Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Stimulation (LIFU) is a noninvasive and nondestructive neuromodulatory method with growing evidence for the safe and effective treatment of chronic pain. However, the effect of LIFU applied to the spine region, including the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia, is not well understood. In this work, we review current advances in LIFU of the spine region for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain and movement disorders to explore potential clinical applications and indicate a direction for future study. To assess the current state of LIFU application to pain m

BACKGROUND: Calcific tendinitis is a common source of shoulder pain and represents pathologic deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite within rotator cuff tendon tissue, most commonly the supraspinatus tendon.
INDICATIONS: Arthroscopic decompression of calcific tendinitis with possible rotator cuff repair is indicated in patients with persistent, debilitating symptoms of pain and/or dysfunction who are recalcitrant to nonoperative treatments, including corticosteroid administration, ultrasound-guided needle barbotage, and/or extracorporeal shockwave therapy.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: With the patie

The ultimate cure for the tendon pathology continues to elude current science. Despite great steps in technology, the causation and treatment is still not clear. The number of different theories and treatment modalities in the literature may confuse clinicians and patients. In this paper we outline the definitions, evolution of pathogenesis and treatment for tendinopathy. By highlighting these, the aim of this paper is to guide the practitioner in counselling and treating their patients.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that high-energy focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (HF-ESWT) has a certain therapeutic effect on glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). This study aimed to observe the efficacy and safety of HF-ESWT as a precautionary measure to reduce the probability of glucocorticoid-induced ONFH.
METHODS: A prospective randomized controlled trial was designed to evaluate whether HF-ESWT (Group A) can significantly prevent the incidence of glucocorticoid-induced ONFH relative to a control group without shockwave intervention (Group B). MRI was

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is effective in the treatment of calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff, eliciting an analgesic/anti-inflammatory action and promoting tissue regeneration. Kinesio taping (KT), another recently-introduced rehabilitative tool, exerts an analgesic and biomechanical action on joints and muscles. ESWT and KT may have a synergic effect when used in combination, but the effectiveness of the association has not been established.
AIM: The aim of this study was to test if the association of KT with ESWT is superior to ESWT alone in the treatment

ESGE suggests endoscopic therapy and/or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) as the first-line therapy for painful uncomplicated chronic pancreatitis (CP) with an obstructed main pancreatic duct (MPD) in the head/body of the pancreas. The clinical response should be evaluated at 6 - 8 weeks; if it appears unsatisfactory, the patient's case should be discussed again in a multidisciplinary team and surgical options should be considered.Weak recommendation, low quality evidence.ESGE suggests, for the selection of patients for initial or continued endoscopic therapy and/or ESWL, taking into

Background Spinal cord ischemia (SCI) remains a devastating complication after aortic dissection or repair. A primary hypoxic damage is followed by a secondary damage resulting in further cellular loss via apoptosis. Affected patients have a poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. Shock wave therapy (SWT) improves functional outcome, neuronal degeneration and survival in murine spinal cord injury. In this first-in-human study we treated 5 patients with spinal cord ischemia with SWT aiming to prove safety and feasibility. Methods and Results Human neurons were subjected to ischemic inju
