The safety of ONRAB® in select non-target wildlife.

ONRAB(®) is a recombinant human adenovirus type 5 (HAd5) with the rabies glycoprotein gene incorporated into its genome. ONRAB(®) has been used in Canada as an oral rabies vaccine in target wildlife species such as: red fox (Vulpes vulpes), raccoon (Procyon lotor), and striped skunk (Mepthis mephitis). We evaluated the safety of ONRAB(®) in non-target wildlife species likely to contact the vaccine baits during oral rabies vaccine campaigns in the United States. We investigated the effects of oral inoculation of high titer ONRAB(®), approximately ten times the dose given to target species, in w

The epidemiology of animal trichinellosis in China.

The epidemiology of animal trichinellosis in China based mainly upon original Chinese literature published between 1937 and 2004 is reviewed. The seroprevalence of Trichinella infection in herbivores was 0.7% (2/300) in cattle and 0.8% (4/500) in sheep. The prevalence of trichinellosis in naturally infected cattle was 1.2% (2/163). Trichinella larvae were detected in 1.4% (3/215) of sheep and in 2.1% (1/47) of beef cattle sold at markets. Canine trichinellosis was recorded in 13 Provinces, Autonomous Regions or Municipalities (P/A/M) and the average prevalence of the infection in dogs slaughte

Amyloidogenicity of naturally occurring full-length animal IAPP variants.

The aggregation of the 37-amino acid polypeptide human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP), as either insoluble amyloid or as small oligomers, appears to play a direct role in the death of human pancreatic β-islet cells in type 2 diabetes. hIAPP is considered to be one of the most amyloidogenic proteins known. The quick aggregation of hIAPP leads to the formation of toxic species, such as oligomers and fibers, that damage mammalian cells (both human and rat pancreatic cells). Whether this toxicity is necessary for the progression of type 2 diabetes or merely a side effect of the disease remains

Antibiotic susceptibility in vitro of Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica isolates from Germany.

BACKGROUND: Tularaemia is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. In Germany, the disease is still rare (e.g. 34 human cases reported in 2015). There is a lack of data about the susceptibility of F. tularensis strains to antibiotics, because many cases are diagnosed using serological assays only. OBJECTIVES: The antibiotic susceptibility in vitro of F. tularensis subsp. holarctica strains isolated in Germany was assessed to determine whether the currently recommended empirical therapy is still adequate. METHODS: A total of 128 F. tularensis strains were investigate

Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti. IV. Evaluation of antibody reactivity to heterologous antigens.

Sera from individuals in an area of Haiti endemic for Mansonella ozzardi were analyzed for reactivity to antigens of Brugia pahangi, Dirofilaria immitis, Mansonella llewellyni or Ascaris lumbricoides using either an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test. IgM and IgG reactivity to all antigens was observed with sera from both microfilaremic and amicrofilaremic individuals when compared to reactivity of sera from individuals from nonendemic areas. Antibody reactivity to B. pahangi was greater than that to other antigens. IgG reactivity of sera from ende

PCR assays for detection of Baylisascaris procyonis eggs and larvae.

The objective of this study was to develop polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for detection of Baylisascaris procyonis eggs and larvae in fecal, environmental, and tissue samples. We have optimized conventional and real-time PCR assays for B. procyonis using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 2 gene as the target for amplification. The lower limit of detection of the parasite genomic DNA was 10 pg in the conventional PCR and 100 fg in the real-time PCR. In both PCR assays, specific amplification of a 146 bp product was achieved with DNA extracted from a single in vitro hatched B. procyon

SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance in Free-Ranging Wildlife in New England and Virginia, United States, 2022-2025.

Since its emergence in 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected a wide range of animal species, including wildlife. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection has been widely reported in wildlife, particularly in white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) across the United States, data on viral circulation in New England wildlife remain limited. Here, we investigated active SARS-CoV-2 infection and serological evidence of previous exposure in free-ranging wildlife from New England and Virginia. We examined samples from 1646 animals representing 29 wildlife specie

First Molecular Typing of Tick-Derived Coxiella burnetii From Wildlife in South Korea: Surveillance and Genetic Characterization.

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a widespread zoonosis characterized by environmental persistence and a broad host range. Wildlife and their associated ticks are increasingly recognized as crucial elements in the ecology of this pathogen; however, molecular data from these reservoirs in South Korea remain scarce. From April to December 2024, 2747 ticks were collected from 297 wild animals across 16 regions of South Korea. Tick species were identified, and the spatial and temporal distributions of C. burnetii and Coxiella-like bacteria (CLB) were analyzed using molecular detection and m

Identification of new anti-nCoV drug chemical compounds from Indian spices exploiting SARS-CoV-2 main protease as target.

The 2019-novel coronavirus (nCoV) has caused a global health crisis by causing coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic in the human population. The unavailability of specific vaccines and anti-viral drug for nCoV, science demands sincere efforts in the field of drug design and discovery for COVID-19. The novel coronavirus main protease (SARS-CoV-2 Mpro) play a crucial role during the disease propagation, and hence SARS-CoV-2 Mpro represents as a drug target for the drug discovery. Herein, we have applied bioinformatics approach for screening of chemical compounds from Indian spices as poten

The prevalence and correlates of anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in non-target predators and scavengers in Finland.

