BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and their corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are of global public health concern. Documented information on the epidemiology and spread of ARB and ARGs among fish farms in Katsina State, Nigeria is scarce. This study isolated and characterized selected ARB and ARGs from Gram-negative bacteria in fish from aquaculture farms within Katsina State, Nigeria.
METHODOLOGY: Hundred apparently healthy C. gariepinus fish samples were randomly collected from five (A, B, C, D, E) aquaculture farms. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from sam

Blood redistribution occurs in mammals under hypoxia but has not been reported in fish. This study investigated the tissue damage, hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) activation level, and blood flow changes in the brain, liver, and muscle of Pelteobagrus vachelli during the hypoxia process for normoxia-hypoxia-asphyxia. The results showed that P. vachelli has tissue specificity in response to hypoxic stress. Cerebral blood flow increased with less damage than in the liver and muscle, suggesting that P. vachelli may also have a blood redistribution mechanism in response to hypoxia. It is worth noti

The short term toxicity in Clarias albopunctatus (Lamonte and Nicole, 1927) exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of Roundup was studied. A total of 36 fish were divided into 3 groups in a static bioassay model. Fish in 2 test groups were exposed to 5 and 15 ppm, respectively, of Roundup while fish in the control group were not exposed to the toxicant. Six fish per group were bled exhaustively (each) at 48 h and at 96 h while the livers and gills were harvested at 96 h for histological studies. The results showed that serum concentrations of total and conjugated bilirubin increased significantl

The activity of Ethoxyresorufin-o-dealkylase (EROD) in the liver of Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus was evaluated as a response to experimental and natural contamination of water with Benzo-a-pyrene and/or cadmium. The activity was measured fluorimetrically in the hepatic S9 fraction while the content of the enzyme was measured by ELISA. The response appeared as early as six hours post exposure. This study also reveled that Oreochromis niloticus exhibits higher values of EROD activity than that of Clarias gariepinus. CYP450 1A1 content showed lower responsiveness when compared to

The linear relationship between tail-beat frequency and swimming speed in fish, first described by Bainbridge in 1958, has since been confirmed in species as disparate as eels and tuna. Dimensional scaling has explained why linearity should emerge at high Reynolds numbers, but the frequency-speed relationship itself has remained empirical, with no physical framework describing its behavior across swimming regimes, and no account of what sets the two quantities that define it: the distance covered per tail beat and the frequency below which forward motion supposedly ceases. Here, we derive a re

Taurine is considered a conditionally essential nutrient in several teleost fish; however, its metabolic role remains poorly understood in native South American species. In the present study, taurine metabolism was investigated in four aquaculture-relevant freshwater species: Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (spotted catfish), Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu), Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui), and Arapaima gigas (pirarucu). Individuals were sampled from natural environments during spring and autumn, as well as from commercial aquaculture systems. The condition factor (K), gonadosomatic index (GSI), an

Owing to its low cost and high effectiveness as a biocide in aquaculture, malachite green (MG) and its residue leucomalachite green (LMG) are commonly found in aquatic resources. However, they are known to be hazardous contaminants to both the ecosystem and humans. Their side effects on the environment threaten fishery resources and food safety. In this perspective, designing a suitable tool for the quantitative and real-time detection of MG and LMG in foodstuffs is extremely crucial. Herein, we report an ultrasensitive differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method using a gold (Au) electrode mo

While most higher taxa in the Hemiuroidea exhibit remarkable diversity and thrive worldwide in marine ecosystems, a few groups have successfully radiated into freshwater environments. Among them, species of Thometrema are well known from freshwater and brackish fishes in the New World. In this study, specimens of Thometrema from a single specimen of the endangered pimelodid catfish Steindachneridion scriptum in the Upper Paraná River basin, State of São Paulo, Brazil, were subjected to morphological, ultrastructural (first scanning electron microscopy data for the genus) and molecular analyses

The freshwater fish fauna of southern Africa is highly diverse; however, the magnitude of parasitic species they host is unevenly known. The region's documented adult trematode fish fauna is sparse, while the opposite is evident for intermediate trematode stages. Perceived difficulty in identification of underdeveloped stages lead to the exclusion of reporting metacercariae or lack either morphological or molecular data resulting in a depauperate comparative molecular data repository for species of the region and Africa as a whole. In an effort to address the morphological and molecular data v

The study investigates the causative agent responsible for massive mortality in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus cage farms. The infected pangasius were lethargic, not taking feed, and had exophthalmia, deep ulceration, and hemorrhage on the ventral body surface. Pathogens were isolated from infected pangasius tissue samples, and the strain was preliminarily identified as Proteus vulgaris based on morphology, biochemical tests, 16S rRNA PCR sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. The microbiological analysis revealed that P. vulgaris was associated with the disease outbreak and mortality of P. hypop

