Odontogenic Sinusitis: The Selective Role of a Modified Caldwell-Luc Approach in Two CT/CBCT-Documented Cases.

Tooth-bearing structures are commonly involved in the spread of various odontogenic lesions. Radicular and dentigerous cysts are among the most common odontogenic cysts, exhibiting significant variations in size and morphology within the jawbones. On the other hand, the influence of dental caries, periodontal diseases, and periapical lesions extends beyond tooth-bearing bone and also affects adjacent anatomical structures, especially the maxillary sinuses. In addition to untreated odontogenic lesions, treatment-related complications in the posterior maxilla may also disturb the sinus environme

Utility of Chitra-HASi Granules in Cystic Defects of the Maxillofacial Region: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Cystic defects that are critical sized or larger require bone replacement strategies. However, due to inherent disadvantages of the various types of grafts, none of the available materials are best suited for these defects. Among the alloplastic materials, hydroxyapatite (HA)-based grafts are the most popular, due to their osteoconductive nature and resemblance to mineral bone. The aim of the study was to assess the utility of the novel material "Chitra-HASi" as a bone substitute in the maxillofacial region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a single-arm, prospective study, patients with

The oral manifestations of Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis VI): a case report.

Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome is one of the genetic disorders involving disturbances in mucopolysaccharide metabolism resulting in increased storage of acid mucopolysaccharide in various tissues. The basic defect in Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome is a deficiency of arylsulfatase B, which leads to accumulation of dermatan sulfate in tissues and their urinary excretion. The deposition of mucopolysaccharides leads to a progressive disorder involving multiple organs that often results in death in the second decade of life. This disease, which has several oral and dental manifestations, is first diagnosed on th

Multiple osseous dysplasia arising from impacted teeth: report of a case associated with odontogenic lesions.

We report a case of osseous dysplasia (OD) showing extremely rare clinical features. A 37-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our clinic complaining of a left alveolar bony swelling at an impacted canine. Radiographic examinations revealed a mixed radiopaque lesion involving the impacted left canine and also revealed an impacted left wisdom tooth with a cystic change and a clear radiopaque lesion suspected to be odontoma. All the extracted upper teeth and odontoma showed hypercementosis and the canine was fully involved in it. Histopathologically, they showed the same features and were dia

Pathological sequelae of "neglected" impacted third molars.

An NIH conference on "Removal of Third Molars" debated the need for removal of asymptomatic impacted teeth with no evidence of pathology but stressed the need for long-range studies. The assumption is that "neglected" impacted third molars (ITMs) will sometime cause serious pathology. Examination of panoramic radiographs of 11,598 patients revealed 1,756 patients with 3,702 impacted teeth; average age 47 years, and an average retention period approximately 27 years. Dentigerous cystic changes occurred in about 30 ITMs (0.81%), internal resorption in 16 (0.43%), periodontal ligament damage and

Dental Germ Tumor: An Unusual, Cystic, Mixed Epithelial-Mesenchymal Odontogenic Tumor.

Although odontogenic lesions have been extensively described and studied, anomalous, challenging cases occasionally come to the attention of the pathologist. Here, we report the clinical and microscopic characteristics of an unusual cystic lesion of odontogenic origin. A 16-year-old male presented with swelling and pain to palpation of the right mandible as well as numbness of the right lower lip. Radiographically, the corresponding lesion was well-defined and radiolucent with internal radiopaque foci. It extended from the right first premolar posteriorly, approaching the angle of the mandible

Endoscopic removal of a molariform supernumerary intranasal tooth (heterotopic polyodontia) in a horse.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old Thoroughbred mare was evaluated because of abnormal upper respiratory tract sounds (that had become apparent during race training) of 3 to 4 months' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: On initial physical evaluation, there were no abnormal findings. During trotting, an abnormal upper airway expiratory sound was audible. Endoscopic examination revealed a small mass protruding into the right ventral nasal meatus. Radiographic images of the skull revealed no abnormal findings. Computed tomography of the head revealed an abnormal structure in the same location as the mass

The Histology and Histopathology of the Dental Innervation: (Section of Odontology).

The presence of a perivascular neural plexus in the periodontal membrane suggests that the dental structures have both sensory and autonomic nerve supply. The fibres described by Mummery are unaffected by section of the inferior dental nerve although there is marked degeneration in all demonstrable nerves. Nerve-fibres have been observed describing simple and complex looping in the odontogenetic zone and others which, running tangentially between the odontoblast layer and the dentine, form a very definite nerve plexus. Attached to these nerve-fibres are numerous round or pear-shaped bodies whi

Adverse effects of splinting of luxated primary teeth: A systematic review.

Traumatic dental injuries of primary teeth are considered as dental emergencies and public health problems because of the higher global prevalence. Dental literature in regard to optimal treatment options for periodontal injuries of primary teeth (luxation injuries) is quite limited and perplexing in terms of treatment outcomes/prognosis due to several relevant factors. To date, there has been no systematic review published in context of exploring and analyzing the unfavorable outcomes/adverse effects of splinting the luxated primary teeth and its effect on permanent successors teeth. Hence, t

Dermatoglyphic Patterns in Patients Having Impacted and Erupted Third Molars-A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: The dermatoglyphics have been used in several researches for predicting various pathologies of oral cavity like periodontitis, dental caries, impacted teeth, mal-occlusion, developmental defects such as cleft lip and palate, and potentially malignant disorders. Impacted teeth may be associated with various pathologies such as caries, pericoronitis, dentigerous cysts, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors; therefore, predicting impacted teeth through dermatoglyphic patterns can help in diagnosis and future treatment planning of such event. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim and objective o

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI), first described almost a century back, is of neural crest origin, locally aggressive, a rare biphasic neoplasm of infancy with a slightly higher male preponderance. In the last 100 years since the first description of MNTI, only around 500 cases have been described from 32 countries. We present a 7-month-old female child with 3 × 2 cm hard swelling in the oral cavity and right-side facial region for 3 months. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a hypodense lesion of size 2.5

Podoplanin immunoexpression in odontogenic lesions: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and integrated bioinformatic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Podoplanin (PDPN) is a transmembrane glycoprotein implicated in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions (OL). It is localized at the membrane and cytoplasmic level, and its interaction with other proteins could trigger cell proliferation, invasion and migration. The main objective of this systematic review is to explore the immunoexpression pattern of podoplanin in OL. In addition, as secondary objectives, we aimed to compare the immunostaining intensity of PDPN in OL, to analyze its interaction networks by bioinformatic analysis and to highlight its importance as a potential diagn

[Partsch's chronic granulomatous inflammation, the cutaneous manifestation of a dental cause].

Dentogenous inflammatory diseases can lead to typical dermatological facial symptoms with formation of cutaneous sinuses. Partsch's chronic granulomatous inflammation can result from conducted inflammation of a nonvital tooth via a chronic apical inflammation. In this rare disease, the granulomatous tissue perforates the bone, channels through the overlying skin, and drains via cutaneous or oral sinuses. A frequent localization of the cutaneous sinus is the skin inferior to the body of the mandible, and it is caused by an inflammation of the lower molars. Treatment consists of identifying the