The most common rodent control method worldwide is anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), which cause death by internal bleeding. ARs can transfer to non-target predators via secondary exposure, i.e. by consuming contaminated rodents. Here we quantify the prevalence of seven AR substances in the liver tissues of altogether 17 mammalian or avian predator or scavenger species in Finland. In addition, we identify the environmental and biological factors potentially linked to secondary AR poisoning. No previous AR screenings have been conducted in the country, despite the widespread use of ARs and thei

Genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis spp. in road-killed wild mammals from the Central Western Region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION:: Road-killed wild animals host zoonotic pathogens such as Toxoplasma gondii, offering a new opportunity for the epidemiological study of these infectious organisms. METHODS: This investigation aimed to determine the presence of T. gondii and other apicomplexan parasites in tissue samples of 64 road-killed wild animals, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Positive samples were then typed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using 7 markers: SAG1, 5'-3'SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, c29-6, PK1, and Apico. PCR-RFLP targeting 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes was also performed

Understanding Past Population Dynamics: Bayesian Coalescent-Based Modeling with Covariates.

Effective population size characterizes the genetic variability in a population and is a parameter of paramount importance in population genetics and evolutionary biology. Kingman's coalescent process enables inference of past population dynamics directly from molecular sequence data, and researchers have developed a number of flexible coalescent-based models for Bayesian nonparametric estimation of the effective population size as a function of time. Major goals of demographic reconstruction include identifying driving factors of effective population size, and understanding the association be

Cessation of Trichinella spiralis transmission among scavenging mammals after the removal of infected pigs from a poorly managed farm: implications for trichinae transmission in the US.

Pigs infected with the zoonotic parasite Trichinella spiralis were detected on a farm in Maryland during an animal welfare investigation. Sera and/or tissues were collected from 49 pigs and three pig carcasses (7 weeks of age to adult, mixed sex). The tissues were tested for the presence of T. spiralis muscle larvae (ML) by tissue digestion, and the sera were tested for the presence of anti-Trichinella antibodies by ELISA. Seventeen of 50 (34%) pigs were infected with T. spiralis based on tissue digestion. Of these 17 pigs, sera were collected from 16; nine were serologically positive, three s

Genetic assignment methods for gaining insight into the management of infectious disease by understanding pathogen, vector, and host movement.

For many pathogens with environmental stages, or those carried by vectors or intermediate hosts, disease transmission is strongly influenced by pathogen, host, and vector movements across complex landscapes, and thus quantitative measures of movement rate and direction can reveal new opportunities for disease management and intervention. Genetic assignment methods are a set of powerful statistical approaches useful for establishing population membership of individuals. Recent theoretical improvements allow these techniques to be used to cost-effectively estimate the magnitude and direction of

Quantifying dilution and amplification in a community of hosts for tick-borne pathogens.

Recent controversy over whether biodiversity reduces disease risk (dilution effect) has focused on the ecology of Lyme disease, a tick-borne zoonosis. A criticism of the dilution effect is that increasing host species richness might amplify disease risk, assuming that total host abundance, and therefore feeding opportunities for ticks, increase with species richness. In contrast, a dilution effect is expected when poor quality hosts for ticks and pathogens (dilution hosts) divert tick blood meals away from competent hosts. Even if host densities are additive, the relationship between host dens

Cryo-EM structure of locked spike glycoprotein from bat SARS-like coronavirus WIV1, molecular dynamics and biophysics across host range.

As made evident by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 1 (SARS-CoV-1) and SARS-CoV-2 pandemics, the possibility of a SARS-like coronavirus (SL-CoV) emerging again in humankind after zoonotic spillover represents a significant global health threat. Given the role of spike (S) glycoprotein in mediating SL-CoV cell entry and cross-species transmission, there remains urgent need of structural information on SL-CoV S to guide therapeutic countermeasure development. Among SL-CoVs, bat-derived WIV1 is capable of using as receptor the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) from a variety of

Fatal multidrug-resistant Bordetella bronchiseptica and CAdV-2 coinfection in an 8-month-old boxer puppy, Southern Italy.

Canine adenovirus type 2 (CAdV-2) is a widespread virus and one of the etiological agents of "kennel cough", a multifactorial disease involving both viral and bacterial pathogens, including Bordetella bronchiseptica (B. bronchiseptica). Clinical manifestation is characterized by tracheobronchitis, which is generally associated with mild, self-limiting respiratory signs. In this study, we describe a respiratory outbreak associated with CAdV-2 and B. bronchiseptica infection in a Boxer breeding kennel in Southern Italy during the winter of 2023/2024. Several dogs showed fever and respiratory sig

Analysis and Clinical Importance of Skull Base Fractures in Adult Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Basal skull fracture (BSF) is rare in head injury (HI) patients and occasionally goes unnoticed which may lead to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula. With changing trends in HI, there is a need to reassess incidence and pattern of BSF pattern, CSF leak, meningitis, and management protocol, especially in this part of the world where detailed literature is lacking. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We closely followed adult patients admitted with BSF in our institute between January 2013 and December 2014. Associated clinical features were recorded. In case of CSF leak, detailed CSF stu
