Methane (CH4) emissions from Arctic lakes are a large and growing source of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere with critical implications for global climate. Because Arctic lakes are ice covered for much of the year, understanding the metabolic flexibility of methanotrophs under anoxic conditions would aid in characterizing the mechanisms responsible for limiting CH4 emissions from high-latitude regions. Using sediments from an active CH4 seep in Lake Qalluuraq, Alaska, we conducted DNA-based stable isotope probing (SIP) in anoxic mesocosms and found that aerobic Gammaproteobacterial methanotrop

Since the start of synthetic fertilizer production more than a hundred years ago, the coastal ocean has been exposed to increasing nutrient loading, which has led to eutrophication and extensive algal blooms. Such hypereutrophic waters might harbor anaerobic nitrogen (N) cycling processes due to low-oxygen microniches associated with abundant organic particles, but studies on nitrate reduction in coastal pelagic environments are scarce. Here, we report on 15N isotope-labeling experiments, metagenome, and RT-qPCR data from a large hypereutrophic lagoon indicating that dissimilatory nitrate redu

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) process is an important nitrate reduction pathway in the environment. Numerous studies focused on the DNRA, especially in various natural habitats. However, little is known about the envrionmental parameters driving the DNRA process in anthropogenic ecosystem. Human activities put forward significant influence on nitrogen cycle and bacterial communities of sediment. This study aimed to assess the DNRA potential rates, nrfA gene abundance, DNRA bacterial community's diversity and influencing factors in a national wetland park near the Yangtze Ri

The objective of our study was to investigate sexual reproduction of Daphnia magna associated with mating behaviors and hatching rates, according to different algal food sources. Since a diatom is known to contain more abundant long-chain poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), we hypothesized that the diatom-consuming D. magna would exhibit more successful reproduction rates. Upon the hypothesis, we designed three experiments using two algal species, a green alga (Chlorella vulgaris) and a diatom (Stephanodiscus hantzschii). From the results, we found that the mating frequency and copulation du

Children who are burned >40% total body surface area lose significant quantities of both bone and muscle mass because of acute bone resorption, inflammation, and endogenous glucocorticoid production, which result in negative nitrogen balance. Because administration of the bisphosphonate pamidronate within 10 days of the burn injury completely prevents the bone loss, we asked whether muscle protein balance was altered by the preservation of bone. We reviewed the results from 17 burned pediatric subjects previously enrolled in a double-blind randomized controlled study of pamidronate in the prev

The growth rates of young chicks were varied from 0 to 10% per day by manipulation of the adequacy of the amino acid and energy supply. The rates of protein synthesis in the white breast (pectoralis thoracica) muscle and the dark leg (gastrocnemius and peronaeus longus) muscles were estimated by feeding l-[U-(14)C]tyrosine in amino acid/agar-gel diets (;dietary infusion'). This treatment rapidly and consistently produced an isotopic equilibrium in the expired CO(2) and in the free tyrosine of plasma and the muscles. Wholebody protein synthesis in 2-week-old chicks was estimated from the tyrosi

Sham-operated and parathyroidectomized (PTX) rats were divided into two pair-fed groups, one on a normal mineral intake (0.5% Ca, 0.3% P), the other on a regimen low in phosphorus (0.5% Ca, 0.03% P). P depletion led to a drop in plasma P and urine P, a rise in plasma Ca and a marked rise in urine Ca, a drop in serum magnesium and a rise in urine Mg. The changes were more pronounced in the PTX animals, but final values were the same in both groups. Parallel bone-seeking isotope (85Sr, 177Lu, 237Np) studies in nonablated animals revealed an increase in the urinary nuclide output and in the urine

Rapid warming along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is altering glacier dynamics, freshwater inputs and biogeochemical processes. This study assessed how interannual and spatial variability influence the transfer and composition of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the pelagic to the benthic environment within a glaciated fjord of the WAP. Surveys were conducted over four consecutive years (2022-2025). Biogeochemical markers, isotopic signatures and elemental analysis were used to evaluate sources, quality and trophic status of suspended and sedimentary POC in Collins Bay. Surface su

Photothermal ammonia synthesis has emerged as a promising route to couple nitrogen fixation with solar energy, yet the mechanistic origin of light-assisted activity remains difficult to establish because illumination can contribute through heat generation, photoexcited carriers, or both simultaneously. This Review examines recent photothermal NH3 synthesis systems from a diagnostic perspective. Representative Ru- and Fe-based materials are discussed within four photothermal regimes: photo-driven thermocatalysis, photo-assisted thermocatalysis, photothermal co-catalysis, and thermally assisted

