Emotion Recognition and Traumatic Brain Injury: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments in emotion recognition that can present considerable challenges to social communication and the maintenance of interpersonal relationships. This review aimed to estimate the magnitude of emotion recognition impairments in TBI patients overall, and at the emotion category level, and to determine if the magnitude of observed impairments were moderated by modality (e.g., face, voice, multi-modal) of emotional expression, and severity of injury. Searches of PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Medline databases identified 17 studies which satisfied str

Online child sexual exploitation and abuse: A community diagnosis using the social norms theory.

This study focused on the drivers of online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA) among Filipino children and youth, with emphasis on community norms. An ethnographic qualitative study was conducted in two communities in MetroManila that are considered "hotspots" for child sexual abuse. One hundred and forty-four (144) males and females from various age groups served as key informants. Political officials, Internet shop managers, professionals and police officers were also interviewed. Non-participant observations and mapping were used to provide context regarding OCSEA in the communitie

First Postpubertal Same-Sex Sex in Kinsey's General and Prison Male Same-Sex Samples: Comparative Analysis and Testing Common Assumptions in Minor-Adult Contacts.

Kinsey's prison male same-sex sample (consisting of prisoners who were gay, bisexual, or had had extensive postpubertal same-sex sex regardless of sexual attractions) was compared with Kinsey's general (i.e., non-prison) same-sex sample (previously analyzed by Rind and Welter, 2016) in terms of reactions to and characteristics of first postpubertal same-sex sex, with a focus on minor-adult contacts. Prison participants had a minor-adult contact as their first postpubertal same-sex sex twice as often as general participants, and their experience involved penetration in three-quarters of cases c

Influence of Repaired Cleft Lip and Palate on Layperson Perception following Orthognathic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Facial scarring and disharmony caused by clefting are associated with psychosocial stress, which may be improved by orthognathic surgery. The authors examine how clefting influences change in layperson perception of a patient following orthognathic surgery. METHODS: One thousand laypersons were recruited through Mechanical Turk to evaluate patient photographs before and after orthognathic surgery. Nineteen patients-five with unilateral and five with bilateral clefting-were included. Respondents assessed six personality traits, six emotional expressions, and likelihood of seven int

[Gender Dysphoria in Children in Clinical Practice of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry].

In Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), Gender dysphoria (GD) is defined as a marked incongruence between one's experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender. Clinical pictures of GD in children show marked diversity. Because of their limited ability to express themselves verbally, children with GD might not be able to describe their discomfort or distress about this incongruence. In contrast to GD in adulthood, GD in children could be alleviated in the natural course. Thus, the clinical diagnosis of GD in children should be made carefully. Distortio

Mapping the development of facial expression recognition.

Reading the non-verbal cues from faces to infer the emotional states of others is central to our daily social interactions from very early in life. Despite the relatively well-documented ontogeny of facial expression recognition in infancy, our understanding of the development of this critical social skill throughout childhood into adulthood remains limited. To this end, using a psychophysical approach we implemented the QUEST threshold-seeking algorithm to parametrically manipulate the quantity of signals available in faces normalized for contrast and luminance displaying the six emotional ex

The amygdala of patients with Parkinson's disease is silent in response to fearful facial expressions.

We previously found that patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) were impaired with respect to recognition of fear and disgust in facial expressions. To investigate the neural mechanisms that underlie this impairment, we recorded visual event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to the viewing of fearful facial expressions. Ten normal elderly volunteers and nine patients with PD were studied. Fearful, surprised, and neutral facial expressions were presented randomly for 500 ms each, with a probability of 0.1, 0.1, and 0.8, respectively. The locations of the components of the ERPs were analyzed

Dopaminergic state modulates shame and contextual emotional responses in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundShame is frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD) and negatively affects quality of life, yet its dopaminergic modulation remains unclear.MethodsWe investigated the effect of dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) on shame in 41 fluctuating PD patients using an experimental tailored shame induction task. At visit 1, participants were presented with 60 short written scenarios (neutral, non-PD-related shame, PD-related shame). A tailored selection of 12 scenarios (4 per category) was generated in three steps: (1) initial rating of all 60 scenarios on a shame/embarrassment visual analogue s

Predicting Sexual Aversion, Low Sexual Desire, and Asexuality Using the Dual Control Model.

Sexual aversion is defined as extreme aversion to partnered genital sexual contact. Sexual aversion may share features with asexuality (e.g., avoidance of sexual behaviors and sexual disgust), but the former provokes distress whereas the latter does not. It may also share symptoms with low sexual desire (avoidance of sexual behaviors and distress), but the link between sexual aversion and reduced sexual desire has not been established. The extent to which sexual aversion overlaps with asexuality and low sexual desire has not been studied. Based on the dual control model, we hypothesized that s

Emotion recognition from auditory autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) using multi-modal physiological signals.

