Canine Babesioses in Noninvestigated Areas of Serbia.

During the years 2012-2014, a total of 158 outdoor dogs from Pančevo and Đurđevo (northern Serbia) and Niš and Prokuplje (southern Serbia) were submitted to molecular analyses (PCR and sequencing) for canine babesioses. An overall prevalence of 21.5% was found, due to the species Babesia sp. 'spanish dog' (10.1%), B. gibsoni (5.7%), B. canis vogeli (1.9%), B. caballi (1.9%), and B. microti (1.9%). In addition, sequence analysis showed the presence of Hepatozoon canis in a dog from Niš. No significant difference between infected and noninfected dogs was found by age, sex, and place of residence

Tick-induced neurological disorders.

Diseases transmitted by ticks have been increasing in frequency and distribution, partly due to climate change. In the last decades, new tick-borne pathogens have been discovered that cause prominent neurologic disease. In this review, the impacts created by these discoveries insofar as nervous system involvement will be addressed. The effects of climate change ensure that this is a timely topic of medical importance. Tick bite paralysis causes direct neurological injury through a neurotoxin that leads to a dangerous clinical condition. Several pathogens can be transmitted by ticks of the genu

Long-term spatiotemporal stability and dynamic changes in the haemoparasite community of bank voles (Myodes glareolus) in NE Poland.

Long-term field studies on parasite communities are rare but provide a powerful insight into the ecological and evolutionary processes shaping host-parasite interactions. The aim of our study was to identify the principal factors regulating long-term trends in the haemoparasite communities of bank voles, and to this end, we sampled three semi-isolated populations of bank voles (n = 880) in 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2010 in the Mazury lake district region of NE Poland. Overall, 90.8 % of the bank voles harboured at least one of the species of haemoparasites studied. Whilst overall prevalence (all sp

Babesiosis and Its Significance in Transfusion Medicine from a European Point of View.

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis, caused by intraerythrocytic parasites of the genus Babesia, represents an emerging global health threat due to its capacity for persistent infection and transfusion transmission. The ability of Babesia spp. to establish chronic, asymptomatic infections lasting up to 2 years in immunocompetent hosts creates a substantial reservoir of infectious blood donors, making transfusion-transmitted babesiosis (TTB) a critical blood safety concern. SUMMARY: The epidemiology of babesiosis differs markedly between regions, with B. microti predominating in North America and B. diverg

Emerging Tick-Borne Pathogens in Central Canada: Recent Detections of Babesia odocoilei and Rickettsia rickettsii.

Background: The spread of emerging tick-borne pathogens has steadily increased in Canada with the widespread establishment of tick vectors and vertebrate hosts. At present, Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium causing Lyme disease, is the most common tick-borne pathogen in Canada and primarily transmitted by Ixodes scapularis. A low prevalence of other emerging tick-borne pathogens, such as Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia species, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Francisella tularensis have also been detected through surveillance efforts in Canada. Although Rickettsia rickettsii has been historically

Living with chronic infection: Persistent immunomodulation during avirulent haemoparasitic infection in a wild rodent.

Apicomplexans are a protozoan phylum of obligate parasites which may be highly virulent during acute infections, but may also persist as chronic infections which appear to have little fitness cost. Babesia microti is an apicomplexan haemoparasite that, in immunocompromised individuals, can cause severe, potentially fatal disease. However, in its natural host, wild field voles (Microtus agrestis), it exhibits chronic infections that have no detectable impact on survival or female fecundity. How is damage minimized, and what is the impact on the host's immune state and health? We examine the dif

Distribution of Ticks and the Risk of Lyme Disease and Other Tick-Borne Pathogens of Public Health Significance in Ontario, Canada.

Over the past two decades, the northward spread of Ixodes scapularis across Ontario, Canada, has accelerated and the risk of Lyme disease has increased. Active surveillance is a recognized and effective method for detecting reproducing populations of I. scapularis. In this study, we conducted field sampling consistent with an active surveillance approach from May to October 2014 at 104 sites in central, eastern, and southern Ontario to determine the current distribution of I. scapularis and other tick species, and enhance our understanding of the geographic risk associated with Borrelia burgdo

Short report: duration of tick attachment required for transmission of powassan virus by deer ticks.

Infected deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) were allowed to attach to naive mice for variable lengths of time to determine the duration of tick attachment required for Powassan (POW) virus transmission to occur. Viral load in engorged larvae detaching from viremic mice and in resulting nymphs was also monitored. Ninety percent of larval ticks acquired POW virus from mice that had been intraperitoneally inoculated with 10(5) plaque-forming units (PFU). Engorged larvae contained approximately 10 PFU. Transstadial transmission efficiency was 22%, resulting in approximately 20% infection in nymphs tha

The diversity of tick-borne bacteria and parasites in ticks collected from the Strandja Nature Park in south-eastern Bulgaria.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are important carriers of many different zoonotic pathogens. To date, there are many studies about ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBP), but only a few were carried out in Bulgaria. The present study intends to detect the prevalence of tick-borne bacteria and parasites occurring at the Black Sea in Bulgaria to evaluate the zoonotic potential of the tick-borne pathogens transmitted by ticks in this area. METHODS: In total, cDNA from 1541 ticks (Dermacentor spp., Haemaphysalis spp., Hyalomma spp., Ixodes spp. and Rhipicephalus spp.) collected in Bulgaria by flagging method or

Profound Hemolytic Anemia in Babesiosis With Lyme Disease Coinfection and Occult Strongyloidiasis.