In pelagic ecosystems, sharp vertical gradients in resources and environmental conditions structure species adaptations, interactions and community assembly. Yet, the ecological mechanisms underlying these patterns remain poorly resolved. To investigate the functional and trophic structure of micronektonic fishes, specimens were collected across the epipelagic (0-200 m) and mesopelagic layers (200-1300 m) using a midwater trawl. A functional analysis of 85 species, characterized by 10 categorical traits, was conducted to define functional groups, identify key ecological trade-offs among them a

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and a major ozone-depleting substance of the nitrogen cycle. While global N2O budgets focus on microbial soil sources, evidence suggests that living plants can also contribute to N2O emissions. However, the origin of plant-associated N2O fluxes is contested: measured emissions may arise from endogenous plant metabolism or merely from transport of soil-derived N2O. In this review, we clarify these pathways and synthesize current findings from laboratory and field studies. Experimental evidence from 15N-tracer and axenic-culture studies supports N2O

As one of the areas most affected by human activities, urban lakes play a crucial role in global carbon cycle. Currently, submerged macrophyte restoration is a common ecological practice in urban lakes, primarily aimed at improving water quality and enhancing the aesthetic value of lake environments. Despite its widespread application, its contribution to carbon emission reduction has not received sufficient attention. In this study, we quantified the fluxes, concentrations and isotope signatures of CH4 and CO2 in the restoration zone (RL), the unrestored zone (UR) and the inflow rivers (IR) o

The investigation of anaerobic pyrene biodegradation by nitrate-reducing microorganisms, particularly the identification of responsible species and elucidation of associated metabolic pathways, had remained in its nascent stages. In this study, a nitrate-reducing bacterium, designated strain PYRN-PV, was identified, which showed the closest phylogenetic relationship to Paracoccus versutus. This strain was newly found to biodegrade 99.6 % of pyrene within 20 days while simultaneously reducing nitrate to nitrogen gas. Through comprehensive metabolite and isotopic-metabolite analyses, coupled wit

The storm-induced export of nitrogen (N) from agricultural watersheds significantly impacts aquatic ecosystems, yet the mechanisms of source supply and transport behind N species remain unclear. Here, we investigated the hydrological factors influencing the timing and magnitude of river N species export in a Chinese pomelo agricultural watershed. We conducted continuous observations of watershed hydrology, N species, and their isotopic ratios along a soil-groundwater-river continuum during two storm events in 2018-2019. We found the export flux of river NO3-N covers ∼80% of the total N flux du

Reconstructing the life histories of extinct hominins remains one of the main foci of paleoanthropological inquiry, as an extended juvenile period impacts the social and cognitive development of species. However, the paucity of hominin remains, the lack of comparative hominoid data, and the destructive nature of many life history approaches have limited our understanding of the relationship between dental development (eruption) and weaning in primates. Alternatively, the rate of dental wear in early-forming teeth has been suggested a good proxy for the timing of weaning. Here we test this hypo

Estuarine systems are important sites of eliminating reactive nitrogen (N) delivered from land to sea. Numerous studies have focused on N cycling in estuarine sediment. However, the N elimination role of suspended sediments in estuarine turbid water column, which might provide anaerobic microenvironment for N loss, is rarely considered. This study examined the community dynamics and activities of denitrifying and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria in the water column of the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) of the Yangtze Estuary, using molecular and 15N isotope-tracing techniques. RATIONALE: Hypertrophied hearts switch from mainly using fatty acids (FAs) to an increased reliance on glucose for energy production. It has been shown that preserving FA oxidation (FAO) prevents the pathological shift of substrate preference, preserves cardiac function and energetics, and reduces cardiomyocyte hypertrophy during cardiac stresses. However, it remains elusive whether substrate metabolism regulates cardiomyocyte hypertrophy directly or via a secondary effect of improving cardiac energetics.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the mechanisms of how preservation of

In previous studies we established a rat model of acute tendinitis including functional and mechanical measures of healing. Achilles' tendinitis was induced by injection of collagenase, an enzyme that produces localized fiber digestion and edema formation. As quantitative measures of tissue inflammation, hypercellularity and edema were evaluated in injured tendons in comparison with controls. Using the rat tendinitis model, we have applied isotope-coded affinity tag analysis (ICAT) methodology to indicate localized tendon healing by quantitating protein expression. This novel proteomics method
