The use of a synthetic skin substitute as a physical barrier to enhance healing in human periodontal furcation defects: a follow-up report.

The purpose of this investigation is to compare the clinical response of guided tissue regeneration using a synthetic wound dressing with open flap debridement versus open flap debridement alone in the treatment of human furcation defects. The study group was composed of 19 patients with moderate to advanced adult periodontitis and at least one bilateral pair of Class II molar furcation defects. After the hygiene phase of therapy was completed, measurements were made with calibrated periodontal probes of the clinical attachment levels, probing depths, and soft tissue recession. Paired sites we

Guided tissue regeneration following treatment of recession-type defects in the monkey.

Recent studies have demonstrated extensive amounts of new attachment formation following reconstructive surgery based on the biological principle of guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of using a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) membrane in GTR-treatment of recession-type defects and to examine the interrelationship between the PTFE membrane and surrounding periodontal tissues. Full-thickness flaps were raised around 24 maxillary premolar and molar teeth in 6 monkeys. The buccal alveolar bone was surgically removed to a level correspon

Bone formation following implantation of bone biomaterials into extraction sites.

BACKGROUND: Adequate bone volume is imperative for the osseointegration of endosseous implants, but postextraction resorption and remodeling may challenge implant placement. The use of bone biomaterials has been advocated to fill extraction sites and to enhance primary implant stability during osseointegration. The objective of the case series was to evaluate bone formation histologically and biomechanically in extraction sites following implantation of three commercially available bone biomaterials to compare their ability to allow guided bone regeneration. METHODS: Thirty-six periodontally

Clinical aspects of restorative treatment in the primary dentition.

The failure rate of restorative treatment in primary teeth was studied in a cohort of children born in 1981 and related to caries diagnosis, prevalence and distribution on different tooth surfaces, and compared with a cohort of children born in 1971. Concurrently, the longevity of composite resin in modified Class 2 cavities in primary molars was followed up and the resistance of deciduous and permanent enamel to acid adjacent to composite resin and glass polyalkeonate cement (GPA) was tested in vitro. From the 70s to the 80s, diagnostic methods changed and the examination intervals were prolo

Structure of the microbial flora associated with periodontal health and disease in man. A light and electron microscopic study.

Teeth slated for extraction were evaluated with respect to their periodontal status and classified accordingly into five categories; namely normal, gingivitis, periodontitis, periodontosis and postperiodontosis. After processing, one approximal surface of each tooth was sampled at various levels in an apico-occlusal direction for light and electron microscopic study of the associated bacterial flora. In normal samples, the flora consisted of a relatively thin, adherent bacterial layer confined to the enamel surface. The cells were predominantly coccoid in shape with cell wall features compatib

Neutral zone and oral submucous fibrosis.

Oral submucous fibrosis is a premalignant condition in which rigidity of the lip, tongue, and palate results in reduced mouth opening and tongue movement. Limited mouth opening, mucosal rigidity, and reduced salivary flow makes prosthodontic procedures difficult in these patients and affects the stability, retention, and the support of removable prostheses. The burning sensation in the mouth that these patients experience reduces the tolerance to prostheses. We report a case of oral submucous fibrosis where the conventional neutral zone technique with certain modifications was utilized to reha

Gingival recession: part 3. Surgical management using free grafts and guided tissue regeneration.

This paper is the third in a three part series looking at the aetiology and management of gingival recession. Part 1 in this series discussed the aetiology of gingival recession and the non-surgical management. Part 2 discussed in detail the factors affecting the outcome of periodontal surgery and the use of pedicle flaps. This paper aims to discuss the surgical options available to correct localised recession defects using free grafts and guided tissue regeneration.

Assessment of Enamel Remineralisation After Treatment with Four Different Remineralising Agents: A Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Decades of research has helped to increase our knowledge of dental caries and reduce its prevalence. However, according to World Oral Health report, dental caries still remains a major dental disease. Fluoride therapy has been utilised in a big way to halt caries progression, but has been met with limitations. This has paved the way for the development of newer preventive agents that can function as an adjunct to fluoride or independent of it. AIM: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the ability of Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate Fluoride (CPP ACPF

Evaluation of resorbable membrane in treatment of human gingival isolated buccal recession.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession in its localized or generalized form is an undesirable condition which results in root exposure. Several different techniques have been described in order to cover the exposed root surface, and increase the dimensions of the keratinized tissue in gingival recession defects. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the result using a bio resorbable membrane for the treatment of human isolated buccal gingival recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients, i.e. 6 males and 4 females, mean age 34.5 years, with Miller's classification class I or II facial mucogin

Intrachromosomal partial triplication of chromosome 13 secondary to a paternal duplication with mild phenotypic effect.

Intrachromosomal triplications are rare and can be mistaken for duplications. The majority of triplications reported are de novo, mostly involving chromosome 15q, and have a middle inverted repeat. We report on the clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular analyses of a patient with a novel triplication 13q21.1-q21.33 secondary to a familial duplication 13q21.1-q21.33 with mild phenotypic effect in three generations. The propositus was an 8-year-old boy referred because of language delay and mild mental retardation. His weight, height and OFC were above the 97th centile. He had delayed tooth erupti

Impact of a biological barrier in pulpectomies of primary molars.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine whether placement of a resorbable collagen barrier at the apical one third of the root canal could prevent extrusion of pulpectomy filling material. METHODS: Twenty-five extracted primary mandibular second molars, with at least two thirds of root length remaining, were used. The apical third of each root was covered with utility wax, and teeth were embedded in acrylic. Carious tooth structure was removed, crowns were reduced to a flat surface, and canals were accessed and preflared. Working lengths were established by reducing file

[Age-Related Changes in Occlusion and the Clinical Management and Prevention Strategies].

Occlusion refers to the contact relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Its biomechanical properties influence motor function, most often in the orofacial and cervical regions, and the patient's psychological well-being as well. In this review, we summarized age-related changes in occlusion and the corresponding clinical management and preventive strategies from three perspectives-the functional characteristics of normal occlusion and their age-related changes, the effects of abnormal occlusion on health and the potential neurophysiological mechanisms involved, and age-related changes