Babesiosis is a tick-borne infection caused by intraerythrocytic Babesia parasites and may result in severe hemolytic anemia and systemic complications. Coinfection with other Ixodes-borne pathogens may further complicate diagnosis and management. We report a 45-year-old immunocompetent man working as a landscaper in Connecticut who presented with syncope following two weeks of fever, fatigue, diaphoresis, arthralgias, jaundice, and dark urine. Laboratory evaluation revealed profound hemolytic anemia with a hemoglobin of 6.8 g/dL, elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), undetectable haptoglobin,

Babesiosis diagnosis and treatment.

Human babesiosis due to Babesia microti is an emerging malaria-like infection that is endemic in parts of the northeastern and northcentral United States. The clinical manifestations of babesiosis range from subclinical illness to fulminant disease resulting in death. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is difficult because the signs and symptoms are non-specific. A CBC is a useful screening test since anemia and thrombocytopenia are commonly observed and parasites may be visualized on blood smear. Conclusive diagnosis of this disease generally depends upon microscopic examination of thin blood smea

A suspected case of Lyme disease causing complete heart block.

Carditis is a rare complication of Lyme disease and usually presents in the early dissemination phase, several weeks after exposure to a tick bite. Conduction abnormalities are the most common manifestation of Lyme carditis. The presentation can vary from atrioventricular conduction delay (first-degree atrioventricular conduction block) to life-threatening situations, such as a complete heart block. Although such manifestations occur late, our case report describes an interesting case where the patient developed a complete heart block in the setting of acute Lyme disease. An elevated IgM with

Babesiosis as a rare cause of fever in the immunocompromised patient: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: This is the case of a rare and regional disease not often considered in the immunocompromised patient presenting with a chief complaint of fever. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old immunocompromised Indian woman presented with a chief complaint of fever, in the absence of localizing signs and symptoms, from an area endemic to Babesia microti. CONCLUSIONS: Our patient's case is instructive in that Babesiosis and other arthropod born illnesses should be considered in immunocompromised patients presenting with fever in the absence of localizing signs or symptoms. This is especially

Human babesiosis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of human babesiosis and review the literature on the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe a 62-year-old man with babesiosis, outline his clinical course and response to therapy, and discuss the use of the polymerase chain reaction for the diagnosis and monitoring of the infection. RESULTS: The onset of the disease was insidious, with fatigue, fever, weight loss, intermittently discolored urine, and anemia. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a small, shrunken spleen with an irregular border. With treatment, the symptoms gradually resolved. Although

Molecular characterization and functional analysis of thioredoxin peroxidase-2 from Babesia duncani.

Human babesiosis caused by Babesia duncani is an emerging zoonotic disease that poses a growing threat to public health. Since the first reported case in 1991, knowledge of this pathogen has remained limited. Recent completion of the B. duncani genome sequence has accelerated research aimed at elucidating its molecular biology. During its intraerythrocytic life cycle, B. duncani is exposed to oxidative stress generated by redox reactions. In this study, we identified and characterized an antioxidant enzyme from B. duncani-thioredoxin peroxidase-2 (BdTPx-2), a member of the peroxiredoxin family

Isolation of a human erythrocyte-adapted substrain of Babesia rodhaini and analysis of the merozoite surface protein gene sequences.

Babesia rodhaini is a rodent hemoparasite closely related to B. microti, the major causative agent of human babesiosis. We tested the infectivity of B. rodhaini for human erythrocytes by using the SCID mouse model in which the circulating erythrocytes were replaced with those of humans. Initially, parasites grew very poorly in the mouse model, but a variant capable of propagating in human erythrocytes emerged after an adaptation period of three weeks. In an attempt to identify parasite proteins involved in the alteration of host cell preference, an expression cDNA library of B. rodhaini was co

Survival and infectivity of Babesia in blood maintained at 25 C and 2-4 C.

Babesia microti-infected blood was stored at room temperature (approximately 25 C) or refrigerated (4 C) for 30 days. To assess viability of the parasites after storage at these 2 temperatures, a 0.25-ml aliquot was inoculated into each of 2 hamsters in 2 separate experiments at days 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 25, and 30. Blood films were prepared and examined weekly for the presence of parasites from all hamsters. Of hamsters inoculated with blood held at room temperature, only those inoculated at day 3 became positive, whereas 4/4 hamsters inoculated with refrigerated blood on day 17 became paras

Successful prevention and treatment of babesiosis with atovaquone.

Atovaquone was evaluated for the prevention and treatment of babesiosis in hamsters. When atovaquone was administered before inoculation of 10(6) Babesia microti and continued for 8 days thereafter, 9 of 10 hamsters survived beyond 54 days, but all untreated controls died within 12 days after inoculation. Quantitation of parasitemia showed a mean of 75% erythrocytes parasitized by day 5 in controls, but atovaquone recipients never exceeded 0.7% of parasitized erythrocytes over 54 days of observation. Clindamycin plus quinine was also effective but less so than atovaquone. When treatment was no
