Epidemiological investigation of feline chronic gingivostomatitis and its relationship with oral microbiota in Xi'an, China.

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is an ulcerative and/or proliferative disease that typically affects the palatoglossal folds. Because of its unknown pathogenesis and long disease course, it is difficult to treat and has a high recurrence rate. Most of the bacteria in the oral microbiota exist in the mouth symbiotically and maintain a dynamic balance, and when the balance is disrupted, they may cause disease. Disturbance of the oral microbiota may play an important role in the development of FCGS. In this study, the medical records of 3109 cats in three general pet hospitals in Xi 'an w

Status of the oral environment in patients with digestive system tumors during the perioperative period.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is an important treatment modality for patients with digestive system tumors, and perioperative management is crucial for the patients' recovery and quality of life. During the perioperative period, significant changes can occur in the oral environment of patients, such as dry mouth, mucosal ulceration, and oral infections. These issues not only cause discomfort to the patients but may also affect postoperative recovery and treatment outcomes. Therefore, it is essential to investigate and analyze the oral environment during the perioperative period in patients with digestiv

Management of a Complex Case of Gingival Enlargement Associated With Underlying Arteriovenous Malformation: A Five-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are high-flow congenital vascular anomalies characterized by abnormal direct communication between arteries and veins, bypassing the capillary bed. Gingival enlargement or gingival overgrowth is a common gingival disease characterized by an increase in the size of the gingival tissues. The main factors of gingival enlargement are inflammation, drugs, systemic conditions or diseases, neoplastic or false enlargements, and local factors, such as plaque, calculus, and/or overhanging restorations. The purpose of this article is to present an interesting case of th

Gingival Fibroma: An Emerging Distinct Gingival Lesion with Well-Defined Histopathology.

Gingival growths, barring a few are mostly reactive and seldom exhibit significant true neoplastic potential. The common etiology is local irritation from dental plaque/calculus, trauma as well as medication-related overgrowth. Such lesions are easily distinguishable and categorized into diagnoses such as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, etc. We present a previously undescribed, but commonly encountered, reactive gingival growth with unique histologic features and suggest the diagnostic term "gingival fibroma." An IRB approved retrospective review of the University of Florida

Psoriasis and Periodontitis: Exploring an association or lack thereof.

OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis is a common, chronic, non-communicable skin disease with no clear etiology or cure. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition which is now known to significantly influence various systemic diseases as an established risk factor. This study aimed at comparatively evaluating the periodontal status of Psoriatic patients vis. a vis. that of age and gender matched systemically healthy volunteers. An attempt was also made to explore a possible association, if any, amongst the two diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty two residents of Chandigarh, suffering from Psorias

Clinical response to 2 different therapeutic regimens to treat peri-implant mucositis.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance of implants is imperative, since implants, like teeth, are susceptible to bacterial plaque accumulation and calculus formation, and thus at risk of developing peri-implant mucositis or peri-implantitis. METHODS: This study determined the clinical effects of chlorhexidine treatment on peri-implant mucositis at 1 and 3 months as determined by the modified plaque index, the modified sulcus bleeding index, clinical attachment level, and probing depth. Through DNA probes, the effect of chlorhexidine on the microbial flora of mucositic lesions was also evaluated. The populat

Adjunctive use of a subgingival controlled-release chlorhexidine chip reduces probing depth and improves attachment level compared with scaling and root planing alone.

The present studies evaluated the efficacy of a controlled-release biodegradable chlorhexidine (CHX) (2.5 mg) chip when used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on reducing probing depth (PD) and improving clinical attachment level (CAL) in adult periodontitis. Two double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled multi-center clinical trials (5 centers each) were conducted; pooled data are reported from all 10 centers (447 patients). At baseline, following 1 hour of scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients free of supragingival calculus, the chip was placed in target sites with PD 5 to 8 m

[The 1562 De dentibus by Girolamo Cardano].

"In the year 1562, having noticed that none of the ancient or modern physicians had treated the subject of dental care, I wrote this first book on the teeth". So begins the preface to the five books of the Opuscula medica senilia by Girolamo Cardano, the first organic text on dentistry in history. It competed with the famous Libellus de dentibus by Bartolomeo Eustachio that appeared in 1563 (but was written in 1562). However, our intention is not to establish precedence but bring to reader's attention Cardano's work that complemented Eustachio's anatomy and physiology of the teeth with their p

Periodontal diseases in the United States population.

Recent epidemiologic surveys and studies have provided important information on the prevalence, extent, and severity of periodontal diseases in the United States. Over 50% of adults had gingivitis on an average of 3 to 4 teeth. Subgingival calculus was present in 67% of the population. Adult periodontitis, measured by the presence of periodontal pockets > or = 4 mm, was found in about 30% of the population on an average of 3 to 4 teeth. Severe pockets > or = 6 mm were found in less than 5% of the population. Attachment loss > or = 3 mm was found in 40% of the population. Gingival recession acc
