A reproductive justice approach to understanding women's experiences with HPV and cervical cancer prevention.

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. HPV infection has been linked to more than 90% of cervical cancers. A vaccine to prevent the acquisition of HPV has been available since 2006. The purpose of this study was to investigate women's perceptions of cervical cancer prevention, including HPV vaccination. A reproductive justice framework guided data collection and analysis. In 2016, researchers conducted 70 in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews with women aged 19-78 years in South Carolina. A purposive sampling approach was employed to maximize requisite variety based on social, ec

Fasciolopsis buski (Digenea: Fasciolidae) from China and India may represent distinct taxa based on mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences.

BACKGROUND: Fasciolopsis buski is a zoonotic intestinal fluke infecting humans and pigs, but it has been seriously neglected. It is yet to know whether there is any genetic diversity among F. buski from different geographical locations, particularly in sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and mitochondrial (mt) DNA. Therefore, we determined the sequences of partial 18S, the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and the complete mt genome of F. buski from China, compared the rDNA and mtDNA sequences with those of isolates from India and Vietnam, and assessed the phylogenetic rela

Childhood adversity, social support, and telomere length among perinatal women.

Adverse perinatal health outcomes are heightened among women with psychosocial risk factors, including childhood adversity and a lack of social support. Biological aging could be one pathway by which such outcomes occur. However, data examining links between psychosocial factors and indicators of biological aging among perinatal women are limited. The current study examined the associations of childhood socioeconomic status (SES), childhood trauma, and current social support with telomere length in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a sample of 81 women assessed in early, mid, and l

Elevation of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 activity in Holocaust survivor offspring: evidence for an intergenerational effect of maternal trauma exposure.

BACKGROUND: Adult offspring of Holocaust survivors comprise an informative cohort in which to study intergenerational transmission of the effects of trauma exposure. Lower cortisol and enhanced glucocorticoid sensitivity have been previously demonstrated in Holocaust survivors with PTSD, and in offspring of Holocaust survivors in association with maternal PTSD. In other work, reduction in the activity of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD-2), which inactivates cortisol, was identified in Holocaust survivors in comparison to age-matched, unexposed Jewish controls. Parental psychopathology and the risk of suicidal behavior in their offspring: results from the World Mental Health surveys.

Previous research suggests that parental psychopathology predicts suicidal behavior among offspring; however, the more fine-grained associations between specific parental disorders and distinct stages of the pathway to suicide are not well understood. We set out to test the hypothesis that parental disorders associated with negative mood would predict offspring suicide ideation, whereas disorders characterized by impulsive aggression (for example, antisocial personality) and anxiety/agitation (for example, panic disorder) would predict which offspring act on their suicide ideation and make a s

Digital technology use for social cohesion among older adults in rural Myanmar during the civil war: barriers and coping strategies.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing in Myanmar is occurring amid prolonged political instability and civil war, exacerbating social isolation and vulnerabilities among older adults, particularly in rural areas. While digital technologies have the potential to support social cohesion, little is known about how older adults in conflict-affected rural Myanmar access and use these tools, the barriers they face, and the strategies they adopt to cope with digital exclusion. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in rural communities in Kayin State, southeastern Myanmar. Semi-structured in-depth in

"I belong to nowhere now": An interpretative phenomenological analysis of Pakistani migrant women's lived experiences of identity, nostalgia, exclusion and wellbeing in Norway.

BackgroundMigrant women's health and wellbeing are shaped by intersecting structures of gender, race, religion, and postcoloniality. Pakistani migrant women in Norway occupy a particular intersection of these structures, in which collectivistic kinship expectations, patriarchal norms, and postcolonial inheritance interact with Norwegian institutional gatekeeping. Despite a growing Pakistani-origin population in Norway, little qualitative research has examined how the identity work of recent first-generation Pakistani migrant women relates to their psychological and social wellbeing.ObjectivesT

Factors Influencing Undernutrition among Female Adolescent Students in Darchula District, Nepal.

Failure to understand and address the problem of malnutrition and its associated factors among female adolescents could lead to a vicious cycle of intergenerational malnutrition. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six secondary schools of four rural municipalities in Darchula District, Nepal. Data collection for the study was conducted from November 2021 to February 2022. Four hundred female adolescent students aged 15 to 19 years old were selected using quota sampling. The study aims to examine the prevalence of malnutrition by assessing different levels of body mass index (BMI) that is

Exploring Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in youth mental health: reflections from researchers and young people.

