After orthognathic surgery the forehead remains unchanged. To produce facial harmony, the planned projection of the maxillomandibular complex must be placed in the correct relations to the unchanged position of the forehead. We have compared the anterior soft tissue projection of the maxillomandibular complex relative to the forehead after Le Fort I advancement surgery for correction of maxillary hypoplasia with that of a local reference group chosen by lay assessors. We retrospectively studied 32 patients (16 men and 16 women) all of whom had previously been treated by Le Fort I maxillary adv

The scientific literature is sparse on reports that evaluate facial asymmetry after mandibular reconstructive surgery objectively. The aim of this study is to introduce and validate a new method, using three dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry, that quantifies soft-tissue facial asymmetry in patients who have undergone mandibular reconstruction. To validate the new method, two observers applied the method on 3D photographs of five patients and five controls. An inter-observer difference of 0.04 mm (-0.08 to 0.17) was found with a measurement error of 0.13 mm. 15 3D photographs of the mandibu

Microleakage presents a major challenge to the success of all restorations placed in the oral cavity, resulting in postoperative sensitivity, pulpal irritation, and secondary caries formation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of an adhesive cavity liner under amalgam restorations in primary teeth. Sixty class V amalgam restorations were placed on the buccal and/or lingual surfaces of 38 primary molars and canine teeth. A dentin adhesive cavity liner was placed under 20 of the amalgam restorations. Another 20 restorations were lined with copal cavity varnish prior to amal

AIM: Assess the feasibility, validity and precision of multimodal image fusion to capture oncology facial defects based on plaster casts.
METHODS: Ten casts of oncology facial defects were acquired. To create gold standard models, a 3D volumetric scan of each cast was obtained with a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner (NewTomVG). This was converted into surface data using open-source medical segmentation software and cropped to produce a CBCT mask using an open-source system for editing meshes. For the experimental model, the external facial features were captured using stereophotog

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: The conotruncal anomaly face syndrome (CTAF) comprises congenital heart disease and dysmorphic face, and is frequently associated with cleft palate or hypernasality. There have been many discussions about the overlap with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCF). The aim of this study was to clarify the craniofacial characteristics of CTAF patients by clinical examination, and photogrammetric and cephalometric analyses, and to clarify the differences compared to published data on VCF.
RESULTS: The facial features of CTAF included hypertelorism, small palpebral fissures, upward sl

Although two dimensional cephalometry is the standard method for analyzing the results of orthognathic surgery, it has potential limits in frontal soft tissue analysis. We have utilized a 3 dimensional camera to examine changes in soft tissue landmarks in patients with skeletal class III dentofacial deformity who underwent two-jaw rotational setback surgery. We assessed 25 consecutive Asian patients (mean age, 22 years; range, 17-32 years) with skeletal class III dentofacial deformities who underwent two-jaw rotational surgery without maxillary advancement. Using a 3D camera, we analyzed chang

Orthognathic surgery is undergone to improve facial and dental aesthetics and to improve function. Three dimensional (3D) soft tissue analysis based on stereophotogrammetry provides a realistic measurement of facial morphology. There is a need for objective assessment of surgery outcomes. The study aim was to evaluate the 3D naso-maxillary complex soft tissue morphology following Le Fort I maxillary advancement and compare the findings with a local reference group. 3D images of 112 volunteers were captured using stereophotogrammetry and viewed by 8 lay people; 40 images (16 males and 24 female

BACKGROUND: A severely crooked nose due to trauma or other causes is difficult to correct. Although various nasal osteotomy techniques have been suggested, satisfactory outcomes have not always been achieved especially in centrally deviated noses. Definite correction of the midline and shape of the bony framework is necessary. We aimed to investigate a novel one-piece nasal bone osteotomy approach consisting of transverse osteotomy continued with bilateral lateral osteotomies for the correction of a centrally deviated nose.
METHODS: This retrospective chart review included 66 consecutive pati

Objective outcome analysis of nasal surgery remains difficult. Recently, evaluation of nasal shape following rhinosurgery shifted from two-dimensional evaluation to more sophisticated three-dimensional (3D) analysis techniques, including stereophotogrammetry, computed tomography, and 3D laser scanning. This article explores the feasibility of using 3D laser surface scanners as a tool for preoperative planning and quality control in rhinosurgery.

BACKGROUND: Excessive early migration of femoral stems following total hip arthroplasty and tibial components following total knee arthroplasty is associated with their long-term survival and allows reliable early evaluation of implant performance. However, a similar relationship involving acetabular components following hip arthroplasty has not been evaluated. This prospective, long-term study with clinical and Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) follow-up establishes the existence of this relationship and its associated diagnostic performance.
METHODS: Thirty-nine consecutive pati
