapy in Colombia, Ecuador, and Argentina.

BACKGROUND: The history of physiotherapy in Latin America has received little attention thus far in the English-speaking literature. In this paper, we draw on narratives from activists, educators, and professional leaders who have been instrumental in shaping the development of physiotherapy in Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador. Physiotherapists in the Latin American countries faced many similar challenges, including developing physiotherapy in the shadow of medicine, overcoming conservative attitudes toward women professionals, and frequent social upheaval. AIMS: The paper explores the disput
