BACKGROUND: Despite notable advancements in prosthetic leg technology, commercially available devices with embedded algorithms utilizing bioelectric signals for prosthetic leg control are lacking. This untapped potential could enhance current prosthetic leg capabilities, enabling more natural movements. However, individuals with short residual limbs have limited available muscle and it has not been investigated if different locomotion modes can be predicted in real-time in this population. Here, we explored the feasibility of using electromyographic signals in individuals with short residual l

Photobiomodulation (PBM) occurs when a cell is exposed to low energy intensities. A novel central venous port (CVP) with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emits red light with a wavelength of 680 nm via wireless energy transmission technology has been established. This comparative in vitro study examined whether PBM can reduce the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a common cause of central venous (CV) infections, in vitro. In this comparative in vitro study, the red light with a wavelength of 680 nm was used to irradiate an MRSA suspension in phosphate-buffered sali

INTRODUCTION: Transabdominal electrocardiographic (TAfECG) acquisition of fetal heart rate (FHR) signals has recently been introduced into leading commercial cardiotocographic (CTG) monitors. Continuous wireless transmission of signals has raised the possibility of the technology being used during maternal mobilization in labor. This study aims to evaluate signal quality and accuracy of TAfECG acquisition of FHR signals during static and active maternal positions in labor when compared with Doppler signals and with the gold-standard method of fetal scalp electrode (FSE).

BACKGROUND: Diabetes prevalence is increasing and current methods of management are unsustainable. Effective approaches to supporting self-management are required. The aim of this randomized controlled trial is to establish whether supported telemetric monitoring of glycemic control and blood pressure results in reductions in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c; the primary outcome of a measure of long-term glycemic control) and secondary outcomes of blood pressure and weight among people with poorly controlled diabetes compared to a control group receiving usual care.

INTRODUCTION: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia worldwide affecting an estimated 5% of people over the age of 65 and is a leading cause of stroke and heart failure. Identification of patients at risk allows preventative measures and treatment before these complications occur. Conventional risk prediction models are static, do not have flexibility to incorporate dynamic risk factors and possess only modest predictive value. Artificial intelligence and machine learning-powered health virtual twin technology offer transformative methods for risk prediction and guiding clinica

Hookworm infects over 400 million people globally and causes gastrointestinal morbidity, yet its physiological effects remain poorly defined. Controlled human hookworm infection is also being explored as a therapy for gut diseases. We performed an exploratory study to evaluate the impact of experimental Necator americanus infection on gastrointestinal transit, motility, and luminal pH in 10 healthy adults (mean age 41 yr, 60% females) infected with 30 larvae via skin application. Assessments using the SmartPill Wireless Motility Capsule were performed at baseline, week 6 (acute infection), and

BACKGROUND: Implantable medical devices (IMDs), such as pacemakers, increasingly communicate wirelessly with external devices. To secure this wireless communication channel, a pairing process is needed to bootstrap a secret key between the devices. Previous work has proposed pairing approaches that often adopt a "seamless" design and render the pairing process imperceptible to patients. This lack of user perception can significantly compromise security and pose threats to patients.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the use of highly perceptible vibrations for pairing with IMDs and aim to

Flying ad hoc network (FANET) is a new technology, which creates a self-organized wireless network containing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In FANET, routing protocols deal with important challenges due to limited energy, frequent link failures, high mobility of UAVs, and limited communication range of UAVs. Thus, a suitable path is always essential to transmit data between UAVs. In this paper, a local filtering-based energy-aware routing scheme (LFEAR) is proposed for FANETs. LFEAR improves the template of the route request (RREQ) packet by adding three fields, namely the energy, reliable

PURPOSE: The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the use of a gyroscope sensor to record rotations of the tibia about its long axis during a clinical pivot shift examination.
METHODS: Ten patients with a unilateral ACL injury were tested under anaesthesia prior to surgery. Each ankle was placed in neutral position, wrapped and stabilized with athletic tape, and a small aluminium plate was taped to the bottom of the foot. A data recovery module was attached to the bottom of each plate using a swivel bracket that allowed alignment of the gyro axis with the long axis of the tibia.

BACKGROUND: The upper extremity and particularly the hands are crucial for patients in interacting with their environment, therefore amputations or severe damage with loss of hand function significantly impact their quality of life. In cases where biological reconstruction is not feasible or does not lead to sufficient success, bionic reconstruction plays a key role in patient care. Classical myoelectric prostheses are controlled using two signals derived from surface electrodes in the area of the stump muscles. Prosthesis control, especially in high amputations, is then limited and cumbersome