BACKGROUND: Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) promotes inclusive, anticipatory, and reflexive research practices that respond to societal needs. While widely applied in technological fields, its application in youth mental health remains limited. This study aimed to explore how RRI principles are understood and enacted within a large interdisciplinary programme on digital youth mental health in the United Kingdom, focusing on the perspectives of both researchers and young people. METHODS: An online survey was conducted with 21 researchers and 5 young people (mean age = 21 years, stand

The Indigenous Queensland Family Cohort (I-QFC) study: a feasibility birth cohort study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families - cohort profile.

PURPOSE: The Developmental Origin of Health and Disease framework emphasises the intergenerational influence of both maternal and paternal factors on the perinatal and longer-term outcomes of offspring. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have driven major advances in family and health research across Australia, including longitudinal studies grounded in community priorities. Despite this progress, few birth cohort studies have focused on Indigenous families and even fewer have examined the health and well-being of Indigenous fathers. PARTICIPANTS: The Indigenous Queensland Fami

Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and DNA methylation of newborns in cord blood.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk of poor health outcomes later in life. Psychosocial stressors may also have intergenerational health effects by which parental ACEs are associated with mental and physical health of children. Epigenetic programming may be one mechanism linking parental ACEs to child health. This study aimed to investigate epigenome-wide associations of maternal preconception ACEs with DNA methylation patterns of children. In the Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas study, cord blood DNA methylation was measured us

When adult children migrate: Intergenerational solidarity, family functioning, and subjective wellbeing among older parents left behind in rural China.

China's sustained rural-to-urban labor migration has produced a population of older parents whose adult children work at a substantial distance from the home village. We examined whether the out-migration of adult children (respondents' grown offspring who had left the household for work) was associated with family functioning and subjective well-being among older parents remaining in three rural Chinese provinces (Sichuan, Anhui, and Henan), and which intergenerational solidarity pathways accounted for those associations. We conducted a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey of 479 rural

Case Report: From somatic pain to shared narrative-mentalization and intergenerational trauma in a transcultural group consultation.

INTRODUCTION: Somatic symptoms in migrant and trauma-affected young people often resist a strictly biomedical reading. Trauma, forced migration and family silences may disrupt the parental reflective function, leaving experience unsymbolized and the body as the primary site of expression. Group-based transcultural consultation (TC) has been proposed as a setting able to temporarily sustain mentalization. METHODS: We report the case of Gloria, a young Kinyarwanda-speaking Congolese woman (Banyamulenge) followed since late adolescence after hospitalization for chronic disabling pain with somato

Methylation Patterns of Diabetes and Obesity Susceptibility Genes in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Analysis from Karachi, Pakistan.

Background: Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and their offspring have an increased risk of adverse perinatal and long-term health outcomes, which may be attributable to epigenetic modification of diabetes and obesity susceptibility genes. We aimed to investigate the methylation patterns of eight genes in GDM and normoglycemic (NG) mothers, and their respective offspring. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted at Aga Khan University from August 2019 to December 2022, recruited pregnant women in the first trimester of gestation from the outpatient obstetrics clinic. Understanding how to live with hepatitis B: a qualitative investigation of peer advice for Chinese people living with hepatitis B in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B is a chronic viral infection, a leading cause of primary liver cancer and identified as a major public health priority by the World Health Organization. Despite a high proportion of people in Australia who have been diagnosed with hepatitis B, significant gaps remain in health care access and in accurate knowledge about hepatitis B. Most people with hepatitis B in Australia were born in China, where the infection has an intergenerational impact with significant social implications resulting from the infection. Female adolescents living with HIV telling their story through 'my story' book in Malawi: A visual methodology innovation.

INTRODUCTION: Female adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus are a unique population facing lifelong challenges in reproductive and sexual health ranging from relational, social and legal-ethical considerations. While HIV prevalence of young females is higher than the males (4.9% versus 1%), evidence show that these adolescents in Malawi initiate sex as early as 15 years mostly with adult partners. Yet, young people are frequently reported to be reluctant to discuss sexual matters and demonstrate avoidance of direct questions on sexual issues during interviews. It is critical ther
