BACKGROUND: About 50 million people travel each year from industrialized countries to destinations in the tropics and subtropics. Among them, there are more than 2 million minors traveling. Although their number is increasing constantly, data on health risks during travel are limited.
METHODS: This study analyzed demographic, travel, and clinical data of 890 travelers of age <20 years presenting at the outpatient travel clinic of the University of Munich between 1999 and 2009 after returning from the tropics and subtropics.
RESULTS: Most (87%) of these young travelers were born in Germany. A

This review deals with waterborne zoonotic helminths, many of which are opportunistic parasites spreading directly from animals to man or man to animals through water that is either ingested or that contains forms capable of skin penetration. Disease severity ranges from being rapidly fatal to low-grade chronic infections that may be asymptomatic for many years. The most significant zoonotic waterborne helminthic diseases are either snail-mediated, copepod-mediated or transmitted by faecal-contaminated water. Snail-mediated helminthiases described here are caused by digenetic trematodes that u

Human toxocariasis caused by Toxocara canis is common in both developing and developed countries and leads to visceral larva migrans with high morbidity and mortality. Ascariasis caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, too has global distribution and in India, high prevalence rate has been reported in Kashmir (J & K State). Both nematode parasites, Toxocara canis and A. lumbricoides require similar biological and environmental conditions for the development of eggs in soil. Therefore, the present study was attempted to detect the antibody response to T. Canis excretory-secretory (ES) antigen by enzyme

Toxocara (the cause of visceral larva migrans in humans) and allergy have in common both elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and eosinophilia. In the present study, we investigated: 1) associations between Toxocara seropositivity and allergic manifestations; 2) risk factors for Toxocara infection; and 3) differences in Toxocara seroprevalence, allergic manifestations and the associations between these two, in children from urban and rural environments. Blood samples from 1,379 Dutch urban and rural elementary schoolchildren, were examined for Toxocara antibodies, eosinophil numbers, total I

Toxocarosis clinical forms wers diagnosed according to Kraus et. al. (1995). There were three forms: 1) asymptomatic - marked by hypereosynophilia and ELISA positive serologic reaction, 2) minor - with cutaneous, pulmomary and pseudorheumatic lesions, 3) major - with hepatosplenomegaly and multifocal inflammatory lesions of organ of sight. Over the years of 1994-1997 in Infectious, Parasitic and Tropical Diseases clinic of the Voivodship Specialist Hospital of Lódź we found and treated 137 Toxocara canis cases. Among them 63 (46:0%) asymptomatic, 57 (42.6%) minor and 17 (12.4%) major forms wer

We report a case of bilateral eosinophilic pneumonia in a 33 year old man. This case developed rapidly into acute respiratory failure and required artificial ventilation. Intravenous corticosteroid therapy produced a rapid improvement in the clinical picture. There was hyper-eosinophilia in both the blood and the alveoli which leads to a search for a parasitic aetiology. The different parasitic serologies were negative except for Toxocaracanis. The ELISA index was strongly positive at 2,597. Treatment with thiabendazole was started.

Readily available information as to the management of arthropod bites, stings, and infestations is important to have but often difficult to find. This article brings such information together in one reference for use by the practicing pediatrician, dermatologist, and family practitioner. Preventive measures are stressed and therapy is outlined for each entity; the rationale for many of the interventions is discussed. It is not the intent of this paper to cover each subject comprehensively.

Human infection with the larvae of the dog roundworm, Toxocara canis, occurs in Australia, especially in children, and though usually not serious, it can cause considerable damage if the larvae get into such organs as the eye.

The raccoon (Procyon lotor), an invasive alien species in Europe, is a known reservoir for zoonotic parasites, particularly Baylisascaris procyonis, which can cause severe larva migrans syndromes in humans and animals. Following the first report of B. procyonis in the raccoon population of the Province of Arezzo, Central Italy, in 2021, we developed and implemented a One Health integrated surveillance and management approach combining carcass collection, parasitological and molecular diagnostics, GIS-based risk mapping, environmental fecal monitoring, and targeted public health outreach. Pelodera (A. Schneider, 1866) is a Clade V nematode genus of the Rhabditidae family and close relative of Caenorhabditis elegans. The genus comprises 26 species poised between free-living, commensal, and parasitic lifestyles, as well as species with underappreciated roles in soil nutrient cycling. Pelodera strongyloides, the type species, is a cause of follicular larva migrans among humans and other mammals but can be confused with hookworm folliculitis. With minimal genetic resources available, the capacity to identify and diagnose infectious species and strains of Pelodera are limited. Thus,

The raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis), a gastrointestinal nematode of the raccoon (Procyon lotor), may cause a severe form of larva migrans in humans, which can lead to death or permanent neurological damage. Although roundworms were inadvertently introduced to Europe alongside their raccoon hosts, the parasite is not present in every raccoon population. It is important to understand the geographic distribution of B. procyonis, as early and rapid treatment can prevent severe pathologies in humans. We present evidence for the roundworm spreading into a naive raccoon population through

In urban populations of South America, dogs with free access to public areas represent a public health concern. The primary consequence of roaming dogs on human health is the transmission of infectious and parasitic diseases mainly through feces contamination. The main diseases likely to be transmitted are hydatidosis or echinococcosis, larva migrans, and giardiasis. In Argentina, hydatidosis ranks among the most prevalent zoonosis. Although it is considered a rural disease, the circulation of this parasite in urban areas has been documented. The aim of this work was to survey intestinal paras

Baylisascaris procyonis is a helminth parasite commonly found in North American raccoons (Procyon lotor) that is a cause of clinical neural, ocular, and visceral larva migrans in humans when infective eggs are ingested. Rapid detection of B. procyonis eggs in contaminated soil and water would assist public health analysts in evaluating risks associated with public exposure to areas of known raccoon activity. In this study, a molecular beacon probe-based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to enable rapid and specific detection of eggs of Baylisascaris spp. The molecul

The antigenic similarities of adult-worm extracts of Gnathostoma spinigerum, G. hispidum and G. doloresi, all of which are important food-borne parasites causing larva migrans in humans, were evaluated. The 40 sera used came from gnathostomiasis cases in Mexico, where G. binucleatum is endemic, or in Japan, where G. doloresi predominates. When used as the fixed antigens in microplate-ELISA, the adult-worm extracts from the three different species of Gnathostoma were found to have equal binding capacity to the Gnathostoma-specific IgG antibodies in the sera of the Mexican and Japanese patients.

Specific diagnoses of infectious skin diseases can be established in dermatopathology by several methods: by algorithms based on pattern analysis, by differential diagnosis of clinicopathologically similar disorders, by attention to pitfalls, by exceptions to the rules and finally, very elegantly by clues. Ten clues to specific diagnoses of infectious skin diseases which are of importance in routine practice are presented. Clue 1: Features of an angiocentric angiodestructive lymphoma in the centre of a wedge-shaped necrotic insect bite reaction are a clue to a bite by a spider. Clue 2: Paraker

MALARIA: This review summarises current knowledge of the epidemiological situation regarding parasitoses in French Guiana. Malaria is the most prevalent infection. The most common species is Plasmodium falciparum which is responsible for three quarters of all bouts of malaria. Plasmodium vivax is mostly present in endemic areas inhabited by Amerindian communities. Plasmodium malariae is rarer. CHAGAS' DISEASE, LEISHMAMIASIS AND TOXOPLASMOSIS: Four acute cases of cardiac Chagas' disease were observed between 1994 and 1996. These cases serve as a warning concerning the possible emergence of this
