Congenital ptosis and blefarophimosis: retrospective analysis of the effectiveness of correction with levator resection and frontalis suspension.

BACKGROUND: treatment of congenital ptoses and blepharophimoses relies on levator resections and frontalis suspensions. Several techniques of levator resection have been described in literature, some of them include tarsal resections and resections of the Müller muscle. Nevertheless a gold treatment have not been detected yet. Frontalis suspension is performed when levator muscle is not functional or when ptosis is severe. The suspension could be carried out with several materials: ePTFE, silicon rods, poly-propylene, nylon, braided poliester, but the preferable material is considered the auto

Neuromuscular plasticity and rehabilitation of the ocular near response.

The near response is composed of cross-coupled interactions between convergence and other distance-related oculomotor responses including accommodation, vertical vergence, and cyclovergence. The cross-coupling interactions are analogous to the body postural reflexes that maintain balance. Near-response couplings guide involuntary motor responses during voluntary shifts of distance and direction of gaze without feedback from defocus or retinal-image disparity. They optimize the disparity stimulus for stereoscopic depth perception and can be modified by optically induced sensory demands placed o

[Management of hyperopia in children].

PURPOSE: To study the prevalence of hyperopia in school-aged children and to analyze the factors that increase the risk of squint or amblyopia in a retrospective study. METHODS: Three hundred eyes of 150 children with hyperopia who did not have anisometropia > or =1.5 D were selected. Complete ophthalmological examination was performed for all children. Hyperopia was defined when spherical equivalent was +0.5 D or greater. Amblyopia was screened and treated by patching therapy and then penalisation. Complete spectacle correction was achieved in children with high hyperopia (+3.5 D or greater)

Visual anomalies in young children exposed to cocaine.

PURPOSE: The number of children exposed to cocaine in utero each year is increasing. Recent reports suggest significant visual anomalies in infants prenatally exposed to cocaine. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine if children exposed prenatally to cocaine were at a greater risk for visual abnormalities, such as strabismus and significant refractive errors. METHODS: This pilot study was conducted at two sites, an outpatient clinic and a hospital-based practice. Consecutive files from January to July, 1993, of 79 children (aged 4 months to 94 months); who were identified b

Spectrum of Binocular Vision Anomalies in Keratoconus Subjects.

UNLABELLED: Keratoconus (KC) is typically a bilateral asymmetric corneal condition associated with anisometropia. A detailed evaluation of binocular vision function is therefore a critical component of ocular examination in these patients for early detection and treatment of binocular vision anomalies. PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to measure the various parameters of binocular vision (BV) in patients with KC and to identify the factors that possibly influence them. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study of BV in patients with KC and with best-corrected visual acuity

BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia: Management with corneal techniques.

Corneal techniques for enhancing near and intermediate vision to correct presbyopia include surgical and contact lens treatment modalities. Broad approaches used independently or in combination include correcting one eye for distant and the other for near or intermediate vision, (termed monovision or mini-monovision depending on the degree of anisometropia) and/or extending the eye's depth of focus [1]. This report reviews the evidence for the treatment profile, safety, and efficacy of the current range of corneal techniques for managing presbyopia. The visual needs and expectations of the patie

The Brückner test: extended distance improves sensitivity for ametropia.

BACKGROUND: The Brückner test is usually performed at a distance of 1 m. Due to optical reasons, the test should detect ametropia more sensitively at an extended distance. We compared the sensitivity of the test to detect unilateral ametropia at a distance of 4 m versus the traditional distance of 1 m. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, five blinded experienced observers (experts) performed the Brückner transillumination test on five emmetropic subjects (age 22.3 +/- 2.3 years) at a distance of 1 m which was then extended up to 4 m. Unilateral ametropia was simulated by both spherical and c

Retrospective analysis of refractive errors in children with vision impairment.

PURPOSE: Emmetropization is the reduction in neonatal refractive errors that occurs after birth. Ocular disease may affect this process. We aimed to determine the relative frequency of ocular conditions causing vision impairment in the pediatric population and characterize the refractive anomalies present. We also compared the causes of vision impairment in children today to those between 1974 and 1981. METHODS: Causes of vision impairment and refractive data of 872 children attending a pediatric low-vision clinic from 1985 to 2002 were retrospectively collated. As a result of associated impa
