OBJECTIVE: Histological analysis has limited value to predict the biological behavior of meningiomas. In this study, we investigated the utility of indicators of cell proliferation in the evaluation of histologically benign meningiomas.

A cutaneous melanocytic tumor with morphologic overlap with clear cell sarcoma, but defined by CRTC1-TRIM11 gene fusion, was recently described in a series of five adult patients. Here, we expand the clinicopathologic features of this entity by four additional cases which include pediatric presentation, exophytic growth, and propensity to occur on the head. The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cytokeratin 16 (ck16) and Ag nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) were assessed in 20 cases of lichen planus, 20 cases of keratosis and 20 cases of normal oral mucosa in order to evaluate the rate of keratinocyte proliferation in these tissues. Four cases of malignant lymphomas in elderly patients are reported, along with the results of immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed that three cases consisted of diffuse neoplastic proliferation of medium-sized lymphocytes (diffuse) lymphoma, medium-sized cell type), while the remaining one showed follicular neoplastic proliferation of medium-sized lymphocytes (follicular lymphoma, medium-sized cell type). Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that most of the tumor cells in three cases had weak to moderate immunoreactivity for L26 and weak reactivity for IgM.

To examine whether giant cell lesions of the jaws (GCL) of varying behavior could be separated histologically, a number of GCL were studied using the AgNOR staining technique for nucleolar organizer regions.