Objective.Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a tingling sensation induced while attending to specific sounds, including whispering, tapping, scratching, or other soft, repetitive noises. While previous studies focused on low arousal-positive emotions such as relaxation and calmness, this study explores a broader range of emotions elicited by ASMR auditory stimuli, including happiness, sadness, and disgust.Approach.The proposed study collects the multi-modal physiological data from electroencephalography, photoplethysmography, and electrodermal activity via wearable bio-sensors from

"I Felt Dirty in a Way a Shower Wouldn't Fix": A Qualitative Examination of Sexual Trauma-Related Mental Contamination.

Trauma-related mental contamination (MC) is a distressing sense of dirtiness that arises absent a contaminant following a traumatic event. Existing work has linked MC to more severe posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among individuals with sexual trauma histories and has begun to characterize some aspects of the experience of trauma-related MC. However, a more nuanced understanding of how individuals experience and respond to trauma-related MC is lacking. The present study explored lived experiences of trauma-related MC among a sample of 34 women with sexual trauma histories using semi-str

Virtual Money and Emotional Reality: A Qualitative Analysis of Symbolic Issues in a Stock Market Simulation.

This article analyzes how novice investors emotionally experience a stock market simulation conducted with virtual money. Financial simulations are sometimes criticized because they do not reproduce the real financial consequences of investment decisions. However, the fifteen semi-structured interviews conducted after the simulation show that the absence of monetary loss does not eliminate the emotional intensity of the experience. Participants report stress, fear, frustration, disgust, disappointment, satisfaction, and pride. This article argues that virtual money shifts emotional responses t

A Qualitative Exploration of the Decision Not to Take Part in Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Women Living in Lower Socio-Economic Areas.

BACKGROUND: Organized colorectal (CRC) screening programmes offer an opportunity to reduce the burden of the disease on populations. CRC screening participation among women is substantially lower than breast or cervical cancer screening. Uptake is also lower in areas of greater deprivation which could exacerbate inequalities in CRC; however, few studies have been conducted with women resident in lower socio-economic areas who were invited for screening but did not participate. The aim of this study was to explore women's decisions not to take part in Ireland's population-based BowelScreen prog

The uncanny valley effect and immune activation in virtual reality.

The uncanny valley effect describes a phenomenon where humanoid, almost lifelike virtual agents evoke feelings of discomfort in the observers. The Pathogen Avoidance Hypothesis proposes that these feelings are based on a cognitive mechanism that originally evolved to motivate pathogen avoidance. Slight imperfections in virtual agents are thereby misconceived as cues of communicable diseases that elicit disgust and avoidance behavior. Whether uncanny entities also increase mucosal immune responses, particularly when immediate avoidance is impossible, currently remains elusive. The present study

Effects of relational and instrumental messaging on human perception of rattlesnakes.

We tested the effects of relational and instrumental message strategies on US residents' perception of rattlesnakes-animals that tend to generate feelings of fear, disgust, or hatred but are nevertheless key members of healthy ecosystems. We deployed an online survey to social media users (n = 1,182) to describe perceptions of rattlesnakes and assess the change after viewing a randomly selected relational or instrumental video message. An 8-item, pre-and post-Rattlesnake Perception Test (RPT) evaluated perception variables along emotional, knowledge, and behavioral gradients on a 5-point Liker

Social cognition deficits in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A pilot cross-sectional population-based study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Social cognition (SC) deficits are included in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-frontotemporal spectrum disorder revised diagnostic criteria. However, SC performance among ALS patients is heterogeneous due to the phenotypic variability of the disease and the wide range of neuropsychological tools employed. The aim of the present study was to assess facial emotion recognition and theory of mind in ALS patients compared to controls and to evaluate correlations with the other cognitive domains and degree of motor impairment. METHODS: Eighty-three patients and 42 contro

The recognition of facial expressions of emotion in deaf and hearing individuals.

During real-life interactions, facial expressions of emotion are perceived dynamically with multimodal sensory information. In the absence of auditory sensory channel inputs, it is unclear how facial expressions are recognised and internally represented by deaf individuals. Few studies have investigated facial expression recognition in deaf signers using dynamic stimuli, and none have included all six basic facial expressions of emotion (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise) with stimuli fully controlled for their low-level visual properties, leaving the question of whether o

The combined effect of subthalamic nuclei deep brain stimulation and L-dopa increases emotion recognition in Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (DBS) is a widely used surgical technique to suppress motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), and as such improves patients' quality of life. However, DBS may produce emotional disorders such as a reduced ability to recognize emotional facial expressions (EFE). Previous studies have not considered the fact that DBS and l-dopa medication can have differential, common, or complementary consequences on EFE processing. A thorough way of investigating the effect of DBS and l-dopa medication in greater detail is to compare patients' performances
