There is a shared goal of organising reform efforts in mental health services to eliminate restrictive practices and improve therapeutic relationships. However, evidence on high-quality, culturally safe, co-produced, and strengths-based interventions and evaluations is limited, especially for complex interventions centred on therapeutic responding. In response, a multi-centre, mixed concurrent control study is underway to evaluate the Safe Steps for De-escalation, a multi-component intervention focused on a structured framework for mental health nurses' therapeutic responses to emotional distr

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence persists in health care with nurses reporting physical and verbal abuse from aggressive patients causing emotional stress and lost workdays. The Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression-Inpatient Version (DASA-IV) was developed to measure risk for aggression in patients with behavioral health conditions in psychiatric and emergency department settings. The DASA-IV has not been validated with adult patients admitted to medical-surgical units.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether DASA-IV scores are predictive of aggressive events in adults hospitalized on medical-su

BACKGROUND: Violence and aggression are significant workplace challenges faced by clinicians worldwide. Traditional methods of training consist of "on-the-job learning" and role-play simulations. Although both approaches can result in improved skill levels, they are not without limitation. Interactive simulations using virtual reality (VR) can complement traditional training processes as a cost-effective, engaging, easily accessible, and flexible training tool.
OBJECTIVE: In this exploratory study, we aimed to determine the feasibility of and barriers to verbal engagement with a virtual agent

OBJECTIVES: This study examined risk factors for nursing staff associated with being assaulted in the workplace and described the prevalence of staff assaults on patients.
BACKGROUND: Most studies examining assaults in the workplace examine patient variables. Scant empirical investigation has occurred of staff variables.
METHODS: A random mailed survey measuring physical and psychological assaults, sexual assault, and trauma history was employed. Childhood abuse and education were unique predictors of physical and sexual assault by patients. The results also revealed that staff members somet

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this article, we explore how Long-Term Residential Care (LTRC) features contribute to violence against staff.
METHODS: Data were collected using a mixed-methods case study in LTRC, including an online survey (N = 240) and interviews with staff (N = 29) in two Canadian provinces.
FINDINGS: Survey data showed 97.2% of staff reported experiencing at least one form of violence from residents, and 53.2% experienced one or more forms of violence from family carers. Severe physical violence from residents was significantly correlated with the number of different types o

Frequency and severity of trauma exposure are thought to influence posttraumatic reactions. Weiss et al.'s Critical Incident History Questionnaire (CIHQ; 2010) measures these variables among law enforcement officers; they reported findings using a sample of officers from large urban departments. We noted the need for replication studies utilizing samples from smaller and rural police agencies. The purpose of this study was to replicate the CIHQ findings from Weiss et al. using a sample (N = 193) of officers from small and midsize police departments and officers whose duties include policing ru

This descriptive cross-sectional study determined the prevalence and sources of verbal and physical workplace abuse in the last 6 months, the nurses' reactions to abuse, and their opinions about it. Datawere collected by questionnaire from 447 nurses working in various departments in 3 hospitals in Amman. The prevalence of verbal and physical abuse was 37.1% and 18.3% respectively. Younger, less experienced nurses and those in emergency and intensive care departments experienced more abuse. Patients and their relatives were the usual abusers. Only 35.1% of the abused nurses reported it; of tho

BACKGROUND: The need for home care workers (HCWs) is rapidly growing in Norway due to the increasingly growing elderly population. HCWs are exposed to a number of occupational hazards and physically demanding work tasks. Musculoskeletal disorders, stress, exhaustion, high sick leave rates and a high probability of being granted a disability pension are common challenges. This qualitative study explored the views of HCWs on how working conditions affect their safety, health, and wellbeing.
METHODS: A descriptive and explorative design was utilised using semi-structured individual interviews wi

INTRODUCTION: Home care workers (HCWs) are paid caregivers who provide support to patients with chronic conditions and functional limitations. Additionally, they provide emotional support to patients and familial support. Although several qualitative studies have been conducted on HCWs, they focused more on studying prevalently the lived experiences about the workplace violence, the end of life, stressor and resilience, during the COVID-19 pandemic or focused more in dementia and heart failure, but not on feelings and working conditions.
METHODS: The study was carried out using Cohen's phenom

Background/Objectives: Occupational distress threatens nurses' well-being, workforce sustainability, and quality of care. Although most evidence derives from questionnaires, interviews, and other researcher-defined methods, nurses increasingly use social media to communicate work-related experiences. This review mapped the evidence on occupational distress represented in nurse-generated social media content, its main dimensions and organizational sources, and the role of social media in professional expression and self-representation. Methods: A scoping review was conducted according to Joanna

INTRODUCTION: Moral sensitivity plays a crucial role in clinical decision-making and patient interactions among Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. Although moral sensitivity and professional quality of life have been studied in hospital-based healthcare providers, little evidence exists regarding EMS personnel, who face unique challenges such as heavy workloads, workplace violence, and frequent ethical dilemmas in unpredictable environments. These gaps highlight the necessity of investigating the relationship between moral sensitivity and professional quality of life in this context.

Postgraduate (PG) medical education is vital for a nation's healthcare workforce development. Over the past decade, significant reforms have been introduced under the leadership of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), including expansion of training capacity and efforts to standardize assessment through national-level entrance and exit examinations. Despite these advances, the system continues to face formidable challenges. A persistent mismatch between the number of MBBS graduates and available PG seats has created a highly

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of literature exploring vicarious trauma (VT) in emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. VT is emotional countertransference that occurs between the clinician and patient. The presence of trauma- or stressor-related disorders could be a factor in the rising suicide rate in these clinicians.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional statewide study of American EMS personnel, using one-stage area sampling. Nine EMS agencies were selected to participate based on geographic area, who then provided data about annual call volume and mix. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised

BACKGROUND: Midwifery care plays a vital role in the reduction of preventable maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity. There is a growing concern about the quality of care during facility based childbirth and the occurrence of disrespect and abuse (D&A) worldwide. While several studies have reported a high prevalence of D&A, evidence about the drivers of D&A is scarce. This study aims to explore midwives' professional identity and perspectives on the occurrence of D&A in urban Mozambique.
METHODS: A qualitative study took place in the central hospital of Maputo, Mozambique. Nine focus gr

Introduction Autistic people are particularly at risk of experiencing forms of violence, ostracism or discrimination, which lead to social exclusion in the course of their lives. However, very little research has addressed social exclusion from its subjective dimensions (e.g. attitudes, opinions, social representations and self-perception) and the relational contexts in which these experiences take shape and affect well-being and mental health. This article presents the results of qualitative research conducted with young autistic adults in Quebec who took part in asynchronous online discussio