In Bangladesh, the extensive use of fenitrothion on crops and in aquaculture ponds inevitably threatens a range of aquaculture species, including fish, owing to stress responses and physiological disturbances. The present study elucidated the potential toxic effects of fenitrothion on the blood biomarkers (haemato-biochemistry and structure of erythrocytes) of stinging catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis), a commercially significant aquaculture species. Fish were exposed to four sub-lethal concentrations (0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% of the 96-h LC50 value) of fenitrothion in triplicate and observed on

Suction feeding in ray-finned fishes involves powerful buccal cavity expansion to accelerate water and food into the mouth. Previous XROMM studies in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) have shown that more than 90% of suction power in high performance strikes comes from the axial musculature. Thus, the shape of the axial muscles and skeleton may affect suction feeding mechanics. Royal knifefish (Chitala blanci) have an unusual postcranial morphology, with a ventrally flexed vertebral column and relatively la

Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes) ZUH1 was isolated and characterized using morphological, cultural and biochemical methods. The results showed that the marker genes (namely spyCEP, ssa, sic, sdaB and speG) indicating group A streptococci (GAS) were detected in the S. pyogenes genome. The results showed that the S. pyogenes strain was inhibited by Crocus sativus methanol extract (CSME), bee honey (BH) and catfish glycoprotein (CFG). The inhibitory activity of these natural agents were compared with standard antibiotics such as Ceftazidime (30 μg/mL), Cefoperazone (75 μg/mL), Cefoxitin (30 μ

EseN is a type III secretion system (T3SS) effector that is encoded on the Edwardsiella ictaluri chromosome and is homologous to a family of T3SS effector proteins with phosphothreonine lyase (PTL) activity, including OspF from Shigella and SpvC from Salmonella. A yeast-2-hybrid system was used to identify the major vault protein (MVP) as a specific host-cell binding partner for EseN, and the proximity ligation assay (PLA) confirmed the interaction. Similar to other pathogens, E. ictaluri invasion activates extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) early in the infection, which a

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are among the most widely detected pharmaceuticals in surface water worldwide. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac is used to treat many types of pain and inflammation. Diclofenac's potential to cause adverse effects in exposed wildlife is a growing concern. To evaluate the effects of waterborne diclofenac on the immune response in Rhamdia quelen (South American catfish), fish were exposed to 3 concentrations of diclofenac (0.2, 2.0, and 20.0 μg/L) for 14 d. Some of the exposed fish were also given an intraperitoneal injection on day 14 of 1

A high-throughput enhanced pressurized liquid extraction technique was developed by incorporating pressurized liquid extraction and multiple cleanup techniques. USEPA methods of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (dl-PCBs) analysis in fish tissue include independent silica gel, florisil, alumina, and carbopack/celite column cleanup techniques following extraction. Under the improved method, fish composites (~10 g) were extracted and cleaned simultaneously using alumina (~10 g), florisil (~10 g), silica gel (~5 g), celite (~5 g), a

Pentachlorophenol (PCP), an organochlorine fungicide, is extensively used in the United States for the protection of wood products. Moreover, widespread agricultural, domestic, and industrial applications have caused PCP-contaminants to enter the food chain from the environment. There is accumulating evidence indicating that PCP is highly toxic to humans, and causes injury to major organs including the lung, liver, kidneys, heart, and brain. While PCP has been shown to induce systemic toxicity and carcinogenesis in several experimental studies, the literature is scarce regarding its toxic mech

Amino acids are important taste stimuli for a variety of animals. One animal model, the channel catfish, I. punctatus, possesses sensitive taste receptor systems for several amino acids. Neurophysiological and biochemical receptor binding studies suggest the presence of at least three receptor pathways: one is a relatively nonspecific site(s) responsive to short-chain neutral amino acids such as L-alanine (L-ALA); another is responsive to the basic amino acid L-arginine (L-ARG); still another is a low affinity site for L-proline (L-PRO). Several possible transduction pathways are available in

Fish bone impaction in the oropharynx is a common cause of foreign body sensation and odynophagia. While computed tomography (CT) has the highest sensitivity and specificity among radiologic imaging modalities in the detection of fish bone foreign bodies, false negatives still occur. This case demonstrates the critical importance of clinical judgement and further evaluation when foreign body symptoms persist despite negative imaging findings. A 67-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) twice within 24 hours with persistent odynophagia and foreign body sensation after eating
